Hopton Cottage Care Home in Huddersfield achieved ‘Outstanding' in responsive care and ‘Good’ in the other four categories during the last inspection in June 2019.

The staff at Hopton Cottage Care Home believe that everyone's parent or relative should feel excited to go to their new home. Staff believe in giving residents a fun new life as they start a brand new chapter.

The team provides first-class, 24-hour residential care in a purpose-built home.

Hopton Cottage has three distinct neighbourhoods which enable them to best look after a person's exact needs whether they are: mentally sound, starting to be forgetful or for those who have more advanced dementia.

Hopton Cottage is in the perfect location, just 14 mins by car, from Huddersfield or Dewsbury. It is in a pretty part of Mirfield, surrounded by beautiful countryside.

The team at Hopton Cottage believe that your family member should be able to enjoy their own private luxury cottage room with en-suite shower, TV, DVD player, phone and internet access, access to a private garden, delicious food home-cooked daily by the chefs with locally sourced ingredients.

The home provides all residents with spacious and comfortable lounge areas and supports and encourages dignity and independence and offers a large program of events and fun activities to keep active and social according to individual tastes.

At Hopton Cottage, your relative can start to enjoy life again with the safety of experienced and qualified staff on hand 24-hours a day.

The staff team at Hopton Cottage believe that when your elderly relative moves into a care home instead of waiting, their enjoyment and quality of life improves a lot. It's Hopton Cottage's opinion that residents live longer too because their spirit is lifted. Staff get residents eating well again, make sure they take all their tablets each day and catch health issues early on, so more can be done to treat them.

Sending Mum to Hopton Cottage was the best decision we could have made for her. They took care of her as if she was one of their family and enhanced the last two years of her life. They gave us back some precious time to spend with her. She enjoyed all of the activities and in particular her trips out
to the local shops, which the staff regularly took her on frequently. Most of all, she enjoyed making it her job to keep the staff fully entertained and on their toes at all times!
In the last few days, the care they showed to us all as a family was second to none. We cannot thank the manager and the team in Woodend enough for giving us an extra two years with our dear mother.
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

My life long friend who was like an aunt to me was in Hopton care home for five years. She suffered from dementia but was always treated with care, respect and dignity. She was always given choices, nothing was presumed. She was well cared for and enjoyed the varied activities. I visited regularly (at
least once a week) never at a set day or time, and I always found her clean and comfortable. The staff are very patient, kind, caring and compassionate, and would regularly hug and comfort residents if needed. I hope if I ever need a care home, I can go to one with the same high standard as Hopton.
Reply from Joseph Martin, Director at Hopton Cottage Care HomeThank you so much for your wonderful review. We absolutely loved having her here, and your regular visits over so many years and miss seeing you. Reviews like yours from such cherished families and residents are our reason for coming in every day and giving it 100% every day to the service. All the best to you for the future.

My aunt lived in Hopton Cottages from 2014 to August 2020. She had lived in her marital home for 64 years so I did have concerns about the move. The staff managed her transition with such sensitivity and care settled she felt minimal confusion. She settled into Hopton Cottage quickly, and its' routine
and daily activities fast became familiar.
The whole team became her family and provided such care and support that my aunt felt safe and comfortable, Hopton Court became her 'home from home'. My aunt passed peacefully on August bank holiday, staff were at her side. I am so grateful that they were able to give her passing peace dignity.
I don't have one single negative comment about Hopton Cottage, its management or staff. If I could make only one comment it would be exemplary, or exceptional. I would recommend Hopton Cottage to anyone looking for a complete care package for their loved one.

My dearest mum moved to Hopton Cottage Care Home in January 2017 and lived there until her death in 2020. I was always impressed with the attitude and kindness of the staff. The residents were all treated as if they were being looked after by their relatives. Mum was always treated with dignity, and
the home offered many activities and entertainments to engage the residents. It was a very pleasing place to visit too.

I have known Hopton Cottage Care Home since September 2018 where my wife and I, who had Power of Attorney over an elderly couple who we have known for over forty years, needed a care home environment urgently due to a sudden decline in their health and mobility. It was imperative that we kept them together
as a couple and this presented the difficulty of finding a home that could take them both and care for their needs. This is when we found Hopton Cottage Care Home. Although the home did not have 'married' rooms, they were able to find two separate rooms and the couple were able to move in within a few days of each other. The manager was most helpful in ensuring the move went smoothly, and they settled into their new lives very quickly. The staff were thrilled to have their first married couple and did everything possible to ensure that they spent as much time together as they wanted - which included regular wheelchair journies between the two rooms. Sadly, the ladies health declined significantly over the next few months, requiring, frequent hospital stays and in-home care treatment. The staff were exemplary in helping to make her as comfortable as possible and even provided a belated Christmas dinner when she returned from a hospital stay over Christmas. It was in January 2019 when her health declined even further, and she passed away peacefully in the home. During this very difficult time, the staff once again showed not only professionalism but genuine love for our friend and her husband. The gentleman continued to stay at the home without his beloved wife and was cared for extremely well by the staff. Shortly after celebrating his 90th birthday in December 2019, he passed away in April 2020 following a short illness. This was an extremely difficult time as the coronavirus had closed the home to visitors, but we were kept informed of his progress and a care home senior was with him as he passed away. My wife and I visited the home on a regular basis and were always impressed with the level of care residents received. The "landmark" celebrations such as Christmas, Bonfire Night and the summer barbecue were a delight and enjoyed by everyone. My wife and I would be quite happy to put ourselves in their care should the need arise.

Mum was cared for with dignity, compassion and some fun. She came to accept Hopton as a home with the staff as caring friends. I was happy to see her safe, comfortable and stress free. When her end came, the Hopton staff were exemplary, kind to her and me, thoroughly professional and doing all they
could to make a hard time as smooth as possible. I was very happy with the care that mum received at Hopton.

My husband was resident in Hopton Cottage for over five years and was cared for with respect and compassion. From the moment he arrived, he settled in very quickly and was very happy in his new home. The catering was of a good standard and they also catered for his diabetic needs. The home was very
clean and did not emanate any unpleasant odours. Interaction with the patients was provided through various carers, including games, quizzes and keep fit. The weekly live music sessions also brought great interaction and response from the majority of residents.

It was necessary to find somewhere that would look after Dad professionally, with dignity and care. This place exceeded our expectations throughout the 19 months he was there. Close enough for friends to visit. The ethos is that this was his home. He made his decisions and led his life much like in
his former house. However, in complete safety. The joy of calling in to find Dad engrossed in a book sat in his chair by the window - with two young carers /companions working towards their carers' qualifications, sat thoughtfully with him, engrossed in their own study. How comforting that this was possible. This care home and its managers are truly amazing. The staffing ratio is so good. They aim to employ those who can care professionally. One is spoilt for choice with the range of personalities that are encompassed. All with such exemplary gifts as individuals. It is not an easy vocation, caring. It needs to be recognised and valued for its own worth. At Hopton is certainly the case.

My father moved into Hopton Cottage care home 7 months ago when, at 92, he was becoming increasingly frail. From the day of admission to the day of his death, the staff were wonderful. Always approachable, they quickly got to know us as a family.
All the staff, from cleaning staff, carers to managers,
treated Dad with kindness and their care was outstanding. It was a great relief to us that they could care for him in his final days and no hospital admissions were necessary. There was always someone to talk to if I had any worries.
The home was always spotlessly clean and very homely and the residents were treated with dignity.
I felt my dad was safe, comfortable and he was able to enjoy the company.
I will miss visiting and seeing the lively staff.
Reply from Joseph Martin, Director at Hopton Cottage Care HomeJanet, thank you so much for your wonderful review. Your dad was a lovely man and we loved having him at Hopton Cottage. My mother moved to Hopton Cottage at very short notice after she ended up in a very poor care home, (which had the same CQC rating of GOOD as Hopton Cottage, so those inspection ratings don't tell you everything). The director visited mum immediately and was able to move her to Hopton the next day.
My mum was so well cared for by devoted staff teams. Every minor request was responded to immediately, from cups of tea, to radios, to fixing squeaky door closers. Even the electrician called her by her first name when he came to do a repair. My sister and I were given lunches ourselves whilst we were caring for mum - a godsend when we were stressed. Communication from the staff was updated daily. The end of life care was as good as any hospice. Mum's pain was expertly managed and titrated to be as gentle as possible. We will never be able to thank the staff enough for the deep caring and a fitting end to mum's life, when it could have been a terrible ending at the other home. Thank you so much.
Reply from Joseph Martin, Director at Hopton Cottage Care HomeDear Rosalind, Thank you so much for your touching review. We have shared this review with our team and it has had a real impact. We are very lucky to have a committed and competent team who are motivated by helping others and achieving the kind of standards of care that we feel families deserve. To know we are helping real people in this way is truly heartwarming for us all. It was a pleasure looking after your mum and knowing you all as a family. Very best wishes from all at Hopton. Mum sadly passed away three months after moving to Hopton Cottage Care, but in that brief time, she not only received the highest level of care I could have hoped for, she received genuine warmth and affection which I know meant a great deal to her. The staff were wonderful, nothing was too much trouble
and they showed high respect and interest in all dealings with Mum and family. I cannot speak more highly of Hopton Care, they made such a difference to Mum's last few months and also to family.

My mother has been a resident for 2 years. In that time I have had only praise for all aspects of her care. My mother was a 'picky' eater and we worried that food would be a problem. I have never heard her complain and according to the staff she eats without any problems. All members of staff treat
her with respect and will sit and chat. They will all discuss with members of the family if there are any issues or if they want to tell us of something mum has done. We, as a family, struggled with the idea of a care home for mum but we couldn't be happier that she is content where she is.

My 80year old mum has been a permanent resident November 2016 following 6months of intermittent respite care.
Mum suffers from Dementia but as yet does not need the intense care of the onsite Dementia unite and therefore lives in the care side.

The home is like a 5-star hotel. Spacious, contemporary

furnished rooms with ensuite wet/shower room. Small private terrace looking onto the well cared for gardens. I have never had a minutes regret regarding mums care, everyone is kind, courtious, friendly and caring.
Good, well-prepared food (plenty of choice) and a wide range of activities.
As a relative, I also feel very well informed and included in all choices regarding mums care.

Current Review Score: 9.9 (9.900)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.9 (9.900) out of 10 for Hopton Cottage Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.9 out of 5 from 22 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 22 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.900 for Hopton Cottage Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (233 Excellents x 5) + (26 Goods x 4) ) ÷ 259 Ratings = 4.9
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Hopton Cottage Care Home is based on 22 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 62 registered maximum number of service users is 12.4, which has been reached with 22 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
