I am most impressed by the attitude of the staff. Yes, very professional but very informal and smiling application of their relationship with the patients.
Reply from Jo Cuddy, Manager at The Hawthorns Care HomeMany thanks for taking the time to review our Home. The feedback is much appreciated and I will inform the staff team.

In general, I have found that the care that my mother has received has been excellent. All aspects of her care have been given with kindness and dignity. The meals are always nutritional and any request is catered for. The daily activities are always varied and every effort is made to make the experiences
enjoyable and not condescending. Any medical problems are dealt with immediately. I have no worries about my mother's care. When I leave after a visit I can do so knowing that she is safe and well cared for.

After 2 years at The Hawthorns, the consistently high standard of care and facilities has seen my mother’s anxious nature replaced with confidence. She looks better now than she did before she moved to The Hawthorns. Moreover, I benefit from the assurance of The Hawthorns close monitoring and reporting,
and the knowledge that each health event that occurs is dealt with efficiency and kindness. The Home has become our second family and my mother enjoys all the comings and goings from the laundry, maintenance, activities, cleaning, doctor visits, cook visits, chiropody as well as the essential care – these are all done on a personal basis as each individual has got to know Mum. My mother's room has her pictures and small pieces of furniture from her home. She enjoys a spacious ensuite shower room and a high-quality adjustable bed. I cannot praise this purpose built home highly enough.

Overall Experience 4.0 out of 5
Mum is mostly happy with the service provided however there are two areas she is not happy with. The first is the quality of the food. We have complained on a number of occasions, the other is with regards to male carers. We have requested female carers only as mum does not want male carers helping
with her personal hygiene/toileting needs. However, there have been occasions when male agency staff have been attending to her which makes her quite upset.
Reply from Jo Cuddy, Manager at The Hawthorns Care HomeThank you for your review, over the last 2 years your mum became a much loved and important part of our community. When a resident expresses preferences we endeavour to meet these. I am sorry on these occasions we didn’t. We do and will continue to act on any concerns that are bought to our attention.

Overall Experience 5.0 out of 5
My relation has lived in The Hawthorns for a year. I am very impressed by the level of care and attention to detail that this Home provides. The manager knows all the resident's names and their individual needs. Her positive attitude to providing the best care possible to all the residents is reflected
in the way the staff treat them. I am always impressed that all staff greet you and are friendly and open. Day to day care is provided by a dedicated team with a mixture of nurses and care assistants. There are plenty of communal areas where residents can mix, read or watch TV. Activities offered to residents are varied and imaginative with, at least, separate activities in the morning and afternoon. The food offered is excellent, varied and cooked from scratch. There is always a choice for every meal and staff ensure that the residents choose food that is suitable for their medical and personal needs. Rooms and communal areas are always kept clean and odour free.

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.9 (9.864) out of 10 for The Hawthorns Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.9 out of 5 from 28 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 28 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.864 for The Hawthorns Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (283 Excellents x 5) + (38 Goods x 4) + (3 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 324 Ratings = 4.864
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for The Hawthorns Care Home is based on 28 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 74 registered maximum number of service users is 14.8, which has been reached with 28 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
