Hopton Cottage Care Home in Huddersfield achieved ‘Outstanding' in responsive care and ‘Good’ in the other four categories during the last inspection in June 2019.

The staff at Hopton Cottage Care Home believe that everyone's parent or relative should feel excited to go to their new home. Staff believe in giving residents a fun new life as they start a brand new chapter.

The team provides first-class, 24-hour residential care in a purpose-built home.

Hopton Cottage has three distinct neighbourhoods which enable them to best look after a person's exact needs whether they are: mentally sound, starting to be forgetful or for those who have more advanced dementia.

Hopton Cottage is in the perfect location, just 14 mins by car, from Huddersfield or Dewsbury. It is in a pretty part of Mirfield, surrounded by beautiful countryside.

The team at Hopton Cottage believe that your family member should be able to enjoy their own private luxury cottage room with en-suite shower, TV, DVD player, phone and internet access, access to a private garden, delicious food home-cooked daily by the chefs with locally sourced ingredients.

The home provides all residents with spacious and comfortable lounge areas and supports and encourages dignity and independence and offers a large program of events and fun activities to keep active and social according to individual tastes.

At Hopton Cottage, your relative can start to enjoy life again with the safety of experienced and qualified staff on hand 24-hours a day.

The staff team at Hopton Cottage believe that when your elderly relative moves into a care home instead of waiting, their enjoyment and quality of life improves a lot. It's Hopton Cottage's opinion that residents live longer too because their spirit is lifted. Staff get residents eating well again, make sure they take all their tablets each day and catch health issues early on, so more can be done to treat them.

We have been delighted with Dad's care at Hopton. Nothing is too much trouble for the staff. He's been there since October 2022 as a permanent resident and he clearly enjoys being there. The friendly banter with many staff keeps him laughing and engaged. Thank you to everyone; we would recommend you
to anyone and often do. You were also amazing during our mum's end-of-life care and made us feel loved and special. Bless you all.

I live some distance away from my aunt and it was very important to me to find a care home in her local area, that I trusted and was confident would provide her with the care and support she needed in her final years. I particularly appreciated that they focused on improving and maintaining her independence
and promoting her mental and physical well-being. They kept her active and stimulated, played to her strengths and used common sense in making everyday decisions with her. She really thrived in her first year there.
As my aunt's dementia progressed, the staff continued to be kind and to adapt their approach to meet her changing needs. When she became ill, and in her last weeks, they showed their sensitivity and experience in ensuring that she was comfortable and peaceful.
Throughout her time at Hopton, the staff kept in touch with me regularly, so I felt very involved despite only being able to visit every couple of months. I highly recommend Hopton Cottage Care Home.

Mum lived at Hopton Cottages for almost three years and we are grateful for the care and kindness during her stay. Making the decision is extremely difficult and we looked at several other homes before choosing Hopton. From reading the website to meeting the owner and staff it was clear that they knew
what prospective residents and relatives were going through. The visit, discussion at Mum’s home and transition were all handled well. The environment was homely and clean with staff who were very good at their job. We were well informed about activities going on at Hopton, choices at meal times and it was so nice to see pictures of Mum on the home website which added reassurance that she looked happy and part of the community. When finally the condition overcame her we were touched that the manager made time to join us at Mum’s funeral. So, a big thank you to all at Hopton Cottages for being both lovely and professional for the time Mum lived there. You do a hard job very well.

The professional care given by all at Hopton Cottage, to Mum, was delivered, with patience, kindness, respect and dignity at all times, her problems were dealt with sympathetically, never made to feel a burden. Fab Friday, entertainment with a glass of wine and nibbles is wonderful. Outings be it a
coffee shop, a stroll or a trip on the canal boat were always enjoyed. Meals were nourishingly homemade, tailored to her tolerances and palette. Clothes were quickly returned, and Mum felt smart it was important to her. A salon on-site means regular visits, which she enjoyed. The cleaning and maintenance staff were always helpful, they found time to chat with Mum while keeping Hopton spotless. Increasing dementia meant challenges, but the staff were patient, reducing anxiety. In Mum's last days, we were there more often and observed staff, their manner was always kind, and reassuring, never rushing or disregarding resident's needs. The staff were approachable, and always aware of the needs of families, Happy Hopton is very appropriate.

My mum was in Hopton Cottage Care Home from March 2017 to October 2023 when sadly she passed away. During this time the staff were amazing showing my mum lots of love and care, nothing was ever too much trouble. The home was always clean, meals were excellent, and there were lots of activities and entertainment
going on. During Covid the staff went over and above to make visiting for us when it was possible and always made it safe. During my mum's last weeks, the staff were so caring, nothing was too much trouble. This home is excellent throughout.

My brother has settled in very well at Hopton Cottage Care Home and gets on really well with the staff. Everybody is very caring towards him and are also very pleasant and chatty with any visitors too. The whole feeling when visiting is of a really well run and managed care home. They put on a wonderful
Coronation party for friends and family with activities for young children as well as entertainment for the not so young including a very tasty buffet. They also do celebratory afternoon teas in the home as well as taking residents to the local coffee shop which is much appreciated. My brother loves to read and is accumulating his own collection of books and now thanks to the staff he has a lovely bookcase to store them in.

The care provided by the staff is excellent and their dignity is always respected. There is a wide variety of activities and entertainment every day to keep them physically
and mentally active.
Communication between the home and family is also excellent.

My Uncle was always reluctant to even consider going into care, he made my sister and I promise never to let it happen so we struggled along for quite a while before pleading with him to give it a try. The outcome is that he is now much happier and his disposition is relaxed and content. He wouldn’t
go home now if he could (we’ve asked him). This home really is a ‘home’ and not just a residence, you feel it as soon as you walk in. Staff are so kind and genuinely care about each resident like a family member. My sister and I are so much happier too knowing he’s safe and getting five star care. Thank you Hopton Cottage Care Home x

The care my mum received at Hopton Cottage Care Home was outstanding! We moved Mum from a residential home that did not meet Mum's needs or care for her adequately. From the moment Mum crossed the threshold of Hopton Cottage she came back to us, she was happy again. With a smile to everyone she met,
Mum was treated with love, respect and kindness by all the staff, carers, managers, cleaners and chefs. Thank you to the Hopton Cottage team, can't recommend you all highly enough!

This care home is fantastic. My grandmother spent the last three and a half years of her life here. They made the last period of her life so comfortable and were so caring. Despite it being Covid19 during this time, they did an amazing job at entertaining her and making sure they have the best life.
I couldn't recommend this home enough!

Hopton Cottage Care Home is the best care home we viewed. We looked at five others and were very happy when my aunt was given a room. The kindness, compassion and respect shown by everyone at Hopton, from management to carers, are fantastic. The room with a garden and ensuite is wonderful. Every day
my aunt and myself are treated with kindness. The residents have lovely meals and entertainment every day and are well looked after. The best decision we made was to send her to this fantastic care home.

Thanks to the care home staff, Mum had fun and enjoyed her last year. Her room was lovely, not that she spent much time in it. Even though we weren't allowed to visit a lot of the time, we were confident Mum was being entertained and enjoying herself.
Reply from Ann Martin, Director at Hopton Cottage Care HomeThanks for these nice comments. As you say your Mum always enjoyed getting involved in different activities and goings-on. Although we obviously had to follow the guidance about visiting we have tried really hard to be as flexible as possible to allow family visits to continue as a priority and we are glad that you felt your Mum was happy and enjoying life despite the difficulties.

My sister-in-law went into Hopton Cottage during the Coronavuris pandemic so unfortunately, was unable to experience the full range of activities. She enjoyed being in the home and the staff looked after her very well, especially during the last few weeks of her life.
Reply from Joseph Martin, Director at Hopton Cottage Care HomeWe're really gratified to hear your sister-in-law enjoyed being with us and that her last final weeks were well-supported. Hopton Cottage Care Home impressed me the first time I saw it and was sure my mother would be happy there. Once she settled in she seemed to enjoy her stay. Every effort is made to see to it that the residents are comfortable and well cared for with plenty of activities. My mother's only complaint was
that she didn't always know what activities were taking place. The staff are great and mum got on really well with them. I would definitely recommend this care home.

Hopton Cottage Care Home provided a great level of service for the care of my parents. They offered care, compassion and dignity for both my Mother and Father who had totally different needs. My mother had Alzheimer’s which was extremely challenging at times, however, working with the Care Team and
through many conversations with buckets of patience and humour, Mum was able to stay with the home to the very end. She had a very close relationship and understanding with many of the care team and they worked extremely hard to make this happen and it allowed her personality to shine through to the end. My father had Parkinson’s Disease and despite his short tenure at the home, the team quickly bonded with him and made him feel at ease, providing a lovely end-of-life care to him. The home offered a unique arrangement allowing my parents to spend precious final times together. Hopton Cottage Care Home provides a great service and they work tirelessly to maintain it, I would highly recommend it.

All the staff were so caring with Dad. We're really pleased that we chose Hopton Cottage Care Home for Dad's final chapter of his life. He was so content and really enjoyed everything, from his room with a view, the food (especially the fish and chips and his multiple breakfasts), the staff who referred
to him as a legend and a real character and of course the other residents (especially being part of the gentlemen's club in Woodend followed by the fun he had in Riverside)

Mum lived at Hopton Cottage Care Home for just over two years. She was very happy there and extremely well looked after. The staff were very helpful and pleasant and friendly to us all. Mum's room was modern and bright and had a well-designed ensuite shower-room/toilet. She was able to personalise the
room with her own furniture. Her private patio was lovely for plants and feeding the birds. The food was excellent and lots of it! tea, coffee and cake always available - even for visitors! Fresh fruit and snacks available all day. Lots of organised activities each day as well as trips out. When Mum became frail, nothing was too much trouble. A special bed and air mattress was arranged and the care was excellent. I can highly recommend.

Mum was a resident at Hopton Cottage for the last two years. She was affected by dementia. The management and staff were able to deal with that. The individual rooms and en-suite bathroom are very nice. Mum was treated with dignity and respect. The facilities were good and the activities and entertainment
provided were varied and interesting. Mum took part in daily walks when she was able and trips out to Church or the garden centre or ice cream farm or local cafes. The staff were very caring. Mum started to have falls due to brain abnormality and faded away. At the later stages, she was moved to easily accessible room to continue access despite the Covid lockdown. Very grateful.

Current Review Score: 9.9 (9.900)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.9 (9.900) out of 10 for Hopton Cottage Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.9 out of 5 from 22 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 22 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.900 for Hopton Cottage Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (233 Excellents x 5) + (26 Goods x 4) ) ÷ 259 Ratings = 4.9
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Hopton Cottage Care Home is based on 22 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 62 registered maximum number of service users is 12.4, which has been reached with 22 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
