My mother has been a resident of Bickerton House since the beginning of this year. She needs care and help with everything and I can't praise all the staff enough for their round-the-clock care, their expertise and their kindness in everything they do. The carers keep her very clean and are so nice with her while washing or bringing her meals and drinks etc. Due to my mother's frailty and age, she needs help with everything and that help is always there. It has relieved myself and family of so much stress.

Although my mother was initially very reluctant to come to live in a care home, she has settled really well and is very happy. She has formed friendships with residents and strong bonds with many members of staff. She also joins in with many activities, which she did not have the opportunity to do before.

Mum, in her 90s, moved into Bickerton House two months ago, having previously been living independently in Suffolk. The move had to take place quite quickly and was understandably stressful but the staff, who are lovely, kind, caring people, have been brilliant in helping mum settle in, making her feel welcome in her new surroundings and keeping me informed. She has a lovely bright room, tastefully decorated, which we have been able to personalise with her own belongings, pictures and furnishings. Mum really enjoys the freshly prepared meals and the activities and facilities within the home, e.g. hair salon, cafe, garden, etc. give her variety and choice in how she spends her time. She has made new friends, is happy and no longer feels so anxious and worried about what the future holds. I would thoroughly recommend Bickerton House to anyone considering residential or respite care for a loved one.

We needed to find a care home for mum and dad quite urgently following both of them being in hospital over the summer. The staff were extremely helpful in the initial process, showing first me and then dad around the home and describing some of the lovely events that are organised for residents. Dad was very pleasantly surprised at what a modern care home looks like having his own mother's experience as a reference and was happy to give it a try! Bickerton House staff have been as one caring, kind and extremely supportive in settling both mum and dad into the home. It is clear in walking around the home with mum and dad, that the staff know them well and are keen to create as comfortable an environment for them as possible, nothing has been too much trouble. Mum and dad are loving the meals, the exercise classes, socialising with other residents and of course the coffee shop and treats! Thank you for all you are doing Bickerton House, it is a great relief to know they are in such caring hands!

We were in the fortunate position of our mum deciding herself that she needed extra care. We looked at many homes in the Berkshire area but, as soon as we had seen Bickerton, we knew it was the right place for Mum. They have not disappointed us in any way. The home itself is modern, clean and still presents as cosy. Mum's own room is large. She has a few pieces of personal furniture and was given all the assistance she needed to make the room her own.
The heart of Bickerton, however, is the staff team. They treat mum with dignity and respect that the space is her home. She is happier than she's been in years - engaging in hobbies again and getting out and about. She's having a new lease of life.

We couldn't be more thankful to everyone there.

A very big thank you to everyone at Bickerton House who has worked so hard to make my mum feel at home there. It's always very difficult choosing a care home for a loved one, especially one aged 95 who was very against the idea. Bickerton House has proved to be a wonderful choice due to its excellent facilities and the kindness and dedication of all the lovely friendly staff. Bickerton House is a very happy place and wraps its arms around you and makes you feel you belong. My mum has been there for 10 weeks now and is very settled and loving it there. I can relax knowing she is safe and well looked after. I would thoroughly recommend it.

I can not recommend Bickerton House highly enough. The home is beautifully decorated and always clean and tidy.
From walking in and meeting the reception team to the carers, cleaners and maintenance team everyone is highly professional, kind and caring.
Everyone always has a smile and welcomes you. The range of activities are excellent and the Lifestyle Coordinators work so hard to provide choice and variety for all the residents.

My friend that I visit is often having a one to one chat with one of the carers, they always have time for the residents and nothing is too much trouble.

Dad was in hospital when we found out that he needed full-time care. It’s stressful and a lot to process. We were anxious about choosing the right home for him.
From the beginning, the staff at Bickerton showed great care. They’re good at keeping us informed and the relationship works well. It puts us at ease, and we know dad gets the best care.
The tour really helped us visualise what life would be like for dad. It also feels good to know about all the activities and see pictures from time to time. It’s also a conversation starter when we visit.
Dad is a man few words, but he wanted us to know that the people are very good, and he feels well looked after.

I’m so pleased dads at Bickerton. You can see from photo’s that he looks so much better and happier there.

Bickerton House is an outstanding modern care home with plenty of available parking.
They fully comply with all the present Covid rules and regulations.
All the staff on the dementia section too many to individually mention have cared for my husband since June this year with great dignity and respect.
The administration team have kept me informed with information and guidance from the beginning of his stay.
The manager is very involved and keeps a good eye on everything going on in the care home. The lady on the reception is always very pleasant and helpful.
The business manager keeps all informed of all the events taking place.
The deputy manager has been outstanding giving me guidance and a great deal of her time helping me with complex forms.
All the staff have gone out of their way to help me with any problems and have always been available to talk about any issues.
I won’t ever forget the kindness shown to my husband and me at this very difficult time.

Thank you all September 2021

A complete change of lifestyle cannot be easy for a 90-year-old lady, but nonetheless, my aunt is settling well into Bickerton House and accepting that this is now her home. This is entirely due to the care she has received in trying to accommodate her needs. I know that staff members have sat with her and gone through photo albums with her for example. Just last week a cruise style lunch was put on for the residents with an invitation to the Captain's Table. Looking at the photos, a great deal of care went into preparing for this occasion, and I know my aunt was really looking forward to it. Comments and suggestions are always replied to and actioned promptly. Thank you to all the staff for their hard work.

My father stayed at Bickerton House for respite care in May 2021. From the moment I contacted the home, everybody was extremely helpful. My father enjoyed his stay very much. The staff are wonderful and the facilities are excellent. It gave me complete peace of mind he was being looked after while my husband and I took a short break. I cannot praise the home more - it is superb.

After a long year and struggling to find somewhere suitable for my mum, who has early-onset dementia, we found Bickerton House. From the moment we enquired they could not have been more helpful, everything was explained so well by the staff to us with regards to moving a relative in during Covid. Mum has settled so well and loves all the activities provided. Visits are well organised and nothing is ever too much trouble for the staff. Communication has been excellent so we know exactly how Mum is doing. Overall, in very tricky times, we couldn’t be happier with the service and care provided. Thank you Bickerton team!

My husband spent two weeks respite in Bickerton House and said that he immediately felt welcomed and comfortable commenting on good food and friendly helpful staff as well as a very well-appointed room/bathroom. I found the management very helpful in the time leading up to his admission and always available to answer our questions particularly during these difficult covid times. I felt confident that he would be well cared for in a safe environment, and this proved to be the case. We would certainly hope to use the care home again as the need arises.

My mother is very comfortable in a clean cosy room with television and en-suite facilities. The staff are very helpful when I phone to enquire on her wellbeing, and if they are busy when I telephone a member of staff will always telephone me back with the relevant information. If my mother does not want to choose a meal from the day's menu, the staff are very accommodating and will go to the kitchen to prepare her something else.

Due to these unprecedented times, my mother has had to spend a lot of time in and out of isolation, but the staff have always ensured she has had lots of social interaction. I feel content to know my mother is in a safe and caring environment, where her needs are of the utmost priority. Bickerton House Care Home has excellent facilities, all the staff are friendly and provide very professional care in their respective roles.

Bickerton House is superb. My wife and I were so very impressed by the communication from our initial enquiry until the point of arrival for my mother. From the moment my mother arrived right up until today she is a different person. Initially, my mother just wanted to go home but after a couple of days, due to the caring and friendly nature of the staff, her initial respite care visit of 1 month has turned into 2.
We, as a family, could not recommend Bickerton House enough. Anybody who chooses Bickerton House for a family member has no need to worry - they will be in safe, caring and friendly hands and the staff communicate well with family members to keep you abreast of everything your family member is up to.

Brilliant and first-class for everything that they do.

Meet the Team (1)

Michael Pallister
Michael PallisterJob Title:Home Manager

As Home Manager at Bickerton House, the most important part of my role is to make sure residents feel safe.

A big part of what I do is supporting my team. In particular, helping them navigate the healthcare sector which is always growing and developing. With that in mind, you also need to be well-organised and approachable. It helps that I can draw on my 15 years of experience and level five qualification in leadership.

When I first joined Care UK, I did so because its ethos reflected my own values and beliefs. A career highlight for me is the fact I have been able to work my way up through dedication and learning. Now, I feel proud to be part of a strong team that I have also helped grow. For us, it is about celebrating each other’s achievements and seeing how we can do even better.

Every day is different, but my favourite part is being able to spend time with residents and their families. I love finding out about their lives, getting to know them and listening to their wealth of knowledge.

Outside of work, we are an adventurous family and enjoy road trips and holidays. Having a very sporty son also means we spend a lot of time out and about supporting his activities.
