July 2021, my mum went into Cramond Residence Care Home for respite as she has vascular dementia. The staff are very professional and caring; they made her very welcome. Cramond Residence is like a five-star hotel, every need is catered for. After a few weeks, my family decided it was the correct place for my mum to be. My mum has settled in well, she keeps the staff on their toes with her antics, she also enjoys participating in some of the daily activities. My dad has also spent some time in respite at Cramond Residence Care Home. I am sure Cramond would be our first choice for my dad. I highly recommend Cramond Residence Care Home.

Overall Experience

In June 2021, Dad and I found ourselves thrust into the unknown and scary world of trying to find a suitable care or nursing home for him, and were quite overwhelmed. Dad is 96 years old, has dementia, and we had just lost Mum. I made enquiries into several homes, but was immediately impressed by Cramond Residence. We decided he would stay for 4 weeks' respite and then review the situation. For the first 2 weeks, Dad had to isolate in his room, according to guidelines. Which was a hard start for him but made all the more easier by the wonderful and caring staff who looked after his every need. He was then allowed his freedom and could choose if he wanted to partake in the numerous activities offered, have his meals in the dining room or walk around the lovely garden. His respite period is now over and we have made the decision that this will be Dad's new home. It's one of the hardest choices I have had to make, and still early days, but I believe he couldn't be in safer or more caring hands.

My sister was diagnosed with frontal lobe dementia in September 2019. She needed 24-hour care. She was admitted to Cramond on 17th December 2019 and very sadly died there on June 1st 2021. She was very happy there, every one of the staff were wonderful and she was looked after so well I wanted the best care for her and she certainly got it at Cramond Residence.

Reply from Eileen Gray, General Manager at Cramond Residence
Dear Anne, thank you for the positive review of the care delivered at Cramond Residence. It was a pleasure for us to look after your sister and following admission she very quickly established herself in the hearts of all the staff.

She is sorely missed and we still feel the lack of her presence in the home. I will pass on your kind words to all the team. Best wishes.

My husband passed away two years ago and since that time I have been living on my own, which has been extremely difficult, particularly since my husband and I had only just moved to Scotland. A short time before he died, Cramond was recommended to me by a friend of my son, who is an A&E consultant. Cramond is wonderful and the friendships I have made here have given me a new life.

It was my service user and friend's 83rd Birthday and a visit to her twin sibling who is a Cramond Resident was organised a while ago. On our arrival, I was very saddened that there nothing prepared. Both of them have advanced dementia. I was surprised that the twin residing at Cramond was not dressed for the occasion, also during our 1-hour visit nothing was offered to them on their special day. To be honest I am disappointed and upset.

Overall Experience

Our experience at Cramond Residence has been excellent and professional. An urgent assessment and admission was carried out in order to provide care for my 95-year-old mother-in-law with a broken wrist. Her stay was intended to be a short stay and during her four weeks, she tells us she was cared for with great professionalism and sensitivity. This admission was during lockdown. She had several tests for the virus and we were confident that the staff were being tested very regularly. My mother-in-law has thoroughly enjoyed the quality of care, the company and friendliness of the staff, excellent meals and the great comfort of her surroundings. All arrangements for her care were thoroughly and sensitively discussed.

My mother has advanced dementia and uses a wheelchair. She arrived in the dementia wing of Cramond Residence six months ago in the middle of lockdown, and so spent her first 14 days there quarantined in her room as a routine precaution. Throughout that time and since, she has been very well looked after and regained lost weight. The staff are very attentive, motivated and conscientious in making sure my mother is clean, comfortable, well-fed, entertained and smiling. There's a good staff/resident ratio, which makes for a smooth operation and a happy team with a good deal of laughter with the residents. I haven't seen any signs of stress among staff even when my mother is being challenging, as dementia patients sometimes are. There's an excellent level of communication with me in person, on the phone, by video call, email or via the Care Planning website and app, which provides very detailed updates throughout each day and night. The residence is very well appointed and immaculately clean.

We couldn't have been more impressed with the care our father received during his short term stay at Cramond Residence after a hip operation. He suffers from dementia and was left traumatised from a problematic stay in a badly run hospital, but the staff at Cramond helped immeasurably in settling him in and abating his anxiety and stress. They were very engaged in keeping us in the loop about his care and progress, and one carer, in particular, was a wonderful help to our father. The staff went above and beyond to secure our father's favourite tipple when they realised they didn't have it in stock.

The standard of the facility itself is very high and like that of a five-star hotel, and the range of activities means our father was engaged and kept mentally stimulated. Our father was able to come home earlier than expected and we put this down to the care he received. We highly recommend it.

As I live a long way from my mum, the choice of respite care for her was very important. The Crammond Residence is without a doubt a first-class home. My mother has stayed on several occasions, and the friendly and attentive staff have always made her feel valued and at home. The quality of facilities, food and care is superb. I would not hesitate to recommend this home for either respite or full-time care. I would also consider myself most fortunate if I was lucky enough in my old age to spend some time here myself! My Mum moved into Cramond Residence in March 2020, having visited several nursing homes in 2019, and deciding that Cramond was her preference. She's been happy with her choice - delightful and capable staff, excellent food and pre-dinner drinks, super rooms - very modern, spacious and well equipped. Cramond really feels like a smart hotel, with plenty of quiet space to sit and chat. I've been hugely impressed by the staff, and how they have coped during the Covid-19 challenges. I certainly feel that my Mum is in safe hands.

My sister was a resident for 6 months until she died at the end of March 2020. I have nothing but praise for the quality of the nursing care she received throughout her time in the residence. As she suffered from dementia she frequently required assistance with the most elementary procedures. The patience of the staff was extraordinary whether it was a strictly a nursing matter or simply the use of the telephone.
As a frequent visitor to the Residence I was always made to feel very welcome and nothing was ever too much trouble if I wanted to have a discussion about any aspect of her time there.
I should like to make a comment which I hope will be taken constructively and not critically.

At the end of my sister's life I did not see her due to Lockdown for her last few days. I was allowed in just after she had died; I thought it might have been kind if I had been allowed in, say, an hour earlier before she had died.

My cousin was in Cramond Residence for six months. The care and attention that was given to her was excellent. She suffered from dementia and cancer and needed a lot of support and guidance. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff, they were very caring indeed. I live quite a distance away and when I came to see her I often had a meal in the care home with her. Again that was no trouble and always very enjoyable. We appreciated being able to share a meal with her in privacy.
As my cousin deteriorated and got weaker, the care she got could not be faulted, it was obvious how fond of her the staff were. Also they were always happy to chat to us and answer any of our questions.
We were very sorry not to be able to visit her during lockdown when she was getting weaker but understand why.

Thank you for the care given to her.

Mum has stayed in the Cramond Residence twice now in the past twelve months for respite or recuperation from falls at home and both times the standard of care has been outstanding. Being modern and fairly new it's extremely well designed and feels more like a five-star hotel than a care home with beautiful rooms and excellent facilities. The staff were all very caring and friendly and always took time to have a good chat with mum no matter how busy they were at the time. I really can't praise them enough. Her appetite and weight were not good at all before she visited -especially after a hospital stay - but the food at Cramond was absolutely excellent and she thoroughly enjoyed it including all the home baking. All the meals were very well nutritionally balanced which greatly helped her recovery too and she gained weight both times. Mum also had physiotherapy twice a week while she was in which also substantially helped her recovery and walking. I would highly recommend it.

My father has been a resident at Cramond for over a year and has flourished in a welcoming and friendly environment there. The level of medical and general care and the one-to-one support has been excellent, with plenty of time for regular interaction with staff members. His room is comfortable and bright with good bathroom facilities. Equally important are the many comfortable communal spaces where he can interact with other residents and meet friends and family (albeit not in the COVID-19 crisis).

The food at the care home is excellent with a good choice of tasty and nutritious meals. The ability to book the dining experience and share special occasions with family and friends has proved very successful and has been greatly enjoyed by my father.

I would particularly emphasise the flexibility of the staff, ensuring that his individual needs are met. He has been supported to pursue his academic interests in the home which is very important for his wellbeing.

General Manager of Cramond Residence

Daniela Zampieri
Daniela ZampieriJob Title:Deputy ManagerJoined: 2019

I support the General Manager with the running of Cramond Residence and I work at his side to lead and manage the care team.

I’m responsible for providing high-quality and safe care and for monitoring its delivery. I also supervise and support the care team, maintain a safe environment for residents, staff and visitors, and ensure that the Residence complies with the National Care Standards, NMC code of conduct and the requirements of the Care Inspectorate.

I participate in the recruitment and selection of staff and I actively promote the Residence’s objectives – with a view to driving forward the continuous improvement and development of the service we offer, in cooperation with the Management Team.

On a daily basis, I work closely with our charge nurses to manage the various unit teams. My priority is that all residents get the highest possible quality of care.

Can you tell us a little about yourself and your background?

I’m originally from Italy, where I qualified as a nurse in 1997 (I have a Master's Degree in nursing education and management). I also studied Human Resources at university and obtained a second degree in this discipline.

In my career in my home country, I worked in a number of different hospitals and on a range of specialist wards, so I have experience of many types of clinical care.

I came to Scotland with my husband just a few years ago, as we both felt that we wanted to experience a new country and a new culture. We also wanted to improve our English. Since we’ve been here, we’ve been blessed with the arrival of a daughter – a wonderful gift. We love living in Edinburgh, we even love the weather here – the summer in Italy is just too hot!

I started working in the care sector in Scotland as a Unit Manager in 2012 and I have been a Deputy Manager since 2020, just before the pandemic hit. This meant that my last few years working in care have been at a very challenging time, but this has also meant that I have learnt a lot. I began work here at Cramond Residence as Deputy Manager early in 2022.

What do you most like about working at Cramond Residence

I like to make a real difference to people’s lives, especially to elderly people. That’s why I like the fact that Cramond Residence is really focused on providing a high quality of life. Because of this, the Residents are treated as individuals with respect, compassion, honesty and dignity.

In addition, having studied both nursing and human resources at university, I am very pleased that I can combine these two passions and interests in my current job.

At Cramond Residence, we use Personalised Care Plans, as we value people and actively involve them in the planning of their care. This means that every care plan is unique and specific for each person.

To deliver these plans, every single member of the staff works together to achieve the goal of high-quality care and I’m very excited to be part of this great team. We have staff who come from many different backgrounds and who have a wide range of skills – I love to support them in their work, promote their growth and help them succeed.

I also like the tailored training supplied at Cramond Residence, which is definitely one of the key reasons why we are able to achieve excellence in the care we provide.

What motivates you?

I really believe that enhancing people’s quality of life is the most important aspect of the job we do here at Cramond Residence, and that it is how we can make a vital difference in residents’ lives.

What makes people happy can be highly subjective, this is why it is extremely important to actively listen to residents. That’s why we provide an integrated care approach and work as a multidisciplinary team, involving residents, next of kin, GPs, care assistants, nurses, physiotherapists, hospital at home teams, dietitians, etc. This is what really motivates me.

When I worked in hospitals the majority of the people only remained in the wards for a short period of time. At Cramond Residence, I can get to know the residents I look after and help them to live a dignified life. It is wonderful to be able to share their memories, experiences, wishes and expectations.

What else do you like about Cramond Residence?

I really appreciate the fact that Cramond offers residents such a beautiful environment in which they can relax and go about their days.

When it comes to quality of life, I also think that activities are very important. We are therefore working hard to continually improve and enhance the range of events, activities, hobbies and outings that we offer.

Food is another vital part of this jigsaw. For me food should not just be about nutrition (although this is very important) it should also be delicious and enjoyable and mealtimes should be something that people look forward to. At Cramond, we offer delicious food in high quality surroundings. We have lovely cups, plates, cutlery and napkins – it’s little things like this that help people feel more appreciated and more respected.

Are there any aspect of the job that are challenging?

Everything at Cramond Residence works very smoothly because we have some excellent management tools in place, including electronic systems that manage the delivery of medication and the implementation of care plans. However, because these were new systems to me, there was a steep learning curve when I started to use them. Luckily, I had excellent training and everyone was by my side to help me work things out.

I deliver care to our residents, but also make sure that my team of nurses and carers have the right knowledge, skills and experience, so that, together, we do what’s best for the residents and their families. My job therefore involves a fair bit training and, crucially, making sure that staff put their training into practice. If you were to give me a specific label, you would probably describe me as an end of life care specialist. It’s a job I love – I’ve been giving care for over 42 years as a nurse.

Nursing care is quite complex, particularly when you’re supporting residents living with dementia, because you have to think about each individual’s emotional wellbeing, their physical wellbeing, and the fact that the disease process means that one day can be very different to the next. So you have to be able to go with the flow. If it’s a good day for the resident, you should make the most of it, if not, you have to draw on your expertise to help make sure they’re as comfortable as possible.
