Mum stayed at Portobello Place for respite last year and we loved the care and attention she received.

She has now moved in permanently and even after 24 hours has settled in extremely well. It feels like coming home! The management, administration and all the staff have been so helpful and attentive to our needs.

My mum has been very happy for the whole time she has been at the care home. The staff always go that extra mile and are very attentive and caring. The activities on a regular basis are well arranged and inclusive. All of the activities that are organised for special events are brilliant. The rooms are comfortable and well furnished. My mum has everything she needs in her room. It is safe, clean, well managed and a nice place for all.

This care home is very good. The staff are, in the main, very friendly but I did not like today being told to pull my mask up when sitting in my wife's room. I was told sharply and it is not required when in a client's bedroom.
With the one exception, the staff are very good although some of the English has a lot to be perfected. This confuses my wife. The alarm bells are a problem. It takes ages for the staff to turn them off.

Why do I often find my wife's fruit bowl empty? I was told it would be refilled every day.

I find the staff extremely helpful, courteous and kind. They care for the residents impeccably and as a result, my mother-in-law has improved in both her medical and mental wellbeing. There is ample opportunity to take part in many activities and enjoys the friendly atmosphere. She is extremely happy here. Guests are always made to feel welcome and it is the best decision we've ever made to move her here. My mother-in-law very much likes the food on offer and always looks forward to meal times.

Visited my mother at lunchtime. Arrived at 12.05 and was invited up to the bistro to await my mother's arrival. Upon her arrival, we proceeded to a table to be served lunch. The lunch was excellent with a varied choice of meals, and the staff were very considerate and helpful. Made the visit to my mother an enjoyable experience.

We have been so impressed with all the staff members who genuinely care with compassion and tenderness. The customer liaison manager helped us greatly with all the details and emotions factored around moving my mother into full-time residential care. We are so happy with Portabello Place. Mum moved in a few months ago and received such a caring welcome and the staff went out of their way to make sure she had what suited her as an individual - helping us to choose the right room, the right furniture, timing of her arrival etc. Despite Covid restrictions we as a family were made as welcome as restrictions would allow. This week we were delighted that the home laid on a birthday tea for dad when he visited - 'its not just about the resident, it is about care for the whole family' they said! Thank you so much!

Overall Experience

Our mum moved to Portobello Place in April 2021. She was apprehensive about the move, giving up independent living and adapting to a new way of life. Settling in was gradual and the team really helped with adjustment challenges. Mum has a great rapport with the staff, is very happy with how she is cared for and if there’s anything she doesn’t like she says so, and the team are unwaveringly respectful of her views.

In October after a major operation, she lost total confidence in the ability to walk and had a high level of dependency on the carers. The team at Portobello Place were absolutely brilliant. They tended to her physical recuperation but were just as focused on getting her ‘old self’ back. They were individually attentive and found lots of different ways to engage and support her. She has got back her spirit and determination thanks to their care and thoughtfulness.

The whole team at Portobello Place are fabulous, they operate as a team for the good of residents. Thank you!

My mother (89 years old) stayed at Portobello Place for 4 weeks for respite care following a hip replacement. She's a very independent lady and was nervous about being looked after. She was nicely surprised! All the staff cared for her in this wonderful place. She says that they treated her more like a "guest" and a "friend" than a "patient" or "resident". The food was five stars. Adventurous and varied (each of her 4 weeks had a different menu every day).

The facilities were great too. Her room, lovely lounges, social activities, hairdressing, transport to hospital for follow up appointments - everything. All this has given her a huge boost to her recovery. She had been through a horrible time last year with that hip. She felt pampered and valued.

Well done all of you at Portobello Place and thanks!

Mum has just spent two months at Portobello Place and received excellent respite care. The staff are outstanding and she had the best Christmas ever! The facilities, activities and food are second to none!

Portobello truly is a beautiful place and Mum was sad to leave her new friends (staff and residents) behind. I would thoroughly recommend this luxurious care home and I know where I'm going if I ever need looking after!

My Grandmother stayed at Portobello Place for 3 weeks of respite care and I cannot recommend it enough. All of the staff I met during her stay were wonderful - caring, respectful and very friendly. Nothing was too much trouble. All of the facilities are incredible, very modern and really well thought. My Grandmother’s room was lovely and overlooked the beautiful courtyard. My fiancé and I contacted Portobello Place when searching for suitable end-of-life care for my mum who sadly had acute myeloid leukaemia and Alzheimer's. From the initial inquiry call with them to the final days of my mum's life, the customer service and care standard given to my mum has been faultless. All of the team went over and above their jobs during a very stressful and sad time in our lives, showing warmth and compassion when helping to deliver the level of care we would have wanted to give our mum at home in the final few weeks of her life. We couldn't recommend Portobello Place highly enough for all of the support they have shown our family.

Portobello Place has been fantastic with the care of my Nan. She might not be the easiest resident but have been fantastic with her, and continue to help her through rehab and activities. My Nan enjoys the company of the other residents and continues to tell me how amazing the food is. Even through COVID, we were able to safely meet up with her outside, which has been lovely. Everyone one of the staff members are so friendly and can’t do enough for us and her. I can rest easy at night knowing my Nan is in the best care and enjoys being there. Thank you to all the staff at Portobello Place, really can’t thank you enough.

My mother spent a very comfortable four weeks residing at Portobello Place for some respite prior to an operation. Her initial worries and concerns soon dissipated after meeting all the kind, caring and concerned staff from the lovely ladies who cleaned her room through to the professional and discreet carers and the genuinely interested managers. Everyone treated her as an individual with her own specific requirements. She soon felt totally at home and although encouraged to join in with activities, she, unfortunately, didn't feel well for much of the time but was never pressured into anything, instead treated with care and understanding. She was fortunate to have a lovely room opening onto the courtyard where our family were able to visit her daily. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Portobello Place as a permanent home or for respite for your loved ones.

My father in law came to Portobello Place from hospital where he was recovering from a broken pelvis. He was quite confused and anxious in hospital, but was much better at Portobello Place and settled well.
He said himself that the carers looked after him really well and he had no complaints about the carers at all. I think for a relative that is the most important thing to hear.
He particularly enjoyed the exercise programme put together for him and he really liked the gym. I have no doubt this helped in his rehab and permitted him to return to his own apartment.
I think that in normal non-Covid times he would have really enjoyed all the activities. He did get a bit frustrated with the Covid safe visiting arrangements, but often mentioned the lovely garden and we had some good visits there.

Thank you Portobello Place for all you did for him and we will certainly recommend you.

Mum and Dad came from their own home for 3 weeks of respite care. Portobello Place were able to accommodate them at very short notice due to the original respite care home being unable to have them.
The care and attention they received was excellent and they soon settled into the routine. The staff really seemed to care about my parents and nothing seemed too much to ask. Although my visits were limited due to Covid restrictions, the weather was nice and we had some nice times outside in a courtyard area.

Since their great experience at Portobello, they have subsequently moved into one of their sister Berkley Care Group homes.

My name is Cindy Alland. I have worked in the Older Care industry for approaching 40 years and, in that time, have held numerous roles and faced just about every challenge there is!

Starting at ‘Grass roots’ I worked my way up from Carer, Senior, Head of Residential, Home Manager, Regional Business operations and then became an independent Interim manager and trouble shooter. I have managed care homes in multiple counties across England consisting of Residential, Dementia, Nursing and Sheltered/Assisted living – from small 26 bed homes to upwards of 90 beds.

I have also had overlapping spells of property development along the way and, most recently, my husband and I have moved into the house we have been building for the last few years.

I love to travel, spend time with my family, and am a keen gardener.

My work ‘passion’ though, is making a positive difference. I strive to empower those I work with to be the best they can, to create an environment that residents can feel supported and loved and staff can feel proud and valued.

I treat everyone with respect, as I would want to be treated. My door is always open. I want staff, residents and their families to know I am there for them.
