There are few decisions harder in one's life than supporting your fiercely independent 98-year-old mother to go into care - especially when you had agreed with her it would never happen. But in the 18 months my mother was a resident at Cramond care home I have nothing but praise for their support of
her independence, dignity and willingness to get to know her as a person and their honesty with me. Each difficult decision I had to make was supported openly and unjudgementally. They kept in regular contact, provided advice and were proactive. The dignity of her death on the 29th of December was amazing. As she left the building the people who had cared for her, engaged with her and supported me were at her side - what more could one ask?
Reply from Christian Daraio, Client Liaison Manager at Cramond ResidenceWe are extremely grateful for your kind words and feedback. Supporting your mother during the time she has spent at Cramond Residence has been a true honour - we sincerely miss her. Life has the extraordinary ability to continuously pose challenges across our path - despite your agreement we feel privileged of having had the opportunity to get to know your mother and hope that we have been able to provide her and your whole family with an environment that has allowed you to feel safe about the level of care and support she received and that has allowed you to spend quality time with her during your frequent visits. Kind regards, Christian.

I had two weeks of respite following an operation in August 2022 and a further two weeks in November 2022 following another operation.
Top of the list has to be the friendly competence of the staff, everyone without exception. At the risk of leaving someone out and in no particular order, the nursing
staff, they, who must be obeyed. The lady who kept my room clean and tidy, the carers who were magically there when I needed something. Nothing was a problem they did fix everything, even finding my laundry. The kitchen staff made a bespoke salad for my lunch and produced melt-in-the-mouth tastes brought around by cheerful folk with the morning and afternoon tea trolley. The night staff was reassuringly there. Plus the availability of physios is essential for mending joints.
All this in five-star hotel accommodation, with space to walk, inside and out. A good atmosphere all around.

My elderly parents moved into Cramond Residence last month. Both are very frail with various health concerns. They and the family have appreciated the sympathetic, practical and professional care provided by all the staff and the genuine kindness, helpfulness and ongoing support for both parents at
all times. In addition to nursing and personal care, both parents have benefited from individual physiotherapy sessions, hairdressing, and other services available at the residence. They also enjoy the range of meals and making menu choices for the following day. My mother was especially touched on one occasion at having a freshly made sandwich carefully brought to her with a cup of tea at 4 am! Both parents participate in some of the varied communal activities, with the group fitness sessions being described as "really good fun!"
The bright, comfortable and welcoming environment at Cramond Residence continues to reassure us that our parents are in the best possible place.

My wife, who lives with advanced vascular dementia, enjoyed a 2-week "Respite Break" at Cramond Residence. As we stay only a mile away, we knew of the excellent reputation and were not disappointed. We planned well ahead, but found that there were very few places offering the respite care we needed
for the fixed dates I wished to be away. Once we made contact, the entire experience was pleasant: Administration very good; Nurses caring and patient; Support Staff welcoming and keen to help. Friends and Family, who visited my Wife in my absence, were impressed by the luxurious ambience and the welcome they received despite the lingering constraints of COVID. As this was the first time, in 5 years of living with dementia, that I had to leave my Wife with non-Family. Carers, I was reassured that she was in safe hands and that Cramond Residence contacted me to help resolve minor difficulties. Cramond Residence seemed expensive, but I suspect that anywhere of the high standard would cost much the same.
Reply from Christian Daraio, Client Liaison Manager at Cramond ResidenceThank you so much for your kind words, we appreciate you taking the time to share your experience with us - we are glad your wife has enjoyed her stay and that you felt reassured by the high standards we offer here at Cramond Residence, we look forward to seeing you again. My mum moved into Cramond Residence 3 months ago, this is a difficult time for many families as it is a significant life event and families often have disagreements. The management at Cramond negotiated this with great tact and were professional at all times. Mum has settled in very well and the activities
team in particular have done a great job at entertaining her with lots of choice on the monthly activities calendar. The home itself is wonderfully appointed and the staff all very friendly.
Mum really enjoys her food and the great menu was part of her decision to choose this accommodation, she is very happy with the meals and actually managed to put on some weight which is great.
Reply from Christian Daraio, Client Liaison Manager at Cramond ResidenceMany thanks for taking the time to complete this review, we appreciate your valuable feedback. It has been our pleasure being able to provide assistance to your mum and your family during this delicate decision and are glad your mum has settled in well and actively participates in the daily activities with fellow residents.

My mum moved to the Cramond Residence in August. After my dad died, she was struggling to look after herself and was lonely.
We looked at several care homes in Edinburgh but had little hesitation in selecting this one. From the minute that you walk into the reception area, there is a feeling of friendliness,
competence and professionalism.
The process for joining the home is straightforward and the manager was responsive, knowledgeable and sympathetic.
Mum was able to bring some furniture from home as well as some pictures for the wall.
The staff are kind and considerate and always accommodate individual requirements.
Mum is busy with a broad range of activities and has quickly made new friends. She likes the food and enjoys the company of friends and staff. In-house access to doctors, hairdressing, physio, podiatrist etc is great.
Cramond Residence has given Mum a new lease of life. Huge credit to the staff for their care. I would not hesitate to recommend Cramond Residence.
Reply from Christian Daraio, Client Liaison Manager at Cramond ResidenceMany thanks for your kind words and great review. The process of moving my mother into the Cramond Residence earlier this year was extremely smooth. The staff were very patient and understanding throughout and made her feel more relaxed and welcomed than we ever could have expected. She settled in quickly and has definitely benefitted from and enjoyed
the daily activities and the engagement with other residents. The facilities are amazing, the staff are terrific and the daily updates we receive via the App keep us up to date with what she is doing and most importantly her mental and physical welfare. We can't recommend Cramond Residence highly enough - it is genuinely a special place where we know mum receives the highest quality of care and support.

I am a companion to the lady who stayed at Cramond for a two-week respite while I went on holiday. I was really impressed with the quality of care reported by my friend. Before going to Cramond Care she showed a reluctance and told me she was only going because I needed a holiday. On returning home
she informed me that she was more than happy to return to Cramond care any time I needed time off. She loved the food and the staff and the fact that when she had visitors they could sit down for a meal with them. As a friend, I thought the level of care, thoughtfulness, and clarity shown to my friend was impressive. I have no qualms about my friend being cared for at Cramond.

I brought Mum to Cramond Residence in mid-September, leaving her home of 50+ years behind. It was a big step for mum and a real change in her life. She settled in really quickly, I came to visit on the following day expecting to find her upset in her room, she was watching the Queen on the big screen
with other residents, quite happy. You can imagine my relief at seeing her so settled so quickly.
Over the following weeks, I have seen a warm, smiling and happy mum on a video call and when I go to visit. She loves the outings and activities, some more than others. The staff are lovely and really engage with the residents. I am told that the food is good, I've enjoyed coffee and cake when I visit.
Mum enjoys her daily walk around the gardens unless it's too cold or wet. I would certainly recommend Cramond, over the years I have read horror stories about Care Homes, and it is so good to have found in Cramond a care home of such a high calibre.

My mum moved to Cramond in August 2022, having lost my dad after 58 years of marriage. She has settled in so well. We returned to Cramond Residence in September for my father's second respite visit this year.
The whole staff team was extremely warm and welcoming. The care staff gave excellent care and attention to my father on both of his visits.

Had visited Cramond Residence pre-Covid with a view to future care. What a lovely, well-run, friendly place. After an accident, respite care was required and the manager handled the unexpectedly quick admission professionally and without fuss. This is the perfect place to be looked after. Pleasant surroundings
and good, tempting food. Most important is that staff are there to encourage the patient out of bed and onto their feet. Physio and nursing and dementia care are also offered. The manager has been available, sympathetic and accommodating at all times. We were very impressed that Cramond has established an innovative connection with a college and groups of young adults attend to aid companionship and mental stimulation.

My daughter organised my stay at the Cramond Residence in July this year. For me, my stay turned out to be the most enjoyable experience. My room in Bonaly was a good size for an en suite which was well maintained throughout my stay thanks to an efficient cleaning staff. As soon as I arrived at reception
I was made most welcome, which put me at my ease. The nursing staff were very caring and most pleasant throughout my stay. They coped well with my immobility. I found the food to be a good standard and I enjoyed a lager with my lunch and wine at dinner. The activities were quite varied. I was not able to take advantage of some of the facilities provided. Doing exercises to a video was beyond me! The grounds were well-planned and immaculately maintained giving the residence an excellent appearance. It gave me the opportunity to sit outside in the sun.

We placed our grandmother into Crammond Residence for what was supposed to be a short period of time. She, unfortunately, had a fall and went downhill. The staff at this care home are amazing, every one of them treated my grandmother with the utmost respect and dignity right up until the end. The standards
of cleanliness, security and facilities are second to none. It isn't by any means the cheapest care home but they definitely do provide! You can't put a price on family members and this home was outstanding. If looking for somewhere in Edinburgh with that extra flare and have the means then look no further!

This was the second time my elderly aunt spent some time at the Cramond Residence. Just as was the case the first time, our contact and conversations during urgent arrangements for the recuperation (after hip fracture) stay were flawless and exemplary. The client liaison manager is exceptionally helpful
and ensured that everything and everyone was ready for my aunt on her arrival.
The place is beautiful, clean, cheerful and feels rather more like a hotel than a care home.
The carers, nurses, receptionists, cleaners, physios, cooks, as well as visiting doctors and others (hairdressers etc.) could not have been nicer, more professional or more competent.
We were delighted with every aspect of my aunt's care and she returned home after about eight weeks far stronger and more mobile. We have no hesitation in her returning for respite in the future. We just have to hope that there will be space. It is a superb place!
Reply from Christian Daraio, Client Liaison Manager at Cramond ResidenceThank you for your valuable feedback and kind words. My mum was unable to receive the palliative care she needed at home after unsuccessful cancer treatment in the autumn of last year. She moved into Cramond Residence in February and received excellent care during her final four months.
Her room was a good size, well decorated and made to feel her own.
The care provided was excellent and the team kept me in touch with developments during those periods when I was not able to visit.
The nights were particularly difficult for Mum as she tended to doze during the day. She was particularly grateful for the conversations which took place with the care staff during those times.
Food and drink were always a good standard with the staff keen to meet requests for particular items.
My mother-in-law is still a resident at Cramond and everything that applies to my mum's stay is true for her.
I have recommended Cramond to friends seeking care for elderly relatives given the excellent experience we have had.

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.857 for Cramond Residence is calculated as follows: ( (391 Excellents x 5) + (35 Goods x 4) + (1 Poors x 2) + (6 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 433 Ratings = 4.857
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Cramond Residence is based on 36 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 74 registered maximum number of service users is 14.8, which has been reached with 36 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Job Title: Deputy Manager Joined: 2019

I support the General Manager with the running of Cramond Residence and I work at his side to lead and manage the care team.

I’m responsible for providing high-quality and safe care and for monitoring its delivery. I also supervise and support the care team, maintain a safe environment for residents, staff and visitors, and ensure that the Residence complies with the National Care Standards, NMC code of conduct and the requirements of the Care Inspectorate.

I participate in the recruitment and selection of staff and I actively promote the Residence’s objectives – with a view to driving forward the continuous improvement and development of the service we offer, in cooperation with the Management Team.

On a daily basis, I work closely with our charge nurses to manage the various unit teams. My priority is that all residents get the highest possible quality of care.

Can you tell us a little about yourself and your background?

I’m originally from Italy, where I qualified as a nurse in 1997 (I have a Master's Degree in nursing education and management). I also studied Human Resources at university and obtained a second degree in this discipline.

In my career in my home country, I worked in a number of different hospitals and on a range of specialist wards, so I have experience of many types of clinical care.

I came to Scotland with my husband just a few years ago, as we both felt that we wanted to experience a new country and a new culture. We also wanted to improve our English. Since we’ve been here, we’ve been blessed with the arrival of a daughter – a wonderful gift. We love living in Edinburgh, we even love the weather here – the summer in Italy is just too hot!

I started working in the care sector in Scotland as a Unit Manager in 2012 and I have been a Deputy Manager since 2020, just before the pandemic hit. This meant that my last few years working in care have been at a very challenging time, but this has also meant that I have learnt a lot. I began work here at Cramond Residence as Deputy Manager early in 2022.

What do you most like about working at Cramond Residence

I like to make a real difference to people’s lives, especially to elderly people. That’s why I like the fact that Cramond Residence is really focused on providing a high quality of life. Because of this, the Residents are treated as individuals with respect, compassion, honesty and dignity.

In addition, having studied both nursing and human resources at university, I am very pleased that I can combine these two passions and interests in my current job.

At Cramond Residence, we use Personalised Care Plans, as we value people and actively involve them in the planning of their care. This means that every care plan is unique and specific for each person.

To deliver these plans, every single member of the staff works together to achieve the goal of high-quality care and I’m very excited to be part of this great team. We have staff who come from many different backgrounds and who have a wide range of skills – I love to support them in their work, promote their growth and help them succeed.

I also like the tailored training supplied at Cramond Residence, which is definitely one of the key reasons why we are able to achieve excellence in the care we provide.

What motivates you?

I really believe that enhancing people’s quality of life is the most important aspect of the job we do here at Cramond Residence, and that it is how we can make a vital difference in residents’ lives.

What makes people happy can be highly subjective, this is why it is extremely important to actively listen to residents. That’s why we provide an integrated care approach and work as a multidisciplinary team, involving residents, next of kin, GPs, care assistants, nurses, physiotherapists, hospital at home teams, dietitians, etc. This is what really motivates me.

When I worked in hospitals the majority of the people only remained in the wards for a short period of time. At Cramond Residence, I can get to know the residents I look after and help them to live a dignified life. It is wonderful to be able to share their memories, experiences, wishes and expectations.

What else do you like about Cramond Residence?

I really appreciate the fact that Cramond offers residents such a beautiful environment in which they can relax and go about their days.

When it comes to quality of life, I also think that activities are very important. We are therefore working hard to continually improve and enhance the range of events, activities, hobbies and outings that we offer.

Food is another vital part of this jigsaw. For me food should not just be about nutrition (although this is very important) it should also be delicious and enjoyable and mealtimes should be something that people look forward to. At Cramond, we offer delicious food in high quality surroundings. We have lovely cups, plates, cutlery and napkins – it’s little things like this that help people feel more appreciated and more respected.

Are there any aspect of the job that are challenging?

Everything at Cramond Residence works very smoothly because we have some excellent management tools in place, including electronic systems that manage the delivery of medication and the implementation of care plans. However, because these were new systems to me, there was a steep learning curve when I started to use them. Luckily, I had excellent training and everyone was by my side to help me work things out.

Job Title: Charge Nurse Joined: 2020

I deliver care to our residents, but also make sure that my team of nurses and carers have the right knowledge, skills and experience, so that, together, we do what’s best for the residents and their families. My job therefore involves a fair bit training and, crucially, making sure that staff put their training into practice. If you were to give me a specific label, you would probably describe me as an end of life care specialist. It’s a job I love – I’ve been giving care for over 42 years as a nurse.

Nursing care is quite complex, particularly when you’re supporting residents living with dementia, because you have to think about each individual’s emotional wellbeing, their physical wellbeing, and the fact that the disease process means that one day can be very different to the next. So you have to be able to go with the flow. If it’s a good day for the resident, you should make the most of it, if not, you have to draw on your expertise to help make sure they’re as comfortable as possible.
