Portobello Place care home in Chartridge, just outside Chesham in Buckinghamshire, that opened in December 2019. It is a luxurious, purpose-built care home in an envious location, right in the heart of the Chilterns.

The care home is registered to care for 61 residents and aims to offer the highest standard of residential care when it opens its doors. With tasteful décor and luxurious furnishings throughout, a large bar and bistro area for residents to spend time with visiting friends and family, and the Bellingdon Bistro where cuisine of the finest quality is served, it’s easy to see why. Freshly cooked, nutritious food is served every day.

Run by Berkley Care Group, a small care group with a proven track record for high-quality care in the UK, Portobello Place is focused on caring for residents with dignity and respect, with wellbeing at the heart of it all.

The group's skilled, trained staff working for the group are paid above the living wage. And with more staff than the norm, there’s always time for the smaller but just as significant aspects of care, such as having a chat.

It was lovely to visit my Father today 17th July 2020 at the beautiful Portobello Place. What a fantastic setup, with lovely individual patio areas for the residents to sit out and enjoy. Dad is being looked after by very caring staff who are doing a fantastic job, all who are lovely ladies/gents who
make time to update you on how dad is getting on. This is a great comfort to myself and my sisters and certainly takes away any stress from our busy lives.
All staff from administrators to carers do a fantastic job.
I would certainly recommend Portobello Place to any family looking for permanent or respite care.

When we first drove up, we thought what a beautiful home. The careers were very kind and lovely. We had booked a visit to see my mum in respite, and they looked after us very well. Would definitely recommend this home.

This is an excellent home, the staff are very caring and they spend valuable time with the residents, which is fantastic, as it can be daunting for the residents being away from there main home life. Well done team, keep up the great work.

My father moved into the home straight from hospital initially as respite care but has decided to stay. From the staff who took care of him while he was in isolation to another staff member who is always there when we have a socially distant visit, the staff have been warm, welcoming and caring. He
enjoys his art lessons and we look forward to sampling some of the delicious-sounding food when we can meet him inside.

I have been very impressed with the excellent accommodation and care my mother has received at Portobello Place especially given difficult conditions over the past three months. She has had her own small flat in sheltered housing for the past ten years but earlier this year it was clear that the responsibilities
of doing everything for herself was becoming too much at age 91. The welcome she has received at Portobello has been fantastic and the quality of care from the excellent staff has reassured me that moving to the home was the correct decision. The space and cleanliness of the accommodation are first class, her meals are varied, nutritional and always good quality. She enjoys all sorts of activities - games/exercises/just chatting with the other residents and, although due to the virus she can't leave the premises, she enjoys walking in the garden and sitting in the open air. I have no hesitation in recommending this care home where I know my mother is being expertly looked after.

My mother-in-law moved into Portobello Place at the beginning of the Government lockdown, in a respite capacity. It was a big decision for her and not taken lightly. We are all so impressed with the staff team, the management and the whole home. They have given the most fabulous care and support to
their residents whilst keeping us updated and informed all the time. We have been able to have web chats as often as we want, so my mum-in-law is still seeing us all. The restaurant standard food is amazing, and we get photos of what she is enjoying daily - so jealous! The activities that she has been enjoying are brilliant from daily exercise, cinema films, walks in the grounds, baking, carpet bowls, singing, even online art lessons.
I would like to say a huge thank you to Portobello Place for all you have done and continue to deliver. Mum-in-law has decided that she wants to become a permanent resident now, which I think speaks volumes from someone who is living there and receiving the care.

We have been delighted with the level of care, food, entertainment, and accommodation that Portobello Place offers. My mum went into Portobello place as respite care when her health deteriorated quickly in February. We were very concerned that she would be unhappy and desperate to come home at the earliest
possibility. She has surprised us all with how quickly she has settled and along with her health improving, she also seems happier than she has been in some time. COVID 19 has meant she has stayed longer than we first anticipated but my brother and I are comforted by how well she is getting on. The staff is warm, kind, and professional and she is well entertained all day. We believe it would be a very different picture for her quality of life to be back at home.
Worthy of separate mention is the amazing food! We were lucky enough to join Mum for a few meals pre-lockdown and now we get a daily update on what delicious meals she is having we are very envious.

Our elderly friend came into Portobello Place at the end of February for a short period of respite care. In mid-March, virus restrictions were introduced, so she has had to stay under the government's lockdown regulations.
We cannot praise the staff and facilities at Portobello Place highly enough.
Our friend has received excellent care from the wonderful, friendly staff, and we are confident that she has been in a safe, caring environment from the beginning, and this has continued during the recent crisis. Nothing is too much trouble.
Facilities at Portobello Place are second to none.
Accommodation in large luxurious rooms all with ensuite, in house facilities e.g. hairdressing salon, activity rooms, gym, private dining facilities for residents' use, lounges on each floor and a spacious bar bistro area in which to relax; giving the feel of a 5-star hotel with care - including outstanding restaurant standard food and even a small cinema.
A very happy atmosphere with always something of interest and to do.

Current Review Score: 9.8 (9.846)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.8 (9.846) out of 10 for Portobello Place is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.9 out of 5 from 19 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 19 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.871 for Portobello Place is calculated as follows: ( (199 Excellents x 5) + (21 Goods x 4) + (4 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 224 Ratings = 4.871
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.975 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Portobello Place is based on 19 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 3.975
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 61 registered maximum number of service users is 12.2, which has been reached with 19 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Job Title: General Manager Joined: 2024

My name is Cindy Alland. I have worked in the Older Care industry for approaching 40 years and, in that time, have held numerous roles and faced just about every challenge there is!

Starting at ‘Grass roots’ I worked my way up from Carer, Senior, Head of Residential, Home Manager, Regional Business operations and then became an independent Interim manager and trouble shooter. I have managed care homes in multiple counties across England consisting of Residential, Dementia, Nursing and Sheltered/Assisted living – from small 26 bed homes to upwards of 90 beds.

I have also had overlapping spells of property development along the way and, most recently, my husband and I have moved into the house we have been building for the last few years.

I love to travel, spend time with my family, and am a keen gardener.

My work ‘passion’ though, is making a positive difference. I strive to empower those I work with to be the best they can, to create an environment that residents can feel supported and loved and staff can feel proud and valued.

I treat everyone with respect, as I would want to be treated. My door is always open. I want staff, residents and their families to know I am there for them. Well led staff create the best outcome for all. Enrichment of the lives of our residents and team is what I work towards. Person centred care, empathy and compassion are my focus to deliver the best I can.
