Portobello Place care home in Chartridge, just outside Chesham in Buckinghamshire, that opened in December 2019. It is a luxurious, purpose-built care home in an envious location, right in the heart of the Chilterns.

The care home is registered to care for 61 residents and aims to offer the highest standard of residential care when it opens its doors. With tasteful décor and luxurious furnishings throughout, a large bar and bistro area for residents to spend time with visiting friends and family, and the Bellingdon Bistro where cuisine of the finest quality is served, it’s easy to see why. Freshly cooked, nutritious food is served every day.

Run by Berkley Care Group, a small care group with a proven track record for high-quality care in the UK, Portobello Place is focused on caring for residents with dignity and respect, with wellbeing at the heart of it all.

This can only be a snapshot rather than a review as I have only spent three weeks here. On arrival I was immediately made to feel welcome, shown to my accommodation, the bistros, lounges and happy areas being picked out. There are plenty of helpful staff to guide if needed and I was given a copy of
the weekly calendar with all the daily activities. Between events, there is time to spend in the bistros where there is a supply of good quality food and drinks. Time is passing quickly and I am so pleased that I have become a member of Portabello.

Dad seems to have settled into life at Portobello Place remarkably quickly. My brother and I have both noticed a clear improvement in his well-being after only 3 weeks. He has been warmly welcomed into Portobello, as have we! A highlight of his first week was having Sunday lunch with all his close family.
The wonderful member of staff who looked after us so royally and we could see the absolute delight on Dad’s face to have us all there. We all loved the experience so thank you so much to the manager for arranging it. Big shout out to two other members of staff for a delicious lunch and Dad is clearly thriving from having fantastic home-cooked food, not to mention the odd alcoholic drink in the evening!

Great staff and support. Pleasant atmosphere, like a cruise ship, rather than a typical " care home" type. Relaxed feel and kindness. Staff seem to genuinely enjoy their work. Food looks ok and must be hard to cater for sensitive and restricted diets, but may benefit from more "comfort food" options
as well as international cuisine. Overall, an excellent experience.

Since my father has been staying at Portobello Place. I can see a great improvement in his health. We looked at a lot of homes and Portobello is one of the best. We are so glad Dad is able to stay here.
All the staff without exception are excellent. Food is very good and staff are very friendly.
My
only grumble is after, 5 pm it's difficult to get into the front door with a wait on occasion.

I chose Portobello Place as a potential place of convalescence for my 92-year-old mother following her month-long stay in hospital. My mother immediately decided she wished to become a permanent resident, and it’s easy to see why a decision I heartily endorsed and actioned on her behalf. At every stage
of my dealings with the home, I have been impressed with the very high standards of professionalism, care, the individuality of attention, as well as the environment and amenities. Not only has my mother appreciated the warmth of welcome and care as she makes this significant transition from independent living to residential life, but so have I. As her only daughter and living alone myself, I have nobody with whom to share the practical and emotional impacts of this significant change, and I too, have received empathetic and valuable guidance and personal support. This is one leap of literal faith neither of us shall regret. Thank you!

My mum had a lovely couple of weeks being cared for and made many new friends. The place is like a 5 star hotel so doesn’t feel like a care home at all. The staff are friendly and helpful and the rooms airy and comfortable.

Mum moved to Portobello Place a couple of months ago she has settled in well. The room and all facilities are lovely and the staff are welcoming and inclusive even to me when I visit Mum.
It is so lovely, me and the husband think we'll move in when we get too old to live at home.

Having had an operation, I arrived two days after my wife was admitted, being her carer I would not be able to attend to her needs. So I chose this delightful home. I had five weeks respite and the home looked after myself and my wife so well that on myself departing and because of my wife's condition
which was deteriorating. I made the decision to retain her in the home based on what I saw around me while I was being cared for.

Mum stayed at Portobello Place for respite last year and we loved the care and attention she received.
She has now moved in permanently and even after 24 hours has settled in extremely well. It feels like coming home! The management, administration and all the staff have been so helpful and attentive
to our needs.

My mum has been very happy for the whole time she has been at the care home. The staff always go that extra mile and are very attentive and caring. The activities on a regular basis are well arranged and inclusive. All of the activities that are organised for special events are brilliant. The rooms
are comfortable and well furnished. My mum has everything she needs in her room. It is safe, clean, well managed and a nice place for all.

This care home is very good. The staff are, in the main, very friendly but I did not like today being told to pull my mask up when sitting in my wife's room. I was told sharply and it is not required when in a client's bedroom.
With the one exception, the staff are very good although some of the English
has a lot to be perfected. This confuses my wife. The alarm bells are a problem. It takes ages for the staff to turn them off.
Why do I often find my wife's fruit bowl empty? I was told it would be refilled every day.

I find the staff extremely helpful, courteous and kind. They care for the residents impeccably and as a result, my mother-in-law has improved in both her medical and mental wellbeing. There is ample opportunity to take part in many activities and enjoys the friendly atmosphere. She is extremely happy
here. Guests are always made to feel welcome and it is the best decision we've ever made to move her here. My mother-in-law very much likes the food on offer and always looks forward to meal times.

Visited my mother at lunchtime. Arrived at 12.05 and was invited up to the bistro to await my mother's arrival. Upon her arrival, we proceeded to a table to be served lunch. We are so happy with Portabello Place. Mum moved in a few months ago and received such a caring welcome and the staff went out of their way to make sure she had what suited her as an individual - helping us to choose the right room, the right furniture, timing of her arrival etc. Despite Covid restrictions
we as a family were made as welcome as restrictions would allow. This week we were delighted that the home laid on a birthday tea for dad when he visited - 'its not just about the resident, it is about care for the whole family' they said! Thank you so much!

Our mum moved to Portobello Place in April 2021. She was apprehensive about the move, giving up independent living and adapting to a new way of life. Settling in was gradual and the team really helped with adjustment challenges. Mum has a great rapport with the staff, is very happy with how she is cared
for and if there’s anything she doesn’t like she says so, and the team are unwaveringly respectful of her views.


In October after a major operation, she lost total confidence in the ability to walk and had a high level of dependency on the carers. The team at Portobello Place were absolutely brilliant. They tended to her physical recuperation but were just as focused on getting her ‘old self’ back. They were individually attentive and found lots of different ways to engage and support her. She has got back her spirit and determination thanks to their care and thoughtfulness.


The whole team at Portobello Place are fabulous, they operate as a team for the good of residents. Thank you!

Cindy Alland

Job Title: General Manager Joined: 2024

My name is Cindy Alland. I have worked in the Older Care industry for approaching 40 years and, in that time, have held numerous roles and faced just about every challenge there is!


Starting at ‘Grass roots’ I worked my way up from Carer, Senior, Head of Residential, Home Manager, Regional Business operations and then became an independent Interim manager and trouble shooter. I have managed care homes in multiple counties across England consisting of Residential, Dementia, Nursing and Sheltered/Assisted living – from small 26 bed homes to upwards of 90 beds.


I have also had overlapping spells of property development along the way and, most recently, my husband and I have moved into the house we have been building for the last few years.


I love to travel, spend time with my family, and am a keen gardener.


My work ‘passion’ though, is making a positive difference. I strive to empower those I work with to be the best they can, to create an environment that residents can feel supported and loved and staff can feel proud and valued.


I treat everyone with respect, as I would want to be treated. My door is always open. I want staff, residents and their families to know I am there for them. Well led staff create the best outcome for all. Enrichment of the lives of our residents and team is what I work towards. Person centred care, empathy and compassion are my focus to deliver the best I can.

I am responsible for organising and delivering a diverse programme of events and activities tailored to our residents' individual interests and preference. These includes exercise classes, art sessions, games, outings and live entertainment from visiting musicians and performers. My team and I will always ensure our residents remain active, engaged and socially fulfilled.

Viktoria is an abstract artist from Ukraine, and she enjoys motivating and encouraging resident participation.
