After two years of living in residential care, Mum moved into dementia care at The Oakes at the end of September 2019. Despite the initial confusion and distress caused by the move, she settled relatively quickly, due largely to the quality of care and support she received from the staff. Apart from
vascular dementia which significantly affects her short term memory, Mum suffers from severe osteoporosis and osteoarthritis which means that her mobility is compromised and she suffers a lot of pain when moving or just sitting. Staff are patient and genuinely caring, making every effort to maintain her comfort and dignity. Mum's deafness also impacts on her ability to socialise with other residents but staff ensure she has some quality one-to-one sessions. The family are confident that she is in a caring environment which suits her changed needs.

I attended a cheese and wine event recently which I thoroughly enjoyed. There had been some thought into this event which both residents and staff alike appeared to enjoy and participated in (where they could).
I think perhaps that these type of events could be better promoted though. I only knew
about the event due to another visitor mentioning it. It was actually included on the notice board but this passed me by. Perhaps a monthly newsletter (maybe via e-mail) could include this type of thing or a leaflet left in residents rooms to hand to their visitors could be an idea too. I'd hate to think that future events weren't attended due to people being unaware they were planned.
On a positive, all who took part said they'd love another type of event and appreciated the effort of those involved in arranging it.

My husband had 7 weeks care at Oakes. He has dementia, initially admitted for respite care. A very good room with own bathroom etc. He was mobile then so took part in a variety of activities and we took him out for walks. He enjoyed the food, particularly puddings. In his time there he was settled,
enjoyed the activities and we were happy he was there. All staff were friendly and helpful with us, management and office staff very helpful, thorough and efficient.

My Auntie, now 97, had lived alone for many years after caring for her husband through stroke and ultimately cancer. He had been a Captain of a tanker for BP and they had been all over the world together. Following his death she continued to travel with her sister until her death. Since then, although
highly intelligent and always a pleasure to talk to with her radical and enlightened view of the world, she has expressed the wish to die as she saw no future. Having accepted that she needed help, my nieces and daughter in law found The Oakes, far better than all the other places they had seen.
Auntie has made friends, something she never wanted to, and when I went to see her a couple of days ago she never once mentioned wanting to die! I was also invited to have lunch with her, which was quite unexpected, and we had a lovely conversation. She is now looking forward to things.
Well done, the staff at The Oakes!

The facilities are great, it feels more like a nice hotel than a care home. I am particularly impressed with the 'beach' that is downstairs, it's amazing and it's done my mum the world of good going there.
The food is all home cooked, plenty of variety. If I or any of mums friends and family want to
stay for lunch they can, which is massive bonus. It really nice to spend time with mum and the other residents at mealtimes.
The activities coordinator is fantastic, she really has that personal touch and a lovely caring manner. The staff in the office are brilliant and very organised, they go out of their way to help with any admin issues. I ring the office to speak to mum and they happily run around the building looking for her for me.
The nursing staff have been excellent from day one, the level of care mum gets is second to none. They are so patient and understanding with mum and her complex needs. Mums health has improved so much since being cared for by the staff at the Oakes.

The Oakes Care Centre is a wonderful facility. The staff are very caring and treat the residents very well. My mum has come on leaps and bounds since becoming a resident. They provide lots of stimulation and activities and encourage socialising. The facilities provided are really nice and the food is
of a high standard. Overall a lovely place with kind, friendly and helpful staff.

My mother settled into her new environment 6 weeks ago and immediately was less stressed, anxious and much happier.

She enjoys being with ladies in a similar position as herself. They meet regularly and laugh and enjoy each other's company. The staff are very caring, observant and nothing is too

much trouble. They all go the extra mile to support my mum and myself.

Recently visited my great aunt who is a resident of the home and utterly blown away how wonderful Oakes is. My aunt is fully settled into her new home and is comfortable and happy. The staff are wonderful and treat her with such respect she has nothing but praise for them. The manager introduced herself
and took the time to talk to me and reassure me of any concerns I had and showed me around the home and it’s just lovely .
The environment was clean and welcoming and I’m sure in summer the gardens are a delight for the residents.

When I accompanied my friend visiting her aunt before Christmas, I was pleasantly surprised at how lovely the home was.
Her aunt seemed to be very well looked after by very kind and friendly staff and her room was immaculate.
Everyone said hello and even the manager made an effort to come over for
a chat.
My friend's aunt seemed very settled and content and even said the food was "delicious".
It was definitely somewhere I would recommend to anyone looking for a residential care home.

I visited The Oakes Care Centre regularly to visit my aunt suffering health issues, I would like to thank all the staff for being friendly, caring and very attentive to her needs. They were always welcoming and helpful when I visited. The centre is beautiful and her room was always clean, tidy and well
maintained. All the staff showed kindness and empathy at all times and the manager was always visible and keen to listen to anything we had to say.

I have recently visited my friend who has moved into the home quite recently.
The home smelt lovely on entering and the cleanliness was like walking into a hotel.
We were greeted by the new manager who was very friendly and approachable, she showed us around the home and was very knowledgeable regarding
the care my friend required. Another member of staff showed us my friend's bedroom which again, was like walking into a hotel! I wouldn’t have thought I was in a care home!
The dining room was set out like a restaurant a had a lovely atmosphere. The lounge area felt comfortable and cosy.
The toilets were clean and regularly checked whilst we were visiting.
My friend was amazed at the village shop and loved the idea that she could buy something from here. She also loved the grand piano just off from the main entrance!

Visited a relative on respite and was genuinely impressed with the care provided here. An organised and well-led team that really does seem to treat residents with kindness and compassion. The staff were brilliant and manager answered all questions I had clearly, plus got back to me on a couple of questions
quickly. Great care.

The overall care is excellent. Good staff, kind and disrespectful. Activities improving due to recent staff changes. Dining experience improved by tablecloths and flowers - food a little lacklustre but nutritionally sound.

Current Review Score: 8.4 (8.431)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 8.4 (8.431) out of 10 for The Oakes Care Centre is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.7 out of 5 from 4 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 3.7 out of 5 from 4 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.723 for The Oakes Care Centre is calculated as follows: ( (37 Excellents x 5) + (7 Goods x 4) + (3 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 47 Ratings = 4.723
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 3.708 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for The Oakes Care Centre is based on 4 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 = 3.375
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 60 registered maximum number of service users is 12. 4 Positive Reviews ÷ 12 = 0.333
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
