I think my recommendation is summed up in that if I had to choose care for me one day, this is the care home I would choose. Besides the friendly and helpful staff, I find the aspect and outlook from Horfield Lodge to be perfect in that one can see there is a normal life going on outside whilst enjoying
the care in the home.
Lastly and most importantly the Christian ethos under which the home is run is so important.

My Aunt lived at Horfield Lodge for nearly 5 years and was always treated with the utmost respect, love and compassion. The carers were like an extension of her family. We enjoyed many visits to Horfield Lodge celebrating events in our family and were always welcomed by the lovely staff. Nothing was
too much trouble for them. They just wanted us to feel as much at home as my Aunt did. The home is always clean and every effort is made to include residents in activities from making Easter Bonnets to Poppies and everything in between. The musical activities are also a great hit with residents. As with other MHA homes that we have visited, the food is of a very high standard.
Reply from Lesley Griffiths, Home Manager at Horfield LodgeThank you for such positive comments about the staff, home, activities. We are so pleased that your Aunt was happy here at Horfield and as a family, you were very much involved in what was going on in the home. As a home, we strive to work and live by the values of MHA. The positive feedback shows that we reinforce the importance of these values. Your Aunt had a positive impact on staff and she will be greatly missed. I will share your review with all the staff who will appreciate such lovely words.

My mum was a resident at Horfield Lodge for four and a half years prior to her death in June 2019 and was very happy there. She was very much part of the community and especially enjoyed the Christian elements of the activities and the wonderful musical entertainment. The management and staff are caring
and supportive towards the resident and their families. Over the years, we shared much laughter and many tears. As mum wasn't able to leave the home we enjoyed several excellent Christmas lunches there and were able to use the cafe space for other family celebrations too. The home is clean bright and airy and benefits from pleasant outdoor space.
We wouldn't hesitate to recommend this home. It was such a blessing to know that Mum was content and being well cared for.

My aunt was a resident at Horfield Lodge for 21 months until she sadly passed away. Our family couldn't have asked for more care and attention from the dedicated team of nurses and carers, during her time here, particularly in her last weeks. There is a lovely atmosphere to this home and visitors are
always made to feel most welcome. Thank you, everyone.

My mother died in your care this month She had been in the dementia unit at Horfield Lodge for 4 1/2 years. She received the most wonderful care, even though her behaviours, due to dementia made her difficult to care for.
The carers always tried to see beyond the dementia and make connections with
the person my mum had been.
I always felt confident mum received the best possible care from you. You helped my mum and myself through a difficult time. So many thanks.
Reply from Lesley Griffiths, Home Manager at Horfield LodgeThank you for your recent review on Horfield Lodge. Placing a loved one in permanent care affects the whole family and is very hard to deal with. But to my amazement, I felt we were all supported during this process a year ago. As the wonderful staff got to know my husband, we were recognised as part of his care team too, welcomed by name by everyone
from the receptionist, manager, volunteer coordinator, activity lady and all the carers. Consequently, we look forward to every visit. When I see my husband being gently teased by staff, and grinning back, I know he is happy. I am contacted the moment there is an issue to be discussed.
Spending so much time at Horfield Lodge, I can see the kindness and respect shown to all the residents and their smiling response to the staff. There is an air of calm and warmth. The rooms and en suites are pleasant, light, spacious, and very clean. The cafe/lounge area is open to the public and residents are brought to join in the activities. Other imaginative activities are regularly provided too.
Reply from Lesley Griffiths, Home Manager at Horfield LodgeThank you for such lovely positive comments about Horfield Lodge. It is a hard decision for anyone to make the transition from home to a care home and the effects it has on the person and the relatives is a very emotional roller coaster. So it is lovely to read that the staff are wonderful and that they have got to know your husband and that you look forward to visiting us. Thank you for rating us high in all areas and that you would recommend Horfield Lodge. I will share your comments with all the staff where such positive and kind words are always appreciated and welcomed.

I wanted to express my thanks to everyone at Horfield Lodge who looked after my mother, especially at the end. The love and compassion shown towards my mother and to us, her daughters, was humbling. I will never forget the kindness we experienced during the night when my mother passed away. We were
allowed to say our goodbyes without interference but were so grateful to know that we were not alone and that help was at hand.
I noticed that there is the following quotation on the notice board at Horfield Lodge:
“You matter because you are you and you matter to the last moment of your life”
The staff of Horfield Lodge certainly lived up to that statement in their treatment of my mother.
Reply from Lesley Griffiths, Home Manager at Horfield LodgeThank you for your lovely kind words about everyone at Horfield Lodge. Your Mum was a lovely lady and was loved by everyone. I have always been very pleased but last weeks party for the royal wedding was outstanding.
A lot of thought, effort and hard work were put into this event.
Also, as always, love and care given to the residents.
The atmosphere was great, my mother said 'You wouldn't find another home like this one'.
(She is 92 and has been quite poorly the week before).
I can't praise the manager and her staff enough.

Horfield Lodge, it's staff and the wider community of families, volunteers and residents, is a well-run care home which is pleasant to visit always. The staff are always friendly and welcoming. They have built good relationships with the resident and encouraged him to join in activities but without over pressurizing. Over the months this has meant that, after initial reluctance, he has grown to enjoy and choose to join in with other residents. As

Horfield Lodge is the most lovely home because of its kind and caring staff, pastoral support and volunteers. It has been my mother-in-laws' home for the past 5 years and she has been very happy there. Her health and emotional needs have always been met compassionately and with respect. As an example
of how each resident is an individual one morning when I visited she was reading a poetry book which had been given to her by a member of staff. We cannot find anything but praise to say about Horfield Lodge.

My father was a resident on Willow floor and we found the standard of care and the commitment of staff to be first rate. Nothing was too much trouble and an atmosphere of calm kindliness was evident at all times. Staff went out of their way to be helpful, positive and supportive and built up an excellent
relationship with my dad from the outset; they really seemed to understand him and see the lovely man behind the dementia right from the start.
I was a frequent visitor and spoke with many other residents; everyone seemed very happy there. Horfield Lodge provided everything I'd hoped for when choosing a residential home for dad, I always felt welcomed there too. I can't praise it highly enough.

Current Review Score: 9.6 (9.596)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.6 (9.596) out of 10 for Horfield Lodge is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.6 out of 5 from 30 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 29 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.596 for Horfield Lodge is calculated as follows: ( (235 Excellents x 5) + (85 Goods x 4) + (19 Satisfactorys x 3) + (4 Poors x 2) + (1 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 344 Ratings = 4.596
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Horfield Lodge is based on 29 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 75 registered maximum number of service users is 15, which has been reached with 29 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
