Overview

The Review Score of 9.6 (maximum of 10) for Barchester Wadhurst Manor is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.6 out of 5 from 36 Reviews over all time. This Average Rating is also the rating value for Barchester Wadhurst Manor in Google's Search Results - more info

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5 out of 5 from 25 positive Reviews in the last 12 months.

Detailed Breakdown

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating of all Reviews over all time. For each review the Care Home / service is rated Excellent, Good, Satisfactory, Poor or Very Poor on a number of areas eg Staff, Management etc. The Care Home receives points for each rating as follows: Excellent = 5. Good = 4. Satisfactory = 3. Poor = 2. Very Poor = 1. These points are added up and then divided by the total number of completed ratings to generate the average rating.

    The Average Rating of 4.627 for Barchester Wadhurst Manor is calculated as follows: ( (291 Excellents x 5) + (105 Goods x 4) + (23 Satisfactorys x 3) + (2 Poors x 2) ) ÷ 421 Ratings = 4.627

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 12 months. If there are no Positive Reviews in the last 12 months, then 2.5 points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 2 years. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with 'Extremely Likely' or 'Likely' in answer to the question 'How likely are you to recommend this Care Home to friends and family if they needed similar care or treatment?'

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 5 Positive Reviews, 3 points for the first Positive Review and then 0.25 Points for each of the next 4 Positive Reviews.

    2. 1 point is available for reaching a target number of Positive Reviews based on 20% of the number of registered maximum number of service users. If the target is partially reached then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home with 50 registered maximum number of service users has a target of 10 Positive Reviews, if it has 10 or more Positive Reviews it will receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews will receive 0.7 points.

    3. If there are no Positive Reviews in the last 12 months, then 2.5 points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 2 years. The calculation is the same as above, except the points are divided by 2.

The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Barchester Wadhurst Manor is based on 25 positive Reviews in the last 12 months and is calculated as follows:

    1. 3 + 0.25 + 0.25 + 0.25 + 0.25 = 4

    2. Target of 13 positive Reviews (65 registered maximum number of service users ÷ 5). 25 Reviews ÷ 13 Target Reached = 1

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

I am pleased with the care my relative is receiving particularly in Amber Wing. The nursing and care team and their relationship with both myself and my relative has made this particular journey bearable.

Thank you very much for your kind review.

My mother has been a resident of Wadhurst Manor for almost three years. She suffers from severe dementia. The care, during this time, has been excellent. On arrival her physical health was poor; she is now much improved. The nursing care has been exemplary. Wadhurst is a happy place and has contented residents. The range of activities ensures residents are happy and fulfilled.

It was a shock for my wife and me, as well as mum, for her to move to the dementia wing of a nursing home, but the staff at Wadhurst kindly helped the three of us with this transition. Now, when we take mum for a 'walk' she quickly asks to be taken back to her new friends. It means a lot to know that she is being cared for so well - thank you.

I was extremely likely to recommend this home in that I think the home is really nice and the carers are wonderful. Kind and patient and so dedicated - I have recommended 3 people and times it hasn't worked out.

So now I feel unlikely to recommend it.

Reason No 1 - On Amber, we have a resident who screams HELP almost continually.

Reason No 2 - Two ladies were frightened by another male resident.

Thank you very much for your kind feedback, this as always will be passed on to our team here at Wadhurst Manor.

My husband has been resident in Wadhurst Manor since September 2014 in Memory Lane. Over the last month, his medication has been changed and the nurse I am aware is closely monitoring his reaction as he falls occasionally. The carers are friendly and always welcoming to visitors and are approachable and with the nurse keep me constantly informed. He regards it as home, seems quite happy and enjoys some of the activities as he needs to be stimulated.

My overriding impression of Wadhurst Manor is that it is friendly, caring and welcoming. In particular, the carers and nurses who look after my mother are gentle, observant, kind, patient and professional. Great effort is made to provide activities and whilst some areas of housekeeping could be improved, the general standard is good.

This is a large institution. All institutions suffer in one form or another from being such. This one less than most. My wife's ward seems very well organised and the institution almost is softened by the excellent performance of some/most of the staff. It has the appearance of being well kept and looked after by people who care about such things, as well as caring for the resident.

Thank you for taking the time to write these kind comments about Wadhurst Manor.

Frosted brimmed filled wine glasses greeted us on arrival, guests, residents and carers appeared and soon everyone was chatting, what a convivial party it was.
Soon tables loaded with food appeared I was one of the first to try this wonderful selection, not before I had 3 smoked salmon and cream cheese biscuits, I then chose more salmon, mango sausage rolls (excellent), herb chipolatas, pastry filled rolls and dips and my wife's favourite tiered cake stands with one bite chocolate eclairs and much more. While all the eating and drinking was going on amongst the chatter and conjure, our manager was busy socialising making sure her guests were happy and content.

Tina Dawson, General Manager at Barchester Wadhurst Manor responded to this review on 12 Jan 2018:

Thank you very much for your lovely review.

Care/Support: reliance on agency staff, linguistic difficulties, failure of communication between staff and between staff and residents.
Management: Good in response to residents suggestions or complaints but carers at times spread too thinly on the ground. In addition, apart from pay and working conditions etc a well run organisation of any sort requires of management a caring attitude to employees, so that staff feel appreciated and have a sense that they are valued not just for the work they do but personally, this is particularly important in medical and social care sector (caring for the carers) my impression is that this is somewhat lacking here.
Food: An army marches on its stomach. This applies not just to the military services but especially to hospitals and care homes, whatever the disabilities of residents, whether physical, medical, mental or otherwise, this provision of a varied tasty diet is an essential ingredient. The CQC last year said this area required improvement. Apart from minor variations in menus this still applies. Some fundamental changes, though promised, have not yet been implemented. Moreover, the cooking skills of kitchen staff and the budget need upgrading.

I would highly recommend this care home. It is a purpose built building so works really well and there are always smiling faces when you walk in the door.
Having viewed 10 care homes it was the only one that did not make me feel depressed but it is one of the most expensive care homes and there are areas for improvement.
Taste, as one of the primary senses which is often one of the last to go it seems sad that this is an area that needs improvement. There are excellent cakes and biscuits but the main diet is unvaried and one cannot live on sugar alone.

Smell, on my first visit I was delighted that it smelt clean and fresh, however, there have been times when the smell of urine in the corridors was very unpleasant.
Care, the care staff are exceptional THANK YOU but staff numbers have been reduced (used to be two on duty now it can be one). This makes it harder for them to keep to the high standards they set and could be the reason for the above problem and a recent occurrence of no staff at all on the whole floor.

Thank you for the kind comments.

My aunt aged 96 had severals falls and professionals advised that she moved from her residential care home.
When we viewed Wadhurst Manor we were all impressed with the personal attentiveness of many staff. This was a feature during her stay that sadly was only several weeks she died in her sleep. She was looked after really well. We marked all parameters very highly except value for money since we realise that good nursing care should be expensive but we felt the admission administration fee of £3000 was excessive.

In quiet surroundings, Wadhust Manor provides a good level of care provided by friendly, professional staff. A feeling of being at home is quickly generated. Food is prepared on-site and the cooks do good home cooking and menus which changed on a weekly basis. Care staff are very resident-focused. The experience is, overall, a very good one.

Wadhurst Manor is well run and provides a high standard of care. It goes beyond the minimum of doing 'just enough'. Staff are hard-working and show real commitment to residents' wellbeing. A family can be sure that nursing staff know the resident well enough to be able to identify and address problems, should the need arise. Dementia care, in particular, is of a high standard.

Very impressed with Wadhurst care home. The grounds are attractive, tidy and well maintained. Cosmetically, the home is of a very high standard. The interior is spacious, light and tastefully decorated. Residents have a wide range of activities to participate in each week or can opt to have quiet times. 1:1 life at Wadhurst is fun and active. Menus are designed to take residents likes/dislikes into consideration - based on fresh produce, cooked to high quality. The staff, management, nurses, carers, catering and activities are what makes the home - creating a warm, family feeling in the home, whilst delivering professional, high-quality person-centred care.

My brother has lived happily at Wadhurst Manor for nearly 5 years now. He was very poorly when he arrived and unable to look after himself anymore. With loving care and interest in him as an individual, Wadhurst Manor has made a new man of him!

He says he feels part of a community - not only the community of the home, where he has made real friends amongst the other residents, staff and volunteers, but also of the wider village community.

Wadhurst Manor is very good at involving the village in activities it organises and connecting with the local U3A, the parish church and schools and youth groups. I'd say the quality of my brother's life has improved and his social world has enlarged at a time when he might have had a very bad outlook indeed, and Wadhurst Manor is to be heartily thanked for this transformation.

Professional management team who assessed my mother in hospital with very little notice. Staff always friendly, chat and helpful. A good size balcony on the dementia wing (memory lane) so residents can safely go outside. Baskets along the hallways with items for residents (handbags, hats, teddies etc). Full activity programme every day. The setting is very nice with secure gardens open for residents to walk out in. Chef has made something my father wanted.

This is the third time I've been to Wadhurst Manor. Generally I'm happy to stay there but I do think standards have fallen, reduced staff, too many agency workers. They try hard but need more training. The long term staff cannot be faulted. Management are very good but I feel their hands are tied in regards to finance. I was in business for fifty years and know expenditure has to be in check. But I learnt a lot that sometimes cutting back on wages can be sighted.

Tom Holloway, Digital Marketing Assistant at Barchester Wadhurst Manor responded to this review on 13 Nov 2015:

’Thank you for your review, we really appreciate your feedback and are sorry to hear of your concerns.

The homes staffing levels and training are in line with industry guidelines and are variable in accordance with the needs of the residents.

We are also pleased to confirm that despite the economical challenges we were able to increase our staff pay rates going forward.

A very caring, kind environment.
