My sister has done so well since being transferred to The Hawthorns Care Centre. She is very happy here and has gone from being withdrawn and shy to happy and animated. I'm sure this is because of the care and patience of all the staff here. They respect her wishes and allow her to make choices. My
sister enjoys the tasty meals and also the daily activities in the lounge. She likes to join in during these stimulating times.
Thank you so much all of you for your care and patience. We are so, so happy to see her doing so well.

My mother-in-law was discharged from the hospital to The Hawthorns a few days before she died. The Hawthorns staff were very kind, warm and caring. When we visited her we found that great care had been taken in unpacking her things and making her room look homely, even though by this time she was receiving
end-of-life care. When we phoned, the staff were polite, helpful and sensitive. When we visited, the manager approached us and asked whether he could help us and made us feel very welcome. We wished that my mother-in-law could have been transferred to The Hawthorns sooner, as she was made very comfortable during her final days.
Reply from Mawuli Mensa, Home Manager at The Hawthorns Care HomeDear reviewer, we are glad we played a small part in making your mother-in-law's last days comfortable and thank you for your kind words.

I could not have asked for a better care home for my husband to spend the last six weeks of his life. The premises were spotless, his room was like home-from-home, and the staff, each and every one of them were absolutely amazing, not only to my husband but also to me. Nothing was too much trouble,
and there was always a shoulder for me to cry on.
Reply from Mawuli Mensa, Home Manager at The Hawthorns Care HomeThank you very much for your kind words; it was an absolute delight for the team to be there for you and your family during a rather challenging time. Please do not hesitate to contact the home if you need anything.

Some staff are rude, do not turn my nan on her side when she has to be at all times. She has Parkinsons' and does not get helped to eat or any encouragement as she has Alzheimer's and needs to be encouraged to eat. She had missing cutlery and instead of getting her more or helping her find it they just
turned and said its there. Family member later found it beside her on the bed! Nan is bed-bound and she's had a jug of water left by the window completely out of reach. Clothes been moved or taken when we have a sign to say we will do her washing, amongst more things. Me and family have visited Nan and the door was wide open, she had nothing on and no blanket on her! Occasionally cold food.
Reply from Mawuli Mensa, Home Manager at The Hawthorns Care HomeThank you for your review and sharing your experience. I am very sorry for the experience you have had, which is totally different from the vast majority of our residents and relatives. When I was made aware of your concerns, a senior member of the management team from Head Office met with your family and a full investigation was carried out and the outcome shared with your family and they were happy with the outcome.
We took on board all your concerns, I would like to assure you that our main goal is to provide the best possible care in line with our value which is ‘Providing excellent care with compassion’
Once again, I offer my sincerest apologies.

In my hour of need I was desperate to find Respite Care for my mum as she became very poorly with a water infection as I was exhausted from looking after her for 4 days over the Easter Period and no one was willing to help me. The Manager was brilliant and reassured me they could help my mum. I was
able to visit the next day and selected what room I would like. The day after she went in there as you can imagine I was really worried. However, there were 4 staff that gave us a warm welcome and put mum and I at our ease. The rooms are spacious and very clean. The food is lovely too. When mum went in she was very shy and didn't talk to anyone. By the time she left she was talking to the other residents which I couldn't believe! The staff are amazing kind/caring and nothing is too much trouble. My mum was there for 5 weeks and I never thought she would be able to come home so I'm extremely grateful to the staff for caring for her and making her independent again. I would highly recommend.

The care that my husband received at The Hawthornes Care Centre was outstanding, the staff (all of them) to me were so dedicated to all their roles. So friendly, happy, caring people and so understanding. The care home was clean, comfortable and welcoming to all. Patients and visitors alike. Yes this,
mine and families, is a recommendation for care, a welcoming home from home.

My father was taken to The Hawthorns Care Centre for end of life care, following a short time in the hospital. The family felt anxious, fearing he would be left unattended but our fears were soon eased by the manager and his staff, who quickly addressed our concerns. Their approach was highly professional
and reassuring. We were fully aware of a limited life expectancy and sadly my father passed away after 2-weeks, but during that time, his care was faultless, dignified and compassionate. The home was immaculately clean and staff monitored him regularly, making sure dad was comfortable. Other residents looked well cared for, and staff constantly interacted with them. As dad's health deteriorated, we were kept informed and supported throughout. The staff looked after my father beautifully, with sensitivity and compassion on a level I think, hard to beat. Special thanks to the manager and five members of staff in particular, but not forgetting anyone else who was involved in dad's care, you were all wonderful.

Mum became a resident at the Hawthorns in August 2021, after having several falls at home, a decline in her health and the onset of Dementia. All the staff are really lovely and have a wonderful approach to the residents. Mum is treated with respect, kindness and there is always someone to check on
her. The staff are very friendly towards us as a family and are always ready and willing to chat to us and make sure we are happy with everything. There is a wonderful activities team that organises many different activities for the residents to join in with and they are all so enthusiastic and caring in their jobs. What was a very difficult decision for the family to make, has definitely been helped by the understanding of all the staff. I would definitely recommend Hawthorns to other families.

My Dad moved into The Hawthorns in November last year following a series of falls at home and a worsening of his dementia. The staff are really lovely, from the carers to the entertainments team, maintenance staff, cleaners, catering staff, etc. They all treat my Dad with kindness and respect, along
with a bit of banter, which he loves! Staff always take the time to chat with dad (and myself on my weekly visit) and check that we are happy with everything. The team are well led by the manager who is approachable and appears to care for both the residents and the staff. (Who also put up with my many phone calls/questions leading up to my dad's admittance during the pandemic which was slightly stressful). The rooms are clean, dad says that he enjoys the food and I have been impressed by all the effort that goes into entertaining the residents with singers coming in, games organised, crafts, gardening, and the like. Overall my Dad is happy, has settled in well and I would definitely recommend this care home.

My father became a resident in February 2020 which was just before the pandemic. Despite the lockdowns, I had complete faith that my father would be well looked after. The staff are very welcoming, and above all, caring and compassionate towards the residents and relatives alike. I will forever be grateful
to this care home for taking such good care of my loved one.

My Dad became a permanent resident at The Hawthorns in August 2018. Since then, he has been treated with the utmost respect and the care is second to none. My Mum, sister and I visit as often as we can but we know that if we can't get to see Dad for any reason, he is being wonderfully looked after.
Whenever we visit, we are treated so very kindly by all the staff and they make a point of coming to talk to us and ask how we are, etc. This makes such a difference - the staff are all extremely busy, but they always make a point of saying hello - such a nice touch. I would have no hesitation in recommending The Hawthorns to anyone; it was a hard decision to admit Dad to a nursing home, but we don't regret the decision at all, knowing that Dad is living in such a wonderful environment. Thank you to everyone involved who take such good care of my Dad.

I moved my Dad here in January from another home and although I agonised over the decision, it was the best decision I made. My Dad is so much happier here and there are always so many happy, approachable staff on duty. He has settled so well and is always treated with kindness and dignity and I am
always greeted warmly too from all staff. I had The Hawthorns recommended to me and I too would highly recommend it myself.

I have recommended The Hawthorns 3 times, on each occasion the residents have been placed. My Mum lived here for 6 years and I can only say that I found, such an amazing team of carers, nursing staff, management, cleaning, and catering staff. Yes, I did experience some problems but found that The
Hawthorne's team regardless of who I spoke with always resolved any issues I had quickly. Yes, I recommend this nursing home, looking for the right place for your relative is really such a hard thing to do, such a huge responsibility but I have to say my final decision of placing My Mum here was one of the best I ever made. Really the staff here really do care and will do anything for you. Have faith in them they really are the best! Treat the staff here well and with respect, and you will receive the very best of care for your relative. My only regret is I am not allowed to name those who excelled themselves in the care of my Mother and myself. Heartfelt thanks to you all you are so special.

It is now coming up to 2 years since my mother arrived at The Hawthorns. As yet, I have never had a reason to complain, due to the excellent response from management and staff to any concerns that I have.
All family members know that no 2 days are the same but the staff have to react to all eventualities
which occur, promptly and with dignity. I visit mum 3 times a week and nearly always leave with a smile on my face. Long may it continue.

My neighbour who was a widow stayed in The Hawthorns for over two years. Usually, I visited her twice a week in the early evening. Parking spaces were always available. The home and her ensuite room were most attractive, modern, clean, comfortable and well equipped. Staff members were invariably kind,
caring and polite to visitors. I would certainly recommend this home to friends.

The manager was extremely supportive when dad came a resident in August 2015. His Dementia had worsened and his care home at the time could no longer meet his needs.
Dad would become physically aggressive around personal care so the manager organised training so that staff knew how to cope with dad.
She also arranged for the doctor to prescribe appropriate medication.
Dad is very happy here and I am happy that he receives the care he needs. If there are problems (nowhere is perfect) they are taken seriously and dealt with speedily.

Current Review Score: 9.9 (9.864)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.9 (9.864) out of 10 for The Hawthorns Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.9 out of 5 from 28 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 28 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.864 for The Hawthorns Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (283 Excellents x 5) + (38 Goods x 4) + (3 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 324 Ratings = 4.864
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for The Hawthorns Care Home is based on 28 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 74 registered maximum number of service users is 14.8, which has been reached with 28 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
