Overall Experience

Sunrise of Winchester is undoubtedly a very superior care home. The furnishings, decor and facilities are excellent. There is a very pleasant restaurant where the staff are helpful in providing assistance to residents that need help or advice and the food is of a good standard. There is also a Bistro which provides facilities for residents to obtain hot drinks and light refreshments throughout the day.

The care staff are most caring at all levels and they take an interest in the residents by providing 24-hour care to ensure the comfort of the residents and provide administration of drugs and other needs.

There are many daily activities laid on for the enjoyment of residents and shopping trips and visits to places of interest are also provided.

I thoroughly recommend this care home to any would-be residents.

My mother has received excellent and sensitive care over the 2 years+ she has been a resident. She has not been the easiest person to look after, and I would rate the kindness and understanding of the staff as excellent.

My only 'beef' is that the cost, at well over twice the national average, is prohibitive! (according to a leading newspaper's statement of national average fees). I would only recommend Sunrise to someone whose monthly income was able to cover the cost of the care!

Of all the care homes I looked at for my father Sunrise was different. It does not feel like a care home, it feels more like a hotel and the care is given in a subtle way. There is a range of care packages depending on the needs of the resident. All the staff have a 'can do' attitude and treat the residents with respect and dignity. There is a range of activities which residents can join in with. The building is modern and purpose built with good quality furniture, carpets, a library, activities room and an informal meeting area where you can meet residents. The quality and variety of food is good. It is a place where all your worries are taken away from you - this, of course, comes with a cost and in comparison to other care homes it is on the expensive side. The strapline for the home is "assisted living" and I do think that is what it provides.

I am extremely grateful for the support and care given to my husband. We both benefit from the help of the carers and staff. I take comfort that my husband is cared for 24 hours a day - especially at night when I am not there.

My mother first stayed at Sunrise Winchester for 30 days' respite care to help her recover from anxiety she was experiencing due to being isolated at home. She settled in very well with the help and support of the excellent staff and soon began to thrive.

We made the decision for her stay to become permanent as she enjoyed the
community and activities, things that she was missing at home. Being 93 means she
does not have many surviving friends and Sunrise's community has helped her make

new friends.

She has her own furniture in her room which is so homely and she is supported very well

whilst retaining her independence. She is now free from the responsibility of looking after herself and her home.

Visited to celebrate a resident's birthday and was immediately welcomed in a warm, helpful manner. The event was beautifully arranged and run by the ever-caring personnel. I was particularly impressed when a number of VIPs attended and they were properly and individually announced by one of the Managers. This was done in a thoughtful, unobtrusive way since it would have been easy to spoil the family atmosphere which continued until the event ended.

Staff are caring and genuinely want the best for residents. More real understanding of how to treat dementia in early stages might be worth looking into. Overall, I'm happy with the home but for the amount we pay (£1200 per week) I feel we should get more than we are.

My grandmother had severe depression following the death of her husband of 59 years. Combined with a number of other age related ailments, she was not coping, and her needs were making my parents' lives very difficult. After spending three days in hospital, she reluctantly agreed to have 30 days respite care at Sunrise. Within days, she had visibly improved, and after a couple of weeks she is now back to her previous self, and still improving every day, and enjoying life again. The cost of her stay at Sunrise was money well spent.

I have lived at Sunrise for six weeks since January. I was here for a trial month in April 2016.
Sunrise is exactly what I wanted for my retirement. A five-star hotel with additional care. The only odd thing is that all the hotel residents are 85+
The room (suites) are generous in size and it is helpful to be asked to bring one's own furniture and possessions.

Food is within the limits of institutional food, good that there are plenty of activities and there is a genuine air of welcomeness among staff and other residents.

I was comforted by the knowledge that Mum received the highest standard of care for over 3 years in Sunrise of Winchester. She was part a special community where she was very much an individual. The staff are well managed by a strong and caring management team. A care home is a very dynamic environment and to produce a community like Winchester Sunrise is quite remarkable. I was a frequent visitor and witnessed many different situations. I was very impressed by how many of these were handled by real people who care. I was made welcome at any time of day or night and as a relative made to feel part of the community, being involved with staff and other residents who became friends. I am very proud of what Winchester Sunrise did for my family and that with Sunrise, My Mum ended her days in a very caring, comfortable and safe community.

This is what Mum deserved.

The environment is very good - well designed and clean.
The room is comfortable, good en suite facilities.
There is a varied schedule of activities and outings in the minibus.
The food can be variable.
The staff are generally good and friendly.
The restaurant service can be slow at times.

I have been a resident for a year now and often staffing can be lower than desired and a call may take a while to be answered but on the whole, I feel it met my needs very well for the time I have been here.

My mother came into Sunrise of Winchester as a near emergency having had "the cough" over Christmas and becoming very frail and rather depressed. The admission process was excellent and we met all the relevant staff. Everyone was charming and caring.
We have however one or two issues. The separate bodies (eg nursing and care) did not seem to communicate with each other ie a request for paracetamol took all day. My mum was unable to find a shelf for toiletries or a designated towel rail in the shared bathroom.

Socially, however, excellent.

The care staff are excellent and engage very well with residents - always upbeat and efficient. Management have listened to residents and relatives regarding the catering standards and in the process of executing improvements (a trifle overdue!!!). Whilst the garden is well used, some colour and seasonal planting of bulbs and hanging baskets would immensely improve the garden and in particular, rear pathways where rooms overlook blank walls.

Sunrise have treated my nan with nothing but dignity and respect and she loves the well thought out activity schedule. She loves the food and even though due to her dietary requirements this has to be blended it's still presented in a beautiful manner and she feels like she is eating the same as her fellow residents.

My father has Parkinsons. We briefed Sunrise and had a lengthy home visit by the care team agreeing to a 30 day trial period prior to becoming a permanent resident. We were told he would have to share a bathroom for a few weeks and were given a scale of costs but nothing concrete. As we arrived, an email came through saying the cost of care had been calculated and was almost double the amount predicted. By this stage, it was too late to turn around. From the start, it was apparent the care team had no knowledge of the discussions with the sales team and no knowledge of everything agreed at the home visit.

At the end of the 30 days, we were called in and asked it we had ordered a taxi for him or if they should.

I think Sunrise is suited to residents wanting a hotel like facility with the reassurance of care on call. It was not suitable for my father who had nursing needs and Parkinson's but still wanted mental stimulation and an element of individual thought and choice.
