When I first visited Barchester The Fernes, the care home immediately felt right for my mother. The communal rooms are clean, light and airy but still emit a cosy feeling as do the residents' rooms.
The two staff members who showed me around the home were friendly but also efficient and knowledgeable
of how the facility runs.
Subsequently, I have found all staff, whether management, caring or other ancillary staff, to be pleasant, helpful and well-trained.
Most importantly, my mother seems to be happy with her room, her carers and all the amenities on offer. She particularly enjoys the varied menus.
Reply from Diana Tatpati, General Manager at Barchester The FernesHello Susan, thank you for your kind feedback, we really appreciate it. I will make sure this is shared with my team. This really encourages us all to continue to do the best for our residents which they truly deserve.

October has been a very busy month for my mum, she has had 2 nasty falls and the follow-up by the staff has been fantastic. The care received was above what I expected. I would give The Fernes 10/10.

It was a huge step for us to move our mother into a home. So we were [pleasantly relieved with the smooth transition, and a year later, we couldn't be happier. Mum loves it. I describe it as being like a posh hotel with nurses. Her room is like a little bungalow. Such a pleasant place to visit, with
familiar faces. I feel the nurses have really got to know Mum and all her foibles. Yes, it is expensive, but we know we made the right decision.
Reply from Cassie Munnoch, General Manager at Barchester The FernesThank you for taking the time to complete this lovely review; it's so nice to hear that you are happy with the care Mum receives.
We love that residents make their rooms their own so they feel relaxed in their environment.

In my view and experience, The Fernes is not like a care home, to me it's like a 5-star hotel. My parents are very happy and settled at The Fernes. All staff are very attentive and aware of the needs of all the residents. My father has noticed in his time at The Fernes how much the menu options have
improved.
Reply from Cassie Munnoch, General Manager at Barchester The FernesThank you for your kind words. It's always good to hear that residents and families are having a great experience in our home. We work hard to provide this for all residents and families.

My beautiful wife was admitted during July 2022. The staff were welcoming, friendly, good humoured and caring. The room was well proportioned and the overall condition of the home is excellent. During these past 3 months I have experienced professionalism, support and care for my good lady. The managerial
staff, along with every level of support staff are all pleasant and helpful at all times. The care my lady is receiving is exactly as I would wish it. The food is well-balanced, varied and tasteful. During this month my lady celebrated her birthday and the home provided space, a generous quantity of food and decorated the venue. All in all, apart from the medical circumstances of her admission, I could not ask for more.
Reply from Cassie Munnoch, General Manager at Barchester The FernesThank you for a lovely review. I'm so glad we have been able to support you as well as your loved one.

My mum moved into Barchester The Fernes in April 2022. If I am completely honest it was probably one of my most saddest days thinking I have lost my mum into the care system but how wrong could I have been. It is the most wonderful, homely, caring place she could be. In fact, I would go as far as to
say that she is thriving in there and therefore so am I. The environment is just so relaxing and inviting and it feels like home. I can honestly say that the staff are so amazing. They literally bend over backwards to help mum even at difficult times. They also support my dad as he has found this transition for both mum and himself very difficult. The staff are warm and friendly and lend a well needed listening ear when needed without judgement. The entertainment team are superb. I absolutely love visiting when the entertainment is on. In fact, my dad is now part of the entertainment schedule playing his guitar and singing with the residents. This is truly perfect to see and listen to. Thank you.

My mother recently arrived for respite care at The Fernes after several falls. the staff were lovely, kind and helpful at all times.
I do feel more could have been done to encourage mum's rehabilitation as her default was to lie down and sleep which did not improve her recovery. She needed some one-to-one
encouragement to embrace the care offered rather than being left to decide for herself. The respite was ended at 3 weeks as the room was no longer available.

My husband has mixed dementia and Crohn's disease. All the staff at The Fernes have now enabled two-times one week of respite care for him. They greet him like an old friend and are careful to give him his medication, support and all the care he needs. I feel totally relaxed at being able to leave him
in their clean, kindly, happy environment. Thank you, Fernes.

My mother-in-law moved to The Fernes. The initial move, we were apprehensive but soon realised we had nothing to worry about. This home is first class. My wife has suffered from Parkinson’s disease For the last 20-years. We have managed her care at home for all of that time, but unfortunately, it eventually became impossible for me to manage her care at home on my own, and we had to make the dreaded decision of going into care.
If we had known five
years ago how well cared she would have been at The Fernes, I’m sure we would have happily made the decision much earlier.
Neither of us regrets the decision; she has a lovely room, fantastic staff, five-star meals, and her health has improved dramatically during the two months that she has been here
I cannot speak highly enough of all of the staff, the management and the entertainment manager, all of whom have demonstrated an amazing duty of care.
We consider ourselves to be most fortunate to be part of the “Ferne's community”, and we would like to say a big thank you to all of those who have made this major transition a happy and positive experience.

Current Review Score: 9.7 (9.707)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.7 (9.707) out of 10 for Barchester The Fernes is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.7 out of 5 from 20 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 20 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.707 for Barchester The Fernes is calculated as follows: ( (174 Excellents x 5) + (61 Goods x 4) + (3 Satisfactorys x 3) + (1 Poors x 2) ) ÷ 239 Ratings = 4.707
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Barchester The Fernes is based on 20 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 52 registered maximum number of service users is 10.4, which has been reached with 20 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Hello, my name is Alina, and I am the General Manager at The Fernes Care Home. My team and I look forward to welcoming you into our home.

I have a background in HR, IT, and finance, but I decided to pursue a career in healthcare when I moved to the UK in 2015. My first experience with the residents I supported had a profound impact on me, and it changed my perspective on life. It made me realise the difference that good care and compassion can make in a person's life.

In my previous roles, I spent most of my time in an office, surrounded only by my computer, paperwork, and occasional phone calls. But in my current role, I take home with me the smiles, hugs, and happiness of the residents I care for. It is the greatest reward.

Since starting my career in healthcare, I have continued to develop my skills and knowledge. I have achieved Level 2 and Level 3 in Adult Care, a distinction in Dementia Care, and a Level 5 Diploma in Leadership of Health and Social Care Adults with distinction. I am an adaptable person with good business acumen and a positive attitude.

As a passionate healthcare professional, I am committed to leading my team in delivering outstanding care to our residents. I practice an open-door policy for residents, relatives, and staff, as they are at the heart of what we do at The Fernes.

Hi my name is Justyna and I am Community Care Lead here at The Fernes. As a Care Community Lead I am responsible for overseeing the clinical and care delivery within the home. I take pride in maintaining high standards of quality, compliance, and person-centered care, while nurturing a positive and inclusive culture among my team.
