Despite a detailed pre-admission assessment, Upton Mill failed to provide the essential care and safety measures required to adequately care for my wife. During her stay, she was badly injured and did not receive the necessary medical treatment.
Following a fruitless, protracted complaints procedure the complaints were referred to the Local Government & Social Care Ombudsman (LGO) who now (after lengthy investigation) have just confirmed Upton Mill were at fault on several counts.
Subsequently, the Care Home have acknowledged “the distress and uncertainty for what the Ombudsman considers to be poor care, and on behalf of Upton Mill and Porthaven I wish to apologise" A nominal payment to acknowledge the injustice was made.
Upton Mill appears to have many good features but I would not recommend it for people with complex needs - e.g. Dementia.
Thank you for taking the time to share your experience of our home. We would be remiss to say anything other than how sorry we are that we did not deliver on our own exacting quality standards and that your experience did not reflect that of our other residents and relatives. Concerns are always...
My parents-in-law moved into Upton MIll in June 2021 and they quickly settled in and enjoyed the care and help they were receiving. We are very impressed with the kindness, efficiency and "niceness" of the staff at Upton Mill. When she moved in, my mother-in-law commented that she was impressed that she was treated as a person and not just a "patient". That, I think sums up the attitude of the staff and management. We are kept informed, very promptly, of any problems that they encounter - be it supplies of toiletries or health problems. My mother-in-law has been diagnosed with vascular dementia and had to be moved from the ground floor (for residential needs) up to the first floor (for advanced nursing needs). We were consulted about the necessity for the change and involved in informing her about the move, which was done efficiently and carefully. The facilities are excellent and everything is spotlessly clean. The food is great and in almost constant supply.
Thank you so much for taking the time to review our home. It is an absolute pleasure caring for your parents-in-law here at Upton Mill and I am so glad you are able to share such a comprehensive review of life here. Thank you again.
My Mum moved to Upton Mill Care Home nine months ago and from the outset, my sister and I have been extremely impressed with the quality of care provided. The staff are always welcoming, helpful, caring and professional. No task seems to be too much to ask. I am regularly contacted to ask if I have any concerns about my Mum. Any queries I make are answered quickly. On the few occasions my Mum has been unwell, the nursing staff have been happy to discuss her condition and have provided exemplary nursing care. Having eaten in the dining room, I can say from first-hand experience that the food is delicious. My Mum's room is always spotless and she has enjoyed personalising it. She has been encouraged to be as independent as she would like to be and has enjoyed joining in activities that interest her. Upton Mill looks wonderful but the most important thing is that it really feels like a home and I am confident that my Mum is happy and well looked after.
Thank you so much for your review of our home. I will share your comments with the team. Thank you again for choosing Upton Mill.
A very caring “four-star hotel quality” home. New, custom-built home so standards inside the building are excellent. Always quite a bit going on. But they are also being very careful with respect to Covid. Cannot fault their professionalism. Sometimes staffing levels are a bit low but the staffing challenges are huge, especially around Christmas/New Year with Covid challenges on top. Fees are a little on the high side for similar homes but you get what you pay for. No hesitation in recommending.
Thank you for your review of our home and for sharing your experience.
My Dad has been at Upton Mill for almost 4 months. Both he and I are extremely happy with the level of care and attention he receives. Staff are capable, caring and patient and have time to do their jobs. They are friendly and show initiative. Every effort is made to understand my Dad’s wishes and idiosyncrasies and to make his life as happy as possible. Nothing is too much trouble. I am kept well-informed about his wellbeing and any query is answered promptly and in detail. My Dad says “The staff try very hard” and “The facilities are very good here”. He also looks forward to the meals which are excellent. There are activities, but my Dad is not coerced to go to things that don’t interest him. I notice that his room is always clean, as are his clothes and shoes, and that there is always a drink within easy reach. It gives me peace of mind to know that my Dad is receiving the best possible care in his old age.
Thank you so much for your wonderful review of our home. We are very proud of the service that we offer and I am glad that both you and your father chose Upton Mill as his home. It is a pleasure to support him here and I will share your comments with the team. Thank you.
Myself and my sister are utterly delighted with the care Mum receives at Upton Mill. Mum's care is tailored specifically to her needs and we are frequently given updates and included in discussions about what Mum would like best. Mum is always so happy to be at Upton Mill and the atmosphere couldn't be better. The whole team are excellent. Mum really enjoys the food and her room is lovely. Thank you so much.
Thank you so much for taking the time to provide such a glowing review of our home and service. It is wonderful to get amazing feedback like this and I will share this with the team. It is an absolute pleasure to care for your mother at Upton Mill.
I arrived at Upton Mill from hospital to stay for six weeks of respite care. Since my arrival, the staff have been consistently attentive, friendly and caring. As a result, I am feeling considerably better in myself and have decided to become a permanent resident. I have had lots of friends and family visit me since I arrived and all have commented on the standard of accommodation and the friendly staff. I look forward to becoming an active resident in our little community here in Tetbury.
Thank you so much for your wonderful review of our home. I am so glad that we were able to support you following your discharge from hospital and even more delighted that you have decided to make Upton Mill your new home.
I moved into Upton Mill Care Home in March on a cold and windy day. I was feeling excited because I had already made one visit to this warm and welcoming place and knew that there would be friends looking out for me. I was greatly shocked when I saw how many bags and boxes had arrived, while I was having lunch. Within 15-minute, everyone joined in to help, and soon I could relax in my warm and comfortable room, which was to be my next home.
Thank you for your wonderful review of our home. The team are more than happy to help people settle and I am glad that helped you settle with us at Upton Mill.
My mum moved to Upton Mill last October and is extremely content in her surroundings. Her ground floor room overlooks a beautifully designed communal outdoor area, and all of the indoor communal areas are stylish yet comfortable. The care she receives is excellent, the staff kind, caring, fun and good company. A variety of activities are on offer (to opt-in or opt-out of), and the food is apparently delicious! I have been very impressed with my dealings with the staff, and I would not hesitate and recommend Upton Mill as an excellent care provider.
Thank you for taking the time to complete such a glowing review of our home. I will ensure the whole team get to see your kind comments, thank you so much.
This is very good in every way if the person needs this high degree of care or just enjoys it. The staff are very kind. The food is very good too.
Thank you so much for your review of our home and your very kind comments. I will make sure the team sees your feedback.
Excellent.
Thank you for taking the time to provide such a glowing review for our home.
My wife and I stayed at Upton Mill, Tetbury for two weeks, following her minor stroke. Because of our ages, we had been locked down since March. For a new home, only open recently, the staff were well trained and the Covid precautions well applied. We were very comfortable and made welcome. The premises were immaculate and not institutional in any way. The facilities were excellent, the menus varied and the food good. We were very happy with our stay at Upton Mill.
Thank you for taking the time to review our home. I will share your comments with the team and we hope to see you at one of our events in the not too distant future.
All staff are excellent without exception, in all departments. Surroundings are delightful. Immediate response to any help needed by merely pressing a bell. Any very minor difficulties dealt with straight away.
It was an absolute pleasure having you stay with us, we look forward to inviting you back to visit us when we can.
Respite care for my parents was arranged very quickly following my mother’s discharge from the hospital having had a stroke. It enabled us to arrange to have care in place for when they could return home. The staff were extremely helpful and friendly. The home is delightful with excellent facilities. It was very reassuring knowing that they were in such good hands and being well cared for. A big thank you to everyone who took care of them!
Thank you so much for your review of Upton Mill. It was a pleasure to look after your parents, so glad we could help.
Despite COVID, the staff at this new home have worked very hard to make the move as easy as possible for my Mum and us!
Thank you so much for taking the time to review our home, we are very proud of how the team are working in very difficult circumstances and are so pleased to have your mother with us.
Upton Mill is beautifully presented, comfortable and very welcoming. We would highly recommend it to anyone considering a move into a residential/dementia care home.
Thank you so much for your wonderful review of Upton Mill.

Meet the Team (9)

Hello, my name is Alyson, and I am the Home Manager here at Upton Mill.
I have worked in the care sector since 1981 in various settings that have given me extensive experience in nursing, residential, hospital and day services.
I have been a manager for just over 26 years and previously successfully commissioned a home in Bristol. I have also supported other care homes through local authority visits and Care Quality Commission inspections.
I love doing what I do each day and am committed to providing a high-quality service for our residents and their loved ones. The reputation of our home is incredibly important to me.
Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my partner and my very active Labrador. I have two children and three young grandchildren, making me a rather young and hip nanny!

Hello, my name is Kym Wagstaff, and I am the Deputy Manager here at Upton Mill.
I hold a dual qualification as an RGN and paramedic, and I have worked in both the NHS and private sectors for over 30 years. I am passionate about supporting senior individuals in living life to the fullest in a caring and high-quality environment that caters for their needs. I have worked at Upton Mill for just over three years, and when I walk through our home's front doors I feel that I am walking into the home of 64 individuals.
I care about our team and thoroughly enjoy working with them to unlock their full potential so that they can grow and learn in an environment that supports the six C's of care: care, compassion, competence, communication, courage and commitment.

Hello, my name is Kirstie, and I am the Non-Clinical Deputy Manager here at Upton Mill.
I have worked in senior care homes since I was 18 years old, when my own great-grandmother was due to be admitted to a care home. Starting as a care assistant, I have worked in various roles, including administrator, home trainer and unit lead. I have worked across the private sector as well as working for a charitable trust, and the variety of experience I have gained in my different roles has been invaluable to me in my career. I was lucky enough to be promoted to my current role in April 2024.
I am passionate about staff progression and ensuring our residents have the highest standards of care and are empowered to be able to express their choices, goals and wishes so they may live their lives how they wish. I have always enjoyed working with senior individuals and could not imagine working in any other sector.
I live with my partner, two children, two dogs, two cats and our guinea pig! In my spare time, I love to read, go out with my children and spend time with family and friends.

Hello, my name is Correna, and I am the Client Services Manager here at Upton Mill Care Home.
I have worked in care for 40 years now and qualified as a nurse in 1991, working in orthopaedic trauma until I left in 2006. Since then I have worked in various areas of care from working for Stryker as a Clinical Support Specialist to working in private healthcare overseeing the private patient’s surgical pathway. I have also worked as a care manager in the community setting up live-in care packages and overseeing their ongoing management.
I am passionate about providing the best service for both residents and families, and my aim is to support them through the process, from initial enquiry to assisting with a stress-free transition into our home. Building good relationships has always been extremely important to me.
I live in South Gloucestershire with my husband and two miniature dachshunds. I have three children and three grandchildren whom I absolutely adore, and I love spending my spare time with family and traveling to new places.

Hello, my name is Charlie, and I am the Activities and Wellbeing Coordinator here at Upton Mill.
In my role, I put every resident at the heart of what I do by organising and overseeing a range of daily activities as well as individual personalised moments. It is a privilege to be able to spend time with our residents, to put smiles on their faces and have fun with them. I view each of our residents as a member of my extended family and take pride in getting to know every resident personally, ensuring there is always something for them to do that suits their interests.
To further my knowledge, I am currently undertaking a Level 3 apprenticeship with the hopes of furthering my skills to the benefit of our residents.
In my spare time, I enjoy socialising with my family and friends, watching movies and reality television.

Hello, my name is Sarah, and I am the Head Chef here at Upton Mill.
I have over 20 years of experience creating delicious, nutritious meals in schools, care settings and community projects. Having run a Community Interest Company for ten years, I understand the power of food to bring people together and brighten someone's day.
I am passionate about making food that feels like home. Working at Upton Mill, I am dedicated to serving dishes that are not only tasty but also tailored to each resident's needs, ensuring every meal is prepared with care, comfort and a personal touch.
I am an avid England Ladies' rugby fan and a season ticket holder for Gloucester Hartpury. In my spare time, I attend as many matches as possible. I also love spending time with my family.

Hello, my name is Liz, and I am the Clinical Specialist Nurse here at Upton Mill.
I have been a qualified nurse for the majority of my career, working in various settings and roles, including district nursing, commissioning work and legal work. The main passion running through all these positions is person-centred care, which is why I was attracted to Upton Mill, as they provide individualised care for all of their residents.
In my spare time, I love to travel with my husband. I do a lot of physical activity, which includes yoga, visiting the gym and trekking. I am also a practising clinical hypnotherapist.

Hello, my name is Issie, and I am the Home Administrator here at Upton Mill.
My role is to ensure the smooth operation of our home's administrative and financial systems, enabling our care team to focus on delivering high-quality care. With over 5 years of experience in finance, administration, and customer-facing roles, I take pride in being organised, approachable, and supportive.
In my spare time, I love to walk my beloved Jack Russell and, when I can, enjoy the beach, especially abroad.

Hello, my name is Brenda, and I am the Head Housekeeper here at Upton Mill.
I moved to Tetbury ten years ago and joined Upton Mill in 2020. After a year, I was proud to be promoted to the role of Head Housekeeper. I truly value this position, as it allows me to work alongside an incredible team and contribute to creating a warm, welcoming environment for everybody.
Outside of work, I am very family-oriented and love spending my time with family and friends, enjoying day trips and travelling whenever I can.
