Cramond Residence is located in the tranquil village of Cramond.

Opened in 2018, this established care home can accommodate up to 74 older people in luxurious and comfortable surroundings.

It offers the finest standards of care for older people including nursing, respite, dementia care and post operative rehabilitation. Health professionals work with residents, families and carers to thoroughly assess individual needs and prepare a bespoke care plan to promote physical and mental wellbeing and independence.

This may include physiotherapy, specialist dementia care, wound management, activities or a nutritional and balanced eating plan.

The home is comprised of nine separate houses each of which with eight or nine en-suite bedrooms, shared lounges, dining rooms and activity rooms. The home also has a fine dining room where families can hold celebrations such as an anniversary, birthday or simply just a family get together.

The houses are designed and themed after well-known areas in Edinburgh.

There is also a hair and beauty salon, cinema, library, physiotherapy area and a delightful reception area with coffee and snacks available.

The home has a wide range of activities on offer to support people to have the happiest, active and fulfilling lives. High quality, seasonal food is freshly prepared by two chefs to be nutritionally balanced and to cater for all tastes and dietary requirements.

The pre-admission support was excellent. An urgent admission was required as my relative was in hospital and unable to go home. Admission was excellent. Staff were very supportive of my relative and me.
Cramond undertook all organising and naming of clothing with great care and attention to detail.
Any concerns were addressed immediately and feedback was provided in detail by email. Communication is very good, by phone, email or by the App and a second App. The daily progress reports are what I find most helpful. The staff take a great pride in what they do and are always professional and very pleasant. I feel I can trust them to take good care of my relative. They provide ongoing support to my relative and me. Visitors are welcomed and reassured. The activities are fun, enjoyable, stimulating and well planned. The overall atmosphere is very good.

Dad has been in Cramond for around 12 weeks now, having made the huge decision that he could no longer live independently. What's more he moved a few hundred miles in the process, so the importance of how he was welcomed into the Residence can't be over-estimated. All of the staff, without exception,
have been incredible, initially helping with the transition and then ensuring that all of his needs are met and that he is entertained everyday. With a bit of encouragement he has joined more classes and activities than he had done in years! He loves the fresh air, so makes the most of the wonderful garden and its walkway and he makes regular use of the Club Room for big TV events - he likes his sport. Cramond certainly has all the facilities, but above all it's his interaction with the excellent staff, who are so attentive and caring, that sets it apart.

My Mother came to Cramond at the end of May. I was worried with her dementia that she would be confused and want to go home, even though she doesn't really understand any more what 'home' means. However she seems to have settled in extremely well. The staff have been amazing and the facilities are
second to none. All the worry of Mum's care has been taken from our shoulders and the feeling that she is being well cared for has been a huge sense of relief for us.

My 96 year old mother moved to Cramond Residence in May 2025 from Leeds. It was a huge life event for her and required careful planning. The manager understood our situation and was helpful and flexible in making plans. A room was reserved for her in advance and communications were good.
Since her
arrival, my mother has been treated with kindness, care and respect at all times. The staff have gone out of their way to make her feel at home, encouraging her to join in with activities when she feels able. She has commented on what a happy place Cramond Residence feels, from her point of view, and she enjoys chatting with other residents at mealtimes. The food is excellent and she has gained weight in the first few weeks . The nursing staff are proactive in contacting GPs about any medical needs and she has received excellent medical care (without my involvement). Her room is spacious and clean and the grounds provide an outdoor space for short walks. Highly recommended.

I spent two weeks at Cramond Residence for rehabilitation after hip replacement surgery. My stay there enabled me to recover quickly. I was picked up from the hospital after my surgery, and was taken home after my stay at Cramond. The care from all staff was exceptional and it was reassuring to have
nursing staff and physios there as well as care staff. I was really well looked after with professionalism friendliness and kindness. I have been very moved by my stay, and thank everyone. I could not have recovered so quickly without you all. The food was also great (compliments to the chefs and catering staff), as was my rainforest shower with a seat in my accessible bathroom. Cramond Residence is divided up into several corridors with their own lounges - the spaces are intimate and familiar with lovely decor. There is also a great cafe for residents and visitors. I would definitely consider returning to Cramond Residence when I get my other hip replaced in a year or so!

In early February my wife (90) and I (91) had a fortnight's respite care break in Cramond Residences to rest and recharge our batteries. They have us this and we were very pleased by how well they looked after us.
The caring and nursing staff were extremely attentive and took a real interest in us,
even though we were only short-term residents. The rooms were quite large and well-furnished, with very good beds. There was a comfortable lounge nearby, where we had our meals. There were other lounges too, and a very pleasant garden.
However, not all was perfect -
-The shower controls were stiff and difficult to move.
-Switches for bedside lamps could only be comfortably reached by getting out of bed.
- My wife has arthritic hands and found the button on the call bracelet very difficult to operate.
-Little things spoiled some of the breakfasts - everything was brought at the same time which meant that by the time you had eaten cereal, hot courses and drinks had gone cold.
These criticisms do not outweigh the overall very good standards of Cramond Residences. We benefitted greatly from our stay and are very grateful to all with whom we had dealings.

I came in after a fall - to recuperate. I am sole carer for my husband, so he came with me. We have been treated excellently, kindly and gently. This is a superb care home. I had my 92nd birthday here and they put on a cake and celebration for my family and myself.

Cramond Residence was first class. My 85 year old husband spent three weeks in Cramond following a broken hip and hip replacement. He had excellent care and lots of physio. Five star care, in a five star residence, my mum often thought she was staying in a hotel!
All the staff went above and beyond to make my mum feel special, and she forged many close bonds, which felt like a family. Everyone, including all the background staff, would stop by for a chat.
The care home
has many different areas for people to use with homely lounges to meet up with family or other residents. These are maintained to a very high standard with quality furnishing, and make welcoming spaces for friends and family to meet.
The ground floor has a cafe area with endless supplies of hot drinks and irresistible home baked cakes!
When my mum passed last December, the compassion and sensitivity of care helped through an extremely difficult time.
The attention to care, for both the resident and family is faultless and I highly recommend to anyone considering Cramond Residencefor short or long term stays, my mum having resided there for just over two years.

Cramond Residence is a beautiful place with first class facilities, but it is the people who make it special. It is far and away the best care home I have been in (and I have been in many, in a professional capacity, over the years). I feel that not only is my dad properly seen as a person, but my family
and I are too. Every member of staff I have met has been helpful, friendly, and responsive, often going above and beyond. It was my dad's 94th birthday last week and one particularly wonderful member of staff took all the candles OFF his cake so that my 3 year old granddaughter could put them back on and help carry in the cake! It felt like family in that moment. From the management team to the care assistants, housekeeping and catering staff, and receptionists, and everyone behind the scenes - brilliant.

This was the perfect place to recover from knee replacement surgery. The residence is very comfortable and the staff extremely kind and welcoming. The choice of food is very good. Facilities and staff to help with rehab are excellent.
I would not hesitate to recommend this option for rehabilitation.

I support the General Manager with the running of Cramond Residence and I work at his side to lead and manage the care team.


I’m responsible for providing high-quality and safe care and for monitoring its delivery. I also supervise and support the care team, maintain a safe environment for residents, staff and visitors, and ensure that the Residence complies with the National Care Standards, NMC code of conduct and the requirements of the Care Inspectorate.


I participate in the recruitment and selection of staff and I actively promote the Residence’s objectives – with a view to driving forward the continuous improvement and development of the service we offer, in cooperation with the Management Team.


On a daily basis, I work closely with our charge nurses to manage the various unit teams. My priority is that all residents get the highest possible quality of care.


Can you tell us a little about yourself and your background?


I’m originally from Italy, where I qualified as a nurse in 1997 (I have a Master's Degree in nursing education and management). I also studied Human Resources at university and obtained a second degree in this discipline.


In my career in my home country, I worked in a number of different hospitals and on a range of specialist wards, so I have experience of many types of clinical care.


I came to Scotland with my husband just a few years ago, as we both felt that we wanted to experience a new country and a new culture. We also wanted to improve our English. Since we’ve been here, we’ve been blessed with the arrival of a daughter – a wonderful gift. We love living in Edinburgh, we even love the weather here – the summer in Italy is just too hot!


I started working in the care sector in Scotland as a Unit Manager in 2012 and I have been a Deputy Manager since 2020, just before the pandemic hit. This meant that my last few years working in care have been at a very challenging time, but this has also meant that I have learnt a lot. I began work here at Cramond Residence as Deputy Manager early in 2022.


What do you most like about working at Cramond Residence


I like to make a real difference to people’s lives, especially to elderly people. That’s why I like the fact that Cramond Residence is really focused on providing a high quality of life. Because of this, the Residents are treated as individuals with respect, compassion, honesty and dignity.


In addition, having studied both nursing and human resources at university, I am very pleased that I can combine these two passions and interests in my current job.


At Cramond Residence, we use Personalised Care Plans, as we value people and actively involve them in the planning of their care. This means that every care plan is unique and specific for each person.


To deliver these plans, every single member of the staff works together to achieve the goal of high-quality care and I’m very excited to be part of this great team. We have staff who come from many different backgrounds and who have a wide range of skills – I love to support them in their work, promote their growth and help them succeed.


I also like the tailored training supplied at Cramond Residence, which is definitely one of the key reasons why we are able to achieve excellence in the care we provide.


What motivates you?


I really believe that enhancing people’s quality of life is the most important aspect of the job we do here at Cramond Residence, and that it is how we can make a vital difference in residents’ lives.


What makes people happy can be highly subjective, this is why it is extremely important to actively listen to residents. That’s why we provide an integrated care approach and work as a multidisciplinary team, involving residents, next of kin, GPs, care assistants, nurses, physiotherapists, hospital at home teams, dietitians, etc. This is what really motivates me.


When I worked in hospitals the majority of the people only remained in the wards for a short period of time. At Cramond Residence, I can get to know the residents I look after and help them to live a dignified life. It is wonderful to be able to share their memories, experiences, wishes and expectations.


What else do you like about Cramond Residence?


I really appreciate the fact that Cramond offers residents such a beautiful environment in which they can relax and go about their days.


When it comes to quality of life, I also think that activities are very important. We are therefore working hard to continually improve and enhance the range of events, activities, hobbies and outings that we offer.


Food is another vital part of this jigsaw. For me food should not just be about nutrition (although this is very important) it should also be delicious and enjoyable and mealtimes should be something that people look forward to. At Cramond, we offer delicious food in high quality surroundings. We have lovely cups, plates, cutlery and napkins – it’s little things like this that help people feel more appreciated and more respected.


Are there any aspect of the job that are challenging?


Everything at Cramond Residence works very smoothly because we have some excellent management tools in place, including electronic systems that manage the delivery of medication and the implementation of care plans. However, because these were new systems to me, there was a steep learning curve when I started to use them. Luckily, I had excellent training and everyone was by my side to help me work things out.

I deliver care to our residents, but also make sure that my team of nurses and carers have the right knowledge, skills and experience, so that, together, we do what’s best for the residents and their families. My job therefore involves a fair bit training and, crucially, making sure that staff put their training into practice. If you were to give me a specific label, you would probably describe me as an end of life care specialist. It’s a job I love – I’ve been giving care for over 42 years as a nurse.


Nursing care is quite complex, particularly when you’re supporting residents living with dementia, because you have to think about each individual’s emotional wellbeing, their physical wellbeing, and the fact that the disease process means that one day can be very different to the next. So you have to be able to go with the flow. If it’s a good day for the resident, you should make the most of it, if not, you have to draw on your expertise to help make sure they’re as comfortable as possible.
