Hazel End is located in the market town of Bishop's Stortford and provides friendly and comfortable residential and dementia care for up to 66 residents in single ensuite rooms. The home is located in a quiet residential area whilst being close to transport links and local amenities and attractions.

The dedicated care team gets to know each resident, working with them and their loved ones to create detailed care plans so that their needs are always met. Mum has been in Hazel End Care Home since May 2021, she has settled in well. She is a lady that loves company and getting involved in whatever is going on. She enjoys sitting in the reception area to watch the comings and goings of residents, staff and visitors and likes to chat to everyone. It’s lovely
hearing about her day and her growing friendships, especially with the manager. Visits to Mum had been in the Garden room or the library it was just the 2 of us, and while I had met some of the staff I didn’t feel I was getting to know them and seeing Mum interact with them. I do realise this was down to the restrictions of Covid and staffing issues, but this is being addressed by the manager and his team and I personally have seen that the changes are working. This weeks visit I found mum chatting with staff and she was so happy talking to us both. She enjoys playing scrabble, watching formula 1 and cooking, the staff are working hard to ensure that she continues to enjoy the things that she did in her own home.

Dad joined the community in January 2022. He didn’t want to move or to go into a ‘home’. When dad arrived at Hazel End Care Home, he thought he was in a hotel. The warm, welcoming reception area and his room with en-suite facilities gives this feel to the building. The facilities were an important reason
for choosing Hazel End. However, it’s the people who make Hazel End a truly special place. The new lifestyle managers have introduced so many activities for the residents that provide the mental stimulation that dementia sufferers need. Dad told us that ‘there’s lots to do here’. Again, activities are great but it’s the way they are run, with enthusiasm, care, encouragement and kindness that’s the best bit. I get regular updates on how dad is doing and I have witnessed those impromptu moments where a resident has needed a hug or a comforting word and carers provide this in abundance. I know Dad is getting great care. The recent relatives’ meeting helped to understand priorities and to give feedback.

During lockdown mum's dementia had progressed and we were not equipped to take care of her any longer. It was a heart-breaking and frightening decision to place Mum in full-time care. During the pandemic, it was impossible to conduct thorough tours of homes and we had to rely on this site, the CQC website
and each home’s website to see reviews, pictures/videos of the environment to make decisions. Hazel End was the stand out choice - their website and social media presence gave a real insight into life at the home as the team there are absolutely wonderful and Mum was made to feel very welcome. The facilities are so clean and homely. The team are well trained and versed in risk assessment and management. Their activities are exceptional, the nutrition is quality and the communication invaluable. We can't thank them enough for everything they did for Mum during her 4-month stay, they felt like extended family. In short, Hazel End sets the expected standard for other homes to be measured against.

The staff at Hazel End have worked hard to successfully settle my dad into their care. My dad had suffered considerable trauma over a short period and they have looked after both his physical and mental health, while caring for him while living with dementia. Hazel End is a lovely friendly community
with great entertainment and the residents are treated like family members. All the staff are lovely and helpful, nothing is too much bother.
My dad’s room is luxurious, he has an en-suite shower room with a patio door to the outside rear garden. He appreciates the large TV in his room and the staff are more than happy to find him programmes that he likes or set the football up on his iPad. As a keen gardener, Dad has been able to get out into the garden to tend the plants and remove weeds, ready for some summer bedding plants.
I am so grateful to the team at Hazel End, they’ve supported us as a family at a very difficult time.

My 98-year-old mother was transferred to Hazel End in July 2020 in the midst of the current pandemic. This move between care homes was unexpected but the management team at Hazel End completed the transition efficiently and with care and consideration despite the difficulties incurred by the government
guidelines and my mother’s current stage of Dementia. We have struggled with communication at times as my mother has sight and hearing impairment and unfortunately, there are often issues with good connection on Zoom and Skype. This often gives rise to frustration for my mother and family members who are unable to visit her under normal circumstances. We are very pleased to have personal contact with the Lifestyle coordinators and this does allow us to keep in close contact with my mother’s day to day activities and general well being which she appears to enjoy. We have regular updates from management and are regularly informed of any changes in her care plan.

Mum was the third resident at Hazel End and as such settling in, could have been awkward, however, this was not the case. The care provided by the staff
was first class and has remained of the highest level. one of the hardest things to do, is making the decision of where a loved one will spend their
final years.
I am pleased to say we could not have chosen more wisely. the facility itself is fantastic and only bettered by the staff that care for mum.

My father spent four weeks in Hazel End Care Home for respite care after spending a few weeks in the hospital. We cannot fault the care and support for my father and for us as a family from the management as well as the staff we came into contact with. He is now in his own home, a stronger person thanks
to his care. We would have no hesitation in recommending Hazel End Care Home to anyone, and certainly, if my father needed either more respite care or indeed a permanent stay in a care home, Hazel End would be our first choice.

Dad moved in for a couple of weeks at the start of COVID to keep him safe, no one knew that it would go on for so long. It has been a relief that he decided to stay at Hazel End permanently and I know that he is well looked after all the time - it has taken a great strain off of me as his main carer
during such a difficult year. I think the procedures for visitors is great and I can’t wait to be able to get back to normal and be able to spend time with Dad in a more normal situation - I know we will be welcomed in as soon as it is safe.

My family friend came to the home in March. It is with heartfelt thanks for the incredible help, care and kindness the whole team showed her. Especially during her end of life care, even in the most difficult of circumstances with the COVID pandemic, we were able to visit in a safe way to say goodbye.
The staff and management are outstanding. They really went above and beyond. It gave us great comfort to know she was comfortable and well cared for in her final days. I cannot recommend the home enough.

I have visited many care homes in my previous career as a hairdresser and beautician, Hazel End is one of the finest homes I have ever had the pleasure to visit, I volunteer occasionally and do residents nails etc. I am always made to feel very welcome, the management and staff are second to none,
so professional kind and caring, it's wonderful to see the ladies and gents who live there looking so happy and often enjoying activities and being entertained, even in these difficult times they have had socially distanced entertainment outside in their lovely garden.
The food always smells and looks delicious and the building is always cleaned to an excellent standard.
Sadly I no longer have my parents but if I did and they needed residential care this would be my first choice, I would highly recommend Hazel End to anyone looking for a home from home for their loved one.

We have limited access to the care home because of covid19, but what we have seen and experienced is very good. It's hard to fill in the options because of limitations.

I have regularly helped out with a number of things within the care home. Whilst I have not been in the home since March, I would not hesitate to recommend the home. During my normal work, I have stayed in many hotels both in this country and abroad. I have to say that the quality of the rooms, lounge
areas and other areas equals the hotels that I have visited and in some cases, the home is nicer. I have observed the staff interacting with the residents and have the feeling of a homely environment. There always seems to be activities going on with plenty of smiles and laughter. The staff seem to really care about the residents and it seems more than a job for them. Whilst I have never had a meal at the home there is always homemade cake on offer and if this is anything to go by the food will be excellent. Sadly, I always seem to just miss the lemon drizzle cake. In summary a beautiful building with caring staff and a jovial atmosphere.

My mum has settled into Hazel End very well. She is happy and well cared for. She has more dignity and independence than when she lived in her own home. All staff are friendly and kind and do their best to keep the residents entertained during these difficult times. Mum speaks very highly of everyone
and tells me she is well cared for and happy. The atmosphere feels like a family unit. I am so happy with the care she receives and would highly recommend Hazel End to everyone.

Having visited 6 care homes prior to finding the right home for my mother, I can honestly say Hazel End is the best care home I have visited. The facilities are excellent and the staff very welcoming and friendly. The manager maintains good communication and personal knowledge of my mother. The COVID-19
pandemic has made visiting a challenge but I feel satisfied that the necessary precautions are being taken to keep my mother safe.

Our mum moved into Hazel End after spending a few weeks in hospital to have some respite care. Mum settled in very quickly and was made to feel welcome by staff and residents alike. She said it was like staying in a hotel as the standard was so high! She particularly enjoyed the food and having her
hair done and nails painted. After a long period of illness and lockdown she really enjoyed the company of the carers and other residents. Mum is now well enough to live in her own home but if our situation changed again our family would not hesitate in using Hazel End again. The facilities are exceptional and the staff are friendly, caring and professional.

Job Title: Care Manager Joined: 2019

My Name is Claire Sparks and I am the Home Manager at Hazel End Care Home,


I have worked in care for 9 years starting off in the community and then coming to Hazel End just before we opened our doors.


Prior to working in care, I worked in the hospital as a domestic and one lady thanked me for supporting her and she sadly passed away. This really made me rethink and I was proud of myself for supporting her and had a sense of fulfilment for how grateful she was.


I started working at Hazel End as a Senior Carer, I progressed to Deputy Manager then Care Manager and now Home Manager. I have learnt so much working at Hazel End Care Home and progressed within the home. I'm proud to support our residents and make each day enjoyable living with us.

Kerry Jeffrey

Job Title: Team Leader Joined: 2021

My name is Kerry Jeffrey and I am a Team Leader at Hazel End Care Home.


I started working in the care sector 15 years ago after seeing the support my dad had from the nursing team before he passed away. I felt I wanted to give something back to the community and joined a local care team working in the community as a senior carer and then as an area lead. I then moved onto the local hospital working on the wards as an assistant but wanted to get back to the care side of things, so went back out into the community with a hospital at home team until Covid struck. I then applied to work at Hazel End Care Home as a senior carer. This was my first time in a care home, and I loved the close-knit teamwork that you get compared to being out on your own.


I have now been at Hazel End for 4 years and in that time, I have worked my way up to Deputy Manager. When taken over by Anchor I took on the role of Team Leader so I was able to support staff daily on the floor. I like the position I am in as it gives me the opportunity to be a role model for new starters.
