I arrived at Cramond Residence for rehabilitation following a hip replacement, at a mere 53 years old I was the youngest resident by far! Cramond Residence is simply amazing! The staff, without exception, are incredible. The love, care, attention and endless time given to each resident is exemplary.
Nothing was ever too much trouble. Everyone has their own daily needs and routines and the staff provide one to one care. The building is split into 9 houses, same faces (both staff and residents) on each corridor and no overwhelming big spaces. I was lucky enough to be in Bonaly House and the whole team, day and night, were just incredible. It's not a job that I could do and I take my hat off to each and everyone here that has chosen a career in care. Amazing people. The highlight of each day was the mealtimes (3 courses twice a day!) and the 11am coffee/biscuit run and the 3pm coffee/cake cart! The food was amazing! Two weeks on I can safely say that this was the best decision I ever made!

First class facilities, with excellent attentive staff. Really professional in every aspect of the care provided from initial booking until the end of stay, keeping us informed and up to date throughout. Nothing was a problem for the nursing or admin staff.

My sisters and I met the client liaison manager and he showed us around Cramond Residence and we loved it. He was brilliant at explaining everything and mentioned that they were having an open day so I attended with my mum. The staff were helpful and wonderful!
Mum loved it and decided this was the
place for her! She is now a resident and loves it. The staff are fantastic - happy, helpful and absolutely incredible. The lifestyle consultants are busy planning daily activities and are full of fun. Mum had a spa day today! Last week she was line dancing and at movie night. The staff are all so incredible. They are simply the best ever! Thank you all.
This feels like an American senior living place in a beautiful setting. If you are looking for a fantastic place for a parent or relative - look no further. Cramond Residence is a magical place where residents are so happy and the setting is fabulous! It truly is outstanding.
Thank you to every single member of staff for making Mum so happy. Thank you!

I chose to be admitted to the Cramond Residence following a left hip replacement. I know the importance of wound care and physiotherapy team and the nursing and physiotherapy team did not let me down. The home was clean, the environment warm and friendly. Each team helps each other and are all very
caring and kind. A glass of wine with dinner was also well received. All staff were attentive and any help requested was met with efficiently.

We were really disappointed with the service provided.
My mother was due to attend for 2 weeks respite but we took her out early. I turned up twice at 10 am and she was awake in a dark room, still in her pyjamas and had soiled herself. When I asked the nurses why she wasn't up yet they said that 8
am she didn't want to get up. I asked them to get her changed and ready when I arrived and asked if she had had breakfast, they had to check. When they said she hadn't but breakfast was available if she requested it, I had to point out that she has no way to communicate so this was a big issue.
Later one day I asked a nurse if she could take her to the bathroom as she needed the toilet. Due to the nurses' lack of English, she was taken for a bath. I pointed out that it was the loo she needed and not the bath. My mum was desperate by this stage but the nurse had to go off to find a transfer aid. This took well over 5 mins by which time my mum was getting distraught.

I enjoyed my fortnight's respite care at Cramond and extended my stay for 2 weeks.
I found the staff very helpful and anxious I should have all I required.
They arranged for me to see the local GP on three occasions and got the necessary prescriptions very quickly.
Good prompt service in my room
at meals.
I found the food varied but sometimes too spicy for an older person. The chef did discuss this with me.
Very good service in between meals. And In my room at mealtimes.
Very helpful by transporting me to and from the dentist on 2 occasions and home at the end of my stay.
Could have joined in daily groups but was there to get over Sciatica so often chose to rest. Good expedition to the garden centre in Stockbridge one afternoon.
Weekly physio - 1 group and one private lesson included- very useful.
Beautiful garden and perfect circular walking path much used.
Would come again.

My wife was a resident at Cramond Residence following a hip replacement and spent one week in their care. We had heard lots of positive things about the care and support at Cramond, so we decided this was a good starting point for her rehabilitation. To say 'good' somewhat undersells our experience
at Cramond Residence; the care that my wife (and I when I visited) received was nothing short of outstanding, covering everything from support with personal care, great food (essential for the recovery process!), fantastic physiotherapy sessions to having her own room which was so beautifully decorated. All the staff was so kind, caring, and good-humoured; when I left after my daily visit, I could relax, knowing my wife was in excellent hands. 10/10 - highly recommended!

I was a resident at Cramond Residence for 2 weeks, following a hip replacement operation. I live on my own and was recently widowed, so there was no one to care for me at home in the initial weeks following the surgery. Cramond Residence proved to be a very special place where I was able to receive

My mother was a resident at Cramond Residence for eight months till her recent death. She had wonderful care and attention and was happy there. The staff were so caring and kind, not only to her but to us her family. I work as a GP in a different city and often have cause to visit my patients in nursing
homes. Cramond Residence surpassed any other nursing homes I have experienced professionally. The garden was a constant source of delight and pleasure and the activities on offer were extraordinarily varied and fun. The regular physiotherapy was wonderful and the plentiful supply of tea, coffee and delicious home baking was an added bonus, especially for her visitors. The residence itself is very comfortable and pleasant and there are plenty of areas to sit in relative privacy out of your relative’s bedroom. I really cannot praise her carers highly enough. They treated her with such care, compassion, humour and dignity. She was full of praise for every one.

There are few decisions harder in one's life than supporting your fiercely independent 98-year-old mother to go into care - especially when you had agreed with her it would never happen. But in the 18 months my mother was a resident at Cramond care home I have nothing but praise for their support of
her independence, dignity and willingness to get to know her as a person and their honesty with me. Each difficult decision I had to make was supported openly and unjudgementally. They kept in regular contact, provided advice and were proactive. The dignity of her death on the 29th of December was amazing. As she left the building the people who had cared for her, engaged with her and supported me were at her side - what more could one ask?

I had two weeks of respite following an operation in August 2022 and a further two weeks in November 2022 following another operation.
Top of the list has to be the friendly competence of the staff, everyone without exception. At the risk of leaving someone out and in no particular order, the nursing
staff, they, who must be obeyed. The lady who kept my room clean and tidy, the carers who were magically there when I needed something. Nothing was a problem they did fix everything, even finding my laundry. The kitchen staff made a bespoke salad for my lunch and produced melt-in-the-mouth tastes brought around by cheerful folk with the morning and afternoon tea trolley. The night staff was reassuringly there. Plus the availability of physios is essential for mending joints.
All this in five-star hotel accommodation, with space to walk, inside and out. A good atmosphere all around.

My elderly parents moved into Cramond Residence last month. Both are very frail with various health concerns. They and the family have appreciated the sympathetic, practical and professional care provided by all the staff and the genuine kindness, helpfulness and ongoing support for both parents at
all times. In addition to nursing and personal care, both parents have benefited from individual physiotherapy sessions, hairdressing, and other services available at the residence. They also enjoy the range of meals and making menu choices for the following day. My mother was especially touched on one occasion at having a freshly made sandwich carefully brought to her with a cup of tea at 4 am! Both parents participate in some of the varied communal activities, with the group fitness sessions being described as "really good fun!"
The bright, comfortable and welcoming environment at Cramond Residence continues to reassure us that our parents are in the best possible place.

My wife, who lives with advanced vascular dementia, enjoyed a 2-week "Respite Break" at Cramond Residence. As we stay only a mile away, we knew of the excellent reputation and were not disappointed. We planned well ahead, but found that there were very few places offering the respite care we needed
for the fixed dates I wished to be away. Once we made contact, the entire experience was pleasant: Administration very good; Nurses caring and patient; Support Staff welcoming and keen to help. Friends and Family, who visited my Wife in my absence, were impressed by the luxurious ambience and the welcome they received despite the lingering constraints of COVID. As this was the first time, in 5 years of living with dementia, that I had to leave my Wife with non-Family. Carers, I was reassured that she was in safe hands and that Cramond Residence contacted me to help resolve minor difficulties. Cramond Residence seemed expensive, but I suspect that anywhere of the high standard would cost much the same.

My mum moved into Cramond Residence 3 months ago, this is a difficult time for many families as it is a significant life event and families often have disagreements. The management at Cramond negotiated this with great tact and were professional at all times. Mum has settled in very well and the activities
team in particular have done a great job at entertaining her with lots of choice on the monthly activities calendar. The home itself is wonderfully appointed and the staff all very friendly.
Mum really enjoys her food and the great menu was part of her decision to choose this accommodation, she is very happy with the meals and actually managed to put on some weight which is great.

If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 74 registered maximum number of service users is 14.8, which has been reached with 32 Positive reviews. Points = 1

Daniela Zampieri

Job Title: Deputy Manager Joined: 2019

I support the General Manager with the running of Cramond Residence and I work at his side to lead and manage the care team.

I’m responsible for providing high-quality and safe care and for monitoring its delivery. I also supervise and support the care team, maintain a safe environment for residents, staff and visitors, and ensure that the Residence complies with the National Care Standards, NMC code of conduct and the requirements of the Care Inspectorate.

I participate in the recruitment and selection of staff and I actively promote the Residence’s objectives – with a view to driving forward the continuous improvement and development of the service we offer, in cooperation with the Management Team.

On a daily basis, I work closely with our charge nurses to manage the various unit teams. My priority is that all residents get the highest possible quality of care.

Can you tell us a little about yourself and your background?

I’m originally from Italy, where I qualified as a nurse in 1997 (I have a Master's Degree in nursing education and management). I also studied Human Resources at university and obtained a second degree in this discipline.

In my career in my home country, I worked in a number of different hospitals and on a range of specialist wards, so I have experience of many types of clinical care.

I came to Scotland with my husband just a few years ago, as we both felt that we wanted to experience a new country and a new culture. We also wanted to improve our English. Since we’ve been here, we’ve been blessed with the arrival of a daughter – a wonderful gift. We love living in Edinburgh, we even love the weather here – the summer in Italy is just too hot!

I started working in the care sector in Scotland as a Unit Manager in 2012 and I have been a Deputy Manager since 2020, just before the pandemic hit. This meant that my last few years working in care have been at a very challenging time, but this has also meant that I have learnt a lot. I began work here at Cramond Residence as Deputy Manager early in 2022.

What do you most like about working at Cramond Residence

I like to make a real difference to people’s lives, especially to elderly people. That’s why I like the fact that Cramond Residence is really focused on providing a high quality of life. Because of this, the Residents are treated as individuals with respect, compassion, honesty and dignity.

In addition, having studied both nursing and human resources at university, I am very pleased that I can combine these two passions and interests in my current job.

At Cramond Residence, we use Personalised Care Plans, as we value people and actively involve them in the planning of their care. This means that every care plan is unique and specific for each person.

To deliver these plans, every single member of the staff works together to achieve the goal of high-quality care and I’m very excited to be part of this great team. We have staff who come from many different backgrounds and who have a wide range of skills – I love to support them in their work, promote their growth and help them succeed.

I also like the tailored training supplied at Cramond Residence, which is definitely one of the key reasons why we are able to achieve excellence in the care we provide.

What motivates you?

I really believe that enhancing people’s quality of life is the most important aspect of the job we do here at Cramond Residence, and that it is how we can make a vital difference in residents’ lives.

What makes people happy can be highly subjective, this is why it is extremely important to actively listen to residents. That’s why we provide an integrated care approach and work as a multidisciplinary team, involving residents, next of kin, GPs, care assistants, nurses, physiotherapists, hospital at home teams, dietitians, etc. This is what really motivates me.

When I worked in hospitals the majority of the people only remained in the wards for a short period of time. At Cramond Residence, I can get to know the residents I look after and help them to live a dignified life. It is wonderful to be able to share their memories, experiences, wishes and expectations.

What else do you like about Cramond Residence?

I really appreciate the fact that Cramond offers residents such a beautiful environment in which they can relax and go about their days.

When it comes to quality of life, I also think that activities are very important. We are therefore working hard to continually improve and enhance the range of events, activities, hobbies and outings that we offer.

Food is another vital part of this jigsaw. For me food should not just be about nutrition (although this is very important) it should also be delicious and enjoyable and mealtimes should be something that people look forward to. At Cramond, we offer delicious food in high quality surroundings. We have lovely cups, plates, cutlery and napkins – it’s little things like this that help people feel more appreciated and more respected.

Are there any aspect of the job that are challenging?

Everything at Cramond Residence works very smoothly because we have some excellent management tools in place, including electronic systems that manage the delivery of medication and the implementation of care plans. However, because these were new systems to me, there was a steep learning curve when I started to use them. Luckily, I had excellent training and everyone was by my side to help me work things out.

Job Title: Charge Nurse Joined: 2020

I deliver care to our residents, but also make sure that my team of nurses and carers have the right knowledge, skills and experience, so that, together, we do what’s best for the residents and their families. My job therefore involves a fair bit training and, crucially, making sure that staff put their training into practice. If you were to give me a specific label, you would probably describe me as an end of life care specialist. It’s a job I love – I’ve been giving care for over 42 years as a nurse.

Nursing care is quite complex, particularly when you’re supporting residents living with dementia, because you have to think about each individual’s emotional wellbeing, their physical wellbeing, and the fact that the disease process means that one day can be very different to the next. So you have to be able to go with the flow. If it’s a good day for the resident, you should make the most of it, if not, you have to draw on your expertise to help make sure they’re as comfortable as possible.
