The quality of care is better than Mum's last care home and probably better than average. The food is good, and the rooms are nice. They are doing well at remembering Mum's individual needs and spotting problems. However, the fees are very high. Apparently, some other care homes have even higher fees,
but at the time of writing, Woodthorpe's fees are an eye-watering £65,000 per year. This is higher than the combined salaries of my wife and I working full time. We thought about caring for Mum ourselves, but we would go insane.
The staff are friendly and helpful but over-worked. There are usually more staff on duty than the official minimum but there are times when no staff are visible, all occupied with residents in their rooms, leaving several other dementia residents on their own in the lounge. The big mystery is where all the money is going? Not enough is being spent to recruit and retain care staff.
Reply from Terri Kidd, PR Executive at Woodthorpe LodgeThank you for your feedback. Please be assured our fees, salaries and wages are reviewed regularly to ensure that we are always as competitive as we can be in each area. All of our staff have access to our award-winning 'wellbeing pathway', which includes 24-hour counselling support line to help them in times of stress. If you wish to speak to someone about your experience, please contact the Home Manager at Woodthorpe Lodge, who would be happy to arrange a meeting with you. My wife received two weeks of respite care at Woodthorpe Lodge. She has advanced Parkinsons resulting in a severe loss of mobility at certain times, especially at night. She was assessed in advance and we were assured that the staff could manage her complex care needs. However, they fell way short leaving
her anxious and distressed. Incidents included: being left on the commode for ninety minutes, as no one was available to help her off; being left cold all night after falling asleep on top of the bed, a carer refused to help her into bed and no extra blanket was offered; being told by a carer that she was 'putting it on' as they had seen her walking earlier; night staff refusing to help her out of bed to use the toilet as it was 'against the law'; lack of basic equipment e.g. a rotunda which she relies on when mobility is low.

My husband and I visited this home May 18 with a view to my booking for 2 weeks while we had a new bathroom. The home was very clean and comfortably furnished, the bedroom nice with en suite facilities and in the downstairs room a door out onto a terrace. I was told I could eat in my room - I’m a Parkinson’s
sufferer and don’t like eating in public as I’m slow and messy.
The food was adequate though. I didn’t think there was much choice (for Sunday lunch it was roast pork with all the trimmings or nut roast and “all the trimmings“ - not much choice if you don’t like trimmings). A traditional meal was midday only and teatime was sandwiches, sometimes with an added option of pasta or something left over from another meal. There was always soup at teatime, not midday.
On the whole, daytime staff all worked hard and were kind and efficient. Many of the night staff were too but a number of them unwilling to assist me to the toilet at night, their attitude being that if I could manage in the day.

I came to Woodthorpe Lodge in July 2020 for three weeks to see if I liked it. I liked it from the start - why, everyone is so kind and friendly. The place itself is beautiful, clean and built with care and thought. The greatest asset is the carers, who are all kind and helpful. It is a place where we
can continue to learn, develop and find friends.

We are very pleased with the care my mother is receiving and the general attitude and helpfulness of the staff. A few things that could be improved: A welcome back/better information on arrival. Communication to the family is unclear, sketchy and slow - particularly around Covid arrangement - often
confusing. Visiting needs to be available outside working hours. Response to residents' requirements can be very slow (eg cup of tea). Staff seem to be overworked - are there enough?

I wouldn’t recommend this care home. The staff aren’t very friendly and my grandma lost a lot of weight when she was here. The carers would speak to residents quite harshly and sometimes even shout at them. Also, there isn’t much stimulation for the residents, which I think is really important for elderly
people. For all of these reasons, we have now moved my grandma into a new care home where she is loving it.

A lovely, modern and friendly care home. Staff are always smiling and chatty. Mum is happy, given all the restrictions that have been placed on care homes, but it will be lovely one day to return to normality. The staff work really hard, the food is super, according to Mum and she is very well looked
after.

Very tired carers, waited 40 minutes for someone to answer the bell. Wake you up at 9.30 to ask what you want for the next day's food.
No baths, had one last week, should have two a week. I'm not feeling happy. Food is not good. Nobody seems happy to go back to their room.

From the first time we walked into Woodthorpe Lodge, there was a great feeling of genuine welcome and warmth, which never alters. Everyone is helped and can always find time to spend with you when you need it. I am so happy my mum has settled in, she only went for two weeks respite and refused to leave.
The food is amazing, tasty with a wonderful variety of well-balanced food. Carry on the way you are and we will all be happy.

I had a very enjoyable 2-week stay at Woodthorpe Lodgemetting very nice residents. The staff were marvellous I cannot fault anyone at any time day or night. They all put 110% caring for the residents and who goes away for 2 weeks and gets their washing done for them? I can't think of anything nicer
except perhaps having my hair washed and set - Whoopee!!

Current Review Score: 9.2 (9.166)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.2 (9.166) out of 10 for Woodthorpe Lodge is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.2 out of 5 from 28 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 24 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.166 for Woodthorpe Lodge is calculated as follows: ( (157 Excellents x 5) + (117 Goods x 4) + (32 Satisfactorys x 3) + (8 Poors x 2) + (18 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 332 Ratings = 4.166
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Woodthorpe Lodge is based on 24 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 66 registered maximum number of service users is 13.2, which has been reached with 24 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
