My wife has been a resident in Hawthorne Care Home for approximately 6 months with dementia, her condition started approximately seven years ago but with the pandemic it worsened so unfortunately she had to be admitted to a care /nursing home. The staff have to put up with many challenges and they cope
very well with my wife's. The care she receives from the staff is excellent, her communication is very difficult to understand but with the professionalism of the caring staff they manage very well. I find the management very professional, understanding, friendly and very obliging in any information you ask them. I as her husband don't like to see my wife in care but with the wonderful care, attention, and dignity that is provided by the whole of the staff I know that I have made the right choice.
Reply from Mawuli, Home Manager at The Hawthorns Care HomeThank you for your kind words, which I have shared with the entire team! It is our privilege to care for your wife at The Hawthorns, and it's always a pleasure to see you when you visit.

Overall Experience 5.0 out of 5
My sister was very disturbed when she moved to The Hawthorns, by a hospital stay, and then coming to a new place. Her mental state made it difficult for her to be trusting, and she, at first, refused food, drink, and medications, and was unkind to staff. The staff have taken her fears and preferences
on board and gradually gained her trust. Their patience is unending, and they know when to cajole and when to let her simmer down. Nursing my sister can't have been easy for them, and sometimes it must have been very concerning. Their liaison with the local GP is particularly good, as is their attention to her day-to-day health. In the last three weeks, she has calmed down amazingly. She is eating and drinking and accepting her meds. She is interacting well with staff, and taking much more interest in life, people, and events. Her paranoia has reduced massively. She was appreciative when lent a CD player (likes classical music), and a screen on which she can watch wildlife programmes.
Reply from Mawuli Mensa, Home Manager at The Hawthorns Care HomeThank you for your lovely review. Everyone at The Hawthorns truly enjoys taking care of your sister, and I will make sure to share your kind words with the team.

My mum came to Hawthorns with significantly advanced dementia a bit over 4 years ago.
Her condition has presented many challenges, she has been through the pandemic and seen staff and managers come and go, but the compassion and thoughtfulness of the care she has received from all over her time has
been as consistent as I could have hoped for.
Quality of her care was my first priority and as her son and attorney, I've found the friendliness, understanding of her condition and communication of all staff, particularly the nurses and attending GP and other medical professionals, resident-centred and excellent. I have never felt concern for my mum's safety, comfort or dignity and have always been able to talk with someone when I've needed to.
Let's be clear nobody wants to find their loved ones with illness or other considerations that require the service they provide at Hawthorns despite their professionalism, but in the event, I can say I'm glad my mum was in their care until the end.
Reply from Mawuli, Home Manager at The Hawthorns Care HomeThank you for your kind words which I have passed on to the staff. It was an honour to care for your mum, and we're grateful for your recognition of our team's compassion.

Dad arrived at Hawthorns after spending 5 weeks in hospital. The transition went well and I was kept updated with timings and days etc. Dad has a ground-floor room which is large and airy, we took his chair and a few extras to make him feel home from home. The staff from management, activity nurses
and care team are all welcoming and approachable. I've been kept informed of everything that goes on behind the scenes too, which is a comfort to my family. The stress we all felt has definitely been lifted, especially for my mum who was caring for Dad. Dad always looks clean and well-dressed, and I feel his needs are being met. Staff go above and beyond keeping him safe, well and happy!

My mother came to the home in 2018 and was looked after beautifully the whole time she was living there.
I found the home to be well run from the top down and the carers were kind and empathetic and treated Mum with dignity always. Nothing was ever too much trouble, if I had a concern it was acted
upon swiftly and all the staff were very approachable. I never worried about Mum being in their care.
They supported me too as it became difficult to see Mum deteriorate. They are wonderful, well trained carers and perform the most vital work at the end of a person's life. I thank them from my heart and would recommend this home for anyone thinking of placing their loved one into care.

My father moved into the care home on 8th July with some trepidation, however his worries were soon put aside. All the staff come to introduce themselves and welcome him the staff are friendly and cannot do enough for the people there.
The choice of food on offer is very good and offer drinks throughout
the day.
Prior to moving into the home, we had several discussions with the Manager who was so kind and understanding, he let us get the room ready for my father prior to his arrival so my father had his own things around him which helped him settle.
The manager and his staff could not be more caring, helpful and compassionate. This is a lovely care home with good-sized rooms and lovely residential and dining rooms.
I would recommend this to anyone wanting care for a loved one as you can be assured they will be well looked after and cared for.

My dad came to Hawthorns in December 2023. He had Dementia and he took a little while to settle in. The staff are fantastic, always there to help residents and visitors. Dad was well looked after, they were always around if you needed help and always let our mum know any information that occurred. The
entertainment people always made sure that the residents are stimulated and busy.

My mother-in-law has been at Hawthorns for quite a while now.
The staff are very attentive to the residents, they look after them very well and are always happy to help.
The Entertainment team try and keep the residents stimulated with varied activities and concerts.
They also make a point of celebrating
important days of the year including birthdays.
They have some great coffee mornings too when residents, family and staff get together.
The Management team are always available if required and very approachable.
They take time to speak to the residents and it shows they know their individual personalities and needs.
Any issues are also quickly resolved professionally.
They always make us feel very welcome and update us on how she has been that day.
We feel happy she is looked after when we are not there which is our main concern.

A very dear friend of mine was at Hawthorns for four months as she needed nursing care. During that time she was unable to get out of bed and she was not able to feed herself. The staff were always caring towards her and her needs, they fed her with patience and understanding, she was always clean.
They
responded quickly if I queried anything on my friend's behalf. My experience of the staff I came in contact with was welcoming and supportive.
At the end of my friend's life, everyone concerned including the GP, showed her, myself and her other visitors kindness and compassion.

My dad has been at Hawthorns for a little over a year now. I have to say in his time here he has been very well looked after. The staff are always very considerate and caring. My dad is not the easiest of residents and can be very challenging for them, however they are always very kind and deal with
him calmly. This last weekend saw my dad reach 80, the home were very supportive of us spending time with him there, they allowed us to have a small family gathering in a room, they even put up some banners and balloons that made his whole day so special even after the family had left. All staff are always polite and so caring. Thank you all so much from the bottom of my heart.

My mum went into the Hawthorns on 25th August 2023 straight from hospital, she was poorly at the time and we knew she probably didn't have that long left. Mum started deteriorating after a couple of weeks and sadly passed away at the Hawthorns on the 27th of September 2023. The staff, doctors and management
were all brilliant. We cannot thank them enough for the love, care and attention they gave to Mum especially the last few hours prior to her passing. Mum was happy at the Hawthorns and the staff made us feel welcome on on visits and watching interactions between staff and other residents during our visits respect, dignity and empathy were observed. Thank you to you all.

My dad was terminally ill with stomach cancer and only survived for 2 weeks at Hawthorns. His care was excellent, the manager and all his staff are so welcoming and caring that nothing was too much trouble when they cared for my dad, they even ordered the foods he liked, although he never ate them,
as he was in the last stages. I can't thank them enough for the care they took of my dad. They also cared for me as I lost my mum 2 months before and I'm going through a very difficult time.

My father was provided care by The Hawthorns team following a difficult few months in the hospital (December 21-March 22). He spent three months being well cared for, built some really positive relationships, and nothing was ever too much trouble. He returned to live alone in his flat and, unfortunately,
had two falls. Dad himself asked if he could return to The Hawthorns - as it felt more like home than home. December 22 saw him putting his flat up for sale, and he was given a choice of a few available rooms. Many of his belongings are with him, and it feels like walking into Dad's. The manager takes time to check in when we visit, and I know they check in with Dad. It is always great to visit, and many staff always seem pleased to see us! There have been some staff changes; however, many who remember Dad well remain - the newer ones are certainly getting to know him, how he likes his tea made, and to remember to ensure his meals are hot! Thanks to you all - what a testimony for a former resident asking to return!

Current Review Score: 9.9 (9.864)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.9 (9.864) out of 10 for The Hawthorns Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.9 out of 5 from 28 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 28 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.864 for The Hawthorns Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (283 Excellents x 5) + (38 Goods x 4) + (3 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 324 Ratings = 4.864
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for The Hawthorns Care Home is based on 28 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 74 registered maximum number of service users is 14.8, which has been reached with 28 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
