Dad had a good Christmas at Elm Bank and settled into the New Year. We have attended family meetings and all heads of departments were in attendance and answered relevant questions satisfactorily. The current home manager is introducing more measures to include residents e.g. residents of the day and
we are receiving emails detailing weekly events and activities for residents and their families. We feel more positive about the future of the home and hope the home manager continues in this positive way.
Reply from Marvellous Bindura, General Manager at Barchester Elm Bank Care HomeThank you for your lovely review, we are glad to hear that Dad has settled in well with us. We are always looking at ways to improve our standards for the residents.

My uncle has settled well and made lots of friends. He thoroughly enjoys the activities, especially carpet bowls and racing. He is well cared for and is looking forward to the spring when he can explore the garden more and take part in the gardening club. Staff are wonderful, very professional and friendly
as well as being very helpful.

I was warmly welcomed as always, by the receptionist who was helpful in reminding me to sign in and sign out. The reception area had a welcoming ambience and everyone (staff and residents) were friendly and welcoming. Everywhere was clean and homely and the lift was quiet and comfortable. The accommodation
was beautifully maintained and for extra safety there were two alarm mats in case the resident falls. The carer serving drinks went the extra mile in pouring coffee and fresh water for us. Thank you!

The increased social interaction has significantly improved his overall demeanour. Staff have been incredibly supportive and helpful,

My Mother was assessed by telephone for respite with a view for permanent residency. She had later stages of Vascular Dementia with some behavioural issues which the home was aware of. We were told they could cater for her needs. Within 5 days we were told by email that they could not meet her needs
and she would have to leave without any explanation. We were happy with the care she received from the care assistants but the management and admin team were totally unprofessional and lacking in communication skills. So despite what it says on their website that they specialise in Dementia care, they cannot cater for the later stages as was the case with my mother.
Reply from Marvellous Bindura, General Manager at Barchester Elm Bank Care HomeThank you for taking the time to leave your review. As the newly appointed home manager, I’d appreciate understanding your experience fully so that any required lessons can be learnt.
I really appreciate you speaking positively with regard to our care assistants, and would be happy to talk through the admission and assessment process for those living with dementia. The dementia journey is complex, and being sure we can provide the right level of continued care and wellbeing for all our residents is a priority.
Certain behaviours can be challenging, unfortunately, there are circumstances when the decision to refer has to be made to ensure they receive the correct level of care within a more specialised environment.
I’d be pleased to hear from you whenever you’re ready to talk.

Current Review Score: 9.8 (9.758)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.8 (9.758) out of 10 for Barchester Elm Bank Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 47 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 46 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.758 for Barchester Elm Bank Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (437 Excellents x 5) + (100 Goods x 4) + (14 Satisfactorys x 3) + (2 Poors x 2) ) ÷ 553 Ratings = 4.758
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Barchester Elm Bank Care Home is based on 46 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 115 registered maximum number of service users is 23, which has been reached with 46 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Job Title: Head Chef

Hello. I am Sophie, and I support our Head Chef to produce a varied menu every day, and I manage the kitchen team. It is very important to me that every resident enjoys their food, so I get to know exactly how and when they like their food. We also take into account any dietary and swallowing needs to make sure people get all the nutrition they need. We make lots of treats too for birthdays and events.
