Portobello Place care home in Chartridge, just outside Chesham in Buckinghamshire, that opened in December 2019. It is a luxurious, purpose-built care home in an envious location, right in the heart of the Chilterns.

The care home is registered to care for 61 residents and aims to offer the highest standard of residential care when it opens its doors. With tasteful décor and luxurious furnishings throughout, a large bar and bistro area for residents to spend time with visiting friends and family, and the Bellingdon Bistro where cuisine of the finest quality is served, it’s easy to see why. Freshly cooked, nutritious food is served every day.

Run by Berkley Care Group, a small care group with a proven track record for high-quality care in the UK, Portobello Place is focused on caring for residents with dignity and respect, with wellbeing at the heart of it all.

The group's skilled, trained staff working for the group are paid above the living wage. And with more staff than the norm, there’s always time for the smaller but just as significant aspects of care, such as having a chat.

My father has been at Portobello Place for nearly 3 years now; it has been just the right place for him. We have really appreciated the care and love that he has been shown over this time through various ups and downs. I feel that we are kept well informed as family on all aspects of his overall care.
Many of the staff have known Dad for some time now and it has been really heartening to see the genuine affection they have for him.

Special mention to the events team who have been great in getting Dad involved in a wide variety of day-to-day activities and trips out. The food at Portobello is really excellent and was probably the clincher for Dad when we all came for our initial visit; the catering team really do a fantastic job.

Management run a tight ship and this shows with motivated, friendly and professional staff; we are confident in and grateful for the care that Dad receives at Portobello.

Reply from Tracy Barton, Operations Manager at Portobello PlaceThank you very much for taking the time to share such kind and thoughtful feedback about your father's care at Portobello Place. It is wonderful to hear how supported both he and your family have felt over the years.
I will be sure to pass your comments on to the wider team. Feedback like this means a great deal to everyone and is a real encouragement to our staff.

Thank you again for your confidence and trust in our team.

My mother was a reluctant resident having lived alone for 100 years. Since she has been at Portobello she has blossomed. She looks ten years younger and is joining in the activities and delighting in manicures, hair dos and trips out. She has made friends of the other residents and staff. On Sunday
we celebrated her 101st birthday with the help of the staff.
Cannot speak highly enough of everyone. Nothing is too much trouble.
Reply from Tracy Barton, Operations Manager at Portobello PlaceThank you so much for your kind and uplifting feedback. It is truly heartening to hear how well your mother has settled and how she has flourished since joining Portobello Place.

My friend, aged 96, has been a resident in Portobello Place for 2 and a half years. Ever since the current management team were put in place, everything about Portobello is 100% of what a concerned relative or friend would want. Particularly impressive are the frequency and variety of activities provided
for residents and the quality and choice of the food provided. I have never had a meal in the bistro that wasn't delicious and served by the friendliest of staff.
Reply from Cindy Alland, General Manager at Portobello PlaceThank you so much for your kind words, we really do appreciate it. Stating that everything about Portobello is 100% ! and that you are impressed with the activities provided, good food and friendly staff.

A wonderful team - from reception staff to personal carers, as a family we feel fully supported.

Not only do they care for the resident but they care for the entire family.

I came to Portobello for respite care, following a hip operation, for 2 weeks. My very comfortable room was provided with a hospital bed, and nothing was too much trouble for any of the staff, who were kind, friendly, respectful, without being patronising. The food here is of hotel quality and always
nutritious. Two things I would change - my bins should be emptied daily, and the intermittent loss of water pressure on 3rd floor.

My mother has been a resident for over 3 years and the care , consideration , kindness has been outstanding . All staff genuinely have a deep connection with my mother and know her on a personal level and consistently try to accomodate all her needs. Nothing seems too much trouble and they have a deep
affection for her and her welfare . Today the family visited and a member of staff went the extra mile to make our visit extra special for us and our Mother . We cannot thank the carer enough and my Mother was delighted. All the staff are wonderful and know us by name and are so welcoming
Reply from Tim Woolford, Customer Relations Manager at Portobello PlaceThank you so much for your kind and heartfelt words. Very good care in pleasant surroundings. Looked after Dad in the best way and left him to his own company when required. Activities available but not pushed as Dad wasn't always keen. Great food available in the bistro or his room which he enjoyed. Lovely room overlooking a patio which he could sit
in when sunny. Overall an enjoyable experience for someone who had only ever lived in his own home apart from National Service.
Reply from Tim Woolford, Customer Relations Manager at Portobello PlaceThank you so much for taking the time to share such kind words about your father's stay with us. We're so pleased to hear that he felt well cared for and comfortable in our home especially as this was such a significant change for him after so many years in his own home. It's lovely to know he enjoyed his room and the peaceful view of the patio, as well as the flexibility of dining either in the bistro or in his room. Our team always aims to respect each resident's preferences, so we're glad to hear that he was able to enjoy his own company while also having activities available if he wished.Your feedback means a great deal to us and will be shared with the whole team. I had respite care for 3 weeks during which I developed a chest infection in one lung and a bladder infection. The care at Portobello Place was consistently good. However, the laundry service did have lapses. I lost several items of clothing which didn't get labelled. These weren't recovered. The optional
services for haircuts, manicures and chiropody were much appreciated.
Reply from Tim Woolford, Customer Relations Manager at Portobello PlaceThank you for taking the time to share your feedback following your recent respite stay with us . We're pleased to learn that you found the care consistently good and that you appreciated the optional services such as haircuts, manicures, and chiropody. It's wonderful to know these contributed positively to your stay.We are, however, very sorry to learn about the challenges you experienced with the laundry service and the loss of some of your clothing. While we advise respite (short stay) residents to tag their clothing, this is certainly not the standard we aim to uphold, and your concerns have been shared with our housekeeping team so we can review and improve our labelling and tracking procedures. Please accept our sincere apologies for the inconvenience caused. Your comments are invaluable in helping us improve the overall experience for all our residents. We hope you are now feeling better and recovering well from your recent illness, and we wish you continued good health.

I booked myself in for a lunch which I ate at a table in the bistro with three other residents. The bistro manager and service staff were polite, helpful and easy to talk with. It was Friday and the fish and chips and peas were delicious and beautifully cooked and presented, and the dessert, fruit pavlova,
was perfect. The table was laid with a cloth, napkins and flowers, and the whole place beautifully clean. Good conversation made this a perfect and unhurried lunch. Well done!

Great care home. My mum was here for 7 weeks respite care, and I was very impressed by the overall care provided. Firstly, the building - this is a very modern purpose-built home, well laid out with separate floors for residents depending on their needs (floor for residents with dementia; those who
are more independent; and less independent). This is very well thought through and works well. Secondly, the food - it's very good. Varied and interesting menu, and good quality. Thirdly, the staff - Portobello seems to be able to attract good staff, who make all the difference for residents. Lastly, management - they are on-site, available, responsive, hands-on, and seem to be on top of things. Would also just mention the security - codes to enter, and when visiting my Mum late evening, I would get challenged by staff before they got to know me, which is a good sign in my view. Very good experience overall and would highly recommend.

Current Review Score: 9.8 (9.846)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.8 (9.846) out of 10 for Portobello Place is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.9 out of 5 from 19 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 19 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.871 for Portobello Place is calculated as follows: ( (199 Excellents x 5) + (21 Goods x 4) + (4 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 224 Ratings = 4.871
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.975 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Portobello Place is based on 19 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 3.975
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 61 registered maximum number of service users is 12.2, which has been reached with 19 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Job Title: General Manager Joined: 2024

My name is Cindy Alland. I have worked in the Older Care industry for approaching 40 years and, in that time, have held numerous roles and faced just about every challenge there is!

Starting at ‘Grass roots’ I worked my way up from Carer, Senior, Head of Residential, Home Manager, Regional Business operations and then became an independent Interim manager and trouble shooter. I have managed care homes in multiple counties across England consisting of Residential, Dementia, Nursing and Sheltered/Assisted living – from small 26 bed homes to upwards of 90 beds.

I have also had overlapping spells of property development along the way and, most recently, my husband and I have moved into the house we have been building for the last few years.

I love to travel, spend time with my family, and am a keen gardener.

My work ‘passion’ though, is making a positive difference. I strive to empower those I work with to be the best they can, to create an environment that residents can feel supported and loved and staff can feel proud and valued.

I treat everyone with respect, as I would want to be treated. My door is always open. I want staff, residents and their families to know I am there for them. Well led staff create the best outcome for all. Enrichment of the lives of our residents and team is what I work towards. Person centred care, empathy and compassion are my focus to deliver the best I can.
