When visiting my aunt at Kingsclear my aunty who had dementia became distressed when she couldn't find her glasses. She had misplaced them previously but was always checking they were in her trusted bag. As she became more anxious I asked a member of staff if we could borrow a pair from their lost property to prevent the situation from escalating. I was surprised when I was told this is not something that is done at Kingsclear. As a result, my aunt became upset and distressed in a situation I feel could have been avoided. There was no offer of advice or to check she was ok. It didn't help that when I arrived and asked if I could sit with my aunt in the dining room where she was sitting, the staff in the dining room told me she was not in there. I pointed out she was sitting at a table in front of them.

Heartbreaking experience with nurses and assigned GP saying they aren’t able to feed my mum as they aren’t familiar to her!
Begs the question what’s the point of dementia care homes? No distraction techniques used.
Hospital nurses were able to feed Mum daily. Her hygiene was also shocking with toenails filthy and overgrown, no calls to make us aware.

Would recommend never sending any loved one here.

Unfortunately, after such a short time, I am unable to give a fair assessment of all the categories so I have rated them as satisfactory, I can only give my experience.
Three days in Mum became incontinent (due to diarrhoea, virus? Food?), had a fall, broke her hip, bad smell, not clean (floor, door handles, light switch, handrail), apparently, food tastes funny, and room dark, dingy, depressing and dirty. Ensuite door bashes into shower rail, paper coming off the wall, no bath (Mum likes baths), tv controls sticky, that smell everywhere. The same morning she fell, two other residents fell all awaiting ambulances, three-hour wait on the floor (not the home's fault, and can't be moved in that situation) but no pain relief was given, no drink only at my request.

Mum has a horror of going back there, she says anyway the place is too big and impersonal and doesn't suit her, though she acknowledges it's a nice looking place, and says carers and other residents are very nice.

We’re sorry that your mother had this experience as this is not in line with the kind of positive feedback we usually receive. The well-being of the people in our care is our highest priority and we have passed your comments on to the team so that improvements can be made.

Kingsclear have been very welcoming and genuinely caring towards Mum since she arrived in September 2021 for respite care following an operation, she then decided to remain as a permanent resident. Regular reviews ensure we are kept fully informed of her care plan, with the opportunity to contribute towards it. We are very confident in the clinical lead, who continually assesses and understands Mum's needs and ensures they are met by the team of nurses and carers. Staff, all of whom are positive and friendly, generally respond quickly and effectively to any questions or concerns we have. Mum enjoys the food, her room, the entertainment and the company of other residents. We are delighted she chose to live here.

My husband stayed here for two weeks respite care whilst I was away. The care was amazing and totally made his stay. Everything was amazing from the food to his room to the care. He loved the food and I think put weight on during his stay. Care was great and the management were amazing so helpful. If I ever need support in the future it will definitely be this care home.

Review from Peter M (Brother of Resident) published on 31 January 2023 Submitted via Website

My brother came to stay at Kingsclear a month ago. The staff are so attentive to his needs and the care is top-notch, nothing too much. The activities team go above and beyond and on the 21st January they held another fantastic event celebrating Chinese new year, my brother loves joining in activities or just sitting in the bistro chatting with relatives or residents. If you have a concern of any sort you know the managers are there to assist. His room is well-equipped with access to the gardens.

I had two weeks respite care in Kingsclear in late November. The first week I naturally felt tired and stressed after caring for my husband who has early-stage dementia. By the end of week one I felt both my physical and mental health had improved no end and I was enjoying my freedom of responsibility and joining in the activities offered at Kingsclear. As a retired district nurse sister, I was observing how the staff dealt tactfully and cheerfully with everything that happened. My bedsit and shower room were excellent and cleaned every day. I was able to have my hair cut and blow-dried in the beauty salon. I was most impressed!

Mum moved to Kinsclear after a bad fall where she broke her hip and had 30 stitches to her head. The staff are wonderful with Mum and realise that she likes to have company.

Mum is extremely well cared for personally by the care and nursing staff. Mum is always clean and tidy we are struggling with dental care and hoping the home can resolve. We as a family are very happy with Mum's care.

My husband recently went into Kingsclear care home for a short stay so I could go away with my sister, as I am my husband's sole carer. It was a nice break for him and for me. My husband said it was really good and would come back as he made some friends with the residents as well as the carers. He loved the food and The Queen's jubilee party they had.

Overall review is good but two areas could make it excellent, namely;
1) Mum eats little and needs encouragement. Not sure if staples like shepherds Pie etc are offered.

2) Facilities are good but no encouragement/collect to go as Mum forgets to go on her own. Waste of facilities.

I moved my mum to Kingsclear. Myself and family were very dubious about putting Mum into care. She recently suffered a fall and was not herself after losing our dad. My dear friend lives with you. I’m so overwhelmed after my last visit to see her. She is so happy!
Activities that encourage her to be involved, mean that she is more confident. This is fantastic and she now loves to be part of everything! (Previously unheard of.)

She loves the food, another great achievement, and the staff love her as much as she loves them. I have never witnessed people who care as much, they even care about me! What a wonderful home. Thank you.

Robert Cook
Robert CookJob Title Home Manager

I’ve worked in care since I was 18 when I started as a domiciliary carer and stayed in this form of care for over 8 years where I progressed through various roles including supervisor and management roles. Within this time, I also passed my Level 5 in Health and Social Care Management.

In 2020, I joined Kingsclear as the Dementia Unit Manager, before being promoted to Deputy Manager and am now proud to be Home Manager. All roles have given me the opportunity to offer stability to the people living in our community and my colleagues.

I enjoy my daily walk-arounds and getting the opportunity to see and chat with our residents, seeing them smile and make new friends. The local area is lovely and it is important to us that our home is part of the local community. We always look forward to going out and welcoming the community into our home.
