I can only state from my experience of Avondale and its Management, staff, at all levels, that the service received is second to none.

Avondale has an excellent group of people from catering, kitchen staff, cleaners, maintenance, activities, careers and nurses. Not to forget the friendly reception

and administration personnel.

Services such as hairdressing, doctors, chiropodist and opticians are all available as necessary.
My Mother continues to be cared for with dignity, sympathy, patience and respect. She has now resided at Avondale for well over one year and I am able to visit whenever I wish, a home from home for me and my Mother. This gives me great peace of mind knowing she is in such a caring home and caring environment.

My father has had a very traumatic year both physically and mentally, due to his growing dependency and complex mental health needs. My brother and I have in the past searched for a care home that could meet my fathers needs and have until Avondale not succeeded.

In an ideal world dad wouldn't need

this care but he does. The care is given with insight into who dad was and is, evidence based, dad has settled in and it feels as though he can relax a little. The staff ask about dads background, family's opinion and keep us informed about dad's needs, and use this information to keep an up to date care plan. Dad has settled in with little trauma!

My father was well cared for at Avondale, he was treated with the greatest respect and dignity. The staff were all excellent and cared for the family as well, especially when dad passed away. Avondale was dad's home and we were able to treat it as though it was.

As a family, we couldn't be happier that our mum is looked after at Avondale. We visit at various times and days and always find her well cared for and happy. It gives us a great peace of mind knowing she has all she needs and that the carers are so lovely to her and all the other residents. We have
a very open and honest relationship with the nurses/carers and feel we can discuss anything that may be needed regarding our mums best interests.

Porthaven has provided outstanding care for my mother for four years. There is an excellent culture in the home that always puts the residents first. Staff demonstrate a level of care and interest in each individual resident that is truly amazing. I cannot praise Avondale highly enough.

In my opinion the care in Avondale is extremely good. I know I have dined at 5 star restaurants all over Great Britain and the food here is excellent and very varied. Nothing is any trouble and staff (care and nursing) go to great lengths to see that those being cared for enjoy a wide variety of food
and drink. I would obviously prefer to be at home and I do hope after my hip operation to be able to go home when I have recovered. Many thanks to all concerned .

My father had to go into hospital, in which time he was very scared. On his return to Avondale, the staff on the Blue Wing were helpful and loving to my father. His face on his return was full of smiles. He was so happy to be back and with the loving staff that surrounded him.

Until March of last year my dear husband had been a resident of Avondale care home in Aylesbury for two years. In all that time he was treated in a very caring and compassionate manner. I would 100% recommend Avondale to anyone looking for true friendly and efficient care. When he sadly passed away
they were very kind and caring to me at a very sad time, management and the individual carers.

My Mum has been on the nursing wing at Avondale since Feb 2015. Her care has been outstanding from everyone there. Nothing is too much trouble. Everyone is so positive and helpful to Mum. Her improvement since she has been at Avondale, both physically and mentally is incredible. I cannot recommend
the home more highly.

The staff are always friendly whenever we visit and give us a full briefing on my cousin's state of mind and physical condition. The care home never smells bad and is maintained in a excellent, clean condition. The en-suite room facilities are extensive and the addition of some personal effects and
furniture makes the whole transition from home to care home very easy. Regular activities have kept her mind active and although dementia is taking it's toll, the encouragement and interest shown by the staff makes her life as enjoyable as it can be. We have been most impressed.

This month the manager of the dementia unit had to have a difficult talk with us, verifying my fathers journey in this life may be coming to an end. She handled the conversation with dignity and respect for my father and for us the family, and for them the service providers. The home bases its care
on dignity and respect for the residents even the difficult ones as my father has been at times I could not be more impressed.

My father moved into Avondale in February 2015 after an unsuccessful period in another home and then a month in hospital. Due to dads complex dementia needs, it was very difficult to find a home that a) could meet dads needs and b) would take dad. Avondale were fantastic, they showed complete confidence
in caring for dad which, in subsequent months since he moved in they have done in a very professional manner. The care dad receives is absolutely fantastic, he is happy, relaxed and calm, challenging behaviours have since disappeared. Avondale is the perfect home for dad, as a family we couldn't be happier.

Avondale care home is Aylesbury accepted my mother last December 2014 from a care home that had failed to care for my mother and her worsening dementia, even the GP had it wrong. Since joining my mum has gone from strength to strength in her world of dementia, she has discovered her new personality,
enjoys life, laughs all the time, eats and drinks, and sleeps well without anxiety or worry. My daughter recently arrived to find her in the garden with her sunny's and hat on with a glass of red wine after lunch. Surrounded by residents and a nurse holding her hand and told my daughter she was thoroughly enjoying her holiday!!

Even when I was visiting care homes in the area Avondale Care Home stood out as being calm and efficient without being starchy. From the start my father was treated with dignity and respect and all the staff from carers to management were caring, patient and approachable. They always kept me informed
and undertook my wishes whenever possible. They accepted my fathers idiosyncrasies as part of his personality and accommodated his foibles whenever they could. It is sad that due to his condition he was not able to fully appreciate his surroundings and care in the last few months.

I have experience of a few homes because I have had 3 close relatives who lived in various ones. Avondale at Aylesbury is the best one I have ever been in on every level. The management are passionate about striving to improve quality of life for those with dementia (& others) and their high standards
filter down to all of the staff. People are treated with dignity and respect and every effort is made to stimulate them. There is an excellent activities team who constantly try and think of interesting things that people can do, according to their ability. It is a positive, vibrant place. The decor is beautiful and also homely, not institutional. No one wants to have to live in a care home but if your health means that you must then this is the place to be.

We initially contacted Porthaven in Aylesbury when we had been let down by my mother's existing care providers and were therefore in urgent need of respite care. Both the Manager and the Assistant Manager responded in an extremely helpful and efficient way and were able to help us out by providing
a safe and professional environment for my Mother at very short notice, at what was a very stressful time.
We were initially concerned as to how my Mother would settle into a care home environment after being looked after at home and also because she has some reasonably complex care needs. However she seemed very relaxed from the start. The staff were so caring, patient, helpful and experienced that they seemed to take her care all in their stride and she settled very quickly. The staff seemed to be of a very high calibre and seemed a happy and motivated team. My brothers and I always felt very welcome when we visited. The Care home itself is a very welcoming and homely environment and the standards of cleanliness are to be applauded. The food was also of a very good standard. Being on the ground floor it was also nice that my Mother had access to the lovely gardens and her ensuite room was sunny and comfortable.
Overall, we were very impressed with this Care Home and feel that we very lucky to have found it.

Finding a care home for a loved one is extremely difficult. From my very first visit I was made to feel that the carers at Avondale really did care. On arrival my mum was frightened and withdrawn. Very quickly she was made to feel safe and secure and has been very happy since. She has been at Avondale
for well over a year now. I can visit whenever I like and often find the carers sitting with mum, often singing or dancing, making her laugh. She has dementia and finds it hard to communicate, but they tend to her every need.

Current Review Score: 9.9 (9.944)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.9 (9.944) out of 10 for Avondale Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.9 out of 5 from 32 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 32 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.944 for Avondale Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (355 Excellents x 5) + (19 Goods x 4) + (1 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 375 Ratings = 4.944
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Avondale Care Home is based on 32 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 90 registered maximum number of service users is 18, which has been reached with 32 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
