My mum recently stayed at St Catherine's for what was supposed to be a week's respite while her live-in carer was on a break. We had to bring her home after two days as she was so unhappy. Everything we were told would happen did not and the care plan was not followed. She had no company, no-one played
games with her, and she was not allowed to go into the garden despite repeated assurances prior to her stay that she would be. In her words, she had a "nasty time". It was a big decision to bring mum to St Catherine's and we only did so following a lot of reassurance. Had we known what it would actually be like versus what we were promised, we would never have done it. It makes no sense not to tell people the truth. Another care home told us they were not the right place for mum and I wish St Catherine's had been more courageous and told us this too.
Reply from Peter Doyle, Operations Manager at St Catherines ViewThank you for your review following your mothers free trial stay at St Catherines View. We are sorry that we did not meet your expectations. The free trial at the home was arranged with a view to helping the family identify an appropriate home for regular respite stays to allow your mother's live-in carer to take a break; I am sorry that we were not able to be part of this support plan longer term.
I believe the home did provide a comprehensive level of care. In our correspondence with you, we have outlined the companionship and 121 support provided to your mother during her 48-hour stay at the home and conveyed the challenges surrounding the isolation period and access to the gardens within the home. Additionally, we have shared the changes to visiting and isolation that have been implemented following the update to the government guidance.
I hope the response provided helped to reassure you of the support provided to your mother during her stay.

My mother moved from a previous care home to St Catherines View in July 2017, so she has been living there for nearly four years. My daughter and I live in Brighton, and with I alone or the two of us, visited her once a month until March 2020 when Covid-19 hit. We have only now been able to visit her,
as we don't drive, and we also had to be ultra-careful because my daughter-in-law was shielding. In that lockdown period, I rang or emailed St Catherines View regularly, and we made little films that we sent to the team for playing to my mother. The staff have been outstanding.

My wife was admitted on 22-2-21. Our experience has been very good, apart from some confusion resulting from her two weeks stay in the hospital, which led to debate and compromise over visiting arrangements now resolved - thank you.
Reply from Vanda Baker, Home Manager at St Catherines ViewThank you for your kind review. I am pleased to read that you are likely to recommend the home and scored St Catherines View so positively. I appreciated your understanding and cooperation around visiting, an area that has been subject to much change over the last few months. Throughout the national pandemic, we have followed Public Health guidance facilitating visits in line with this guidance. I am pleased that we are now in a position to support routine visiting, and you have been able to spend good quality time with your wife at the home.”

My mum took up residence at the care home a few weeks before lockdown. It has been extremely hard over the last 6 months not being able to visit her as would normally be expected. But I fully backed the decision to lockdown early, and that was a wise decision, together with the restrictions on keeping
staff from moving between care homes. Relatives were regularly updated via newsletters, emails, phone calls, video calls throughout. The staff were wonderful. Professional, and extremely caring. Nothing was too much trouble. She had the best care, companionship, friendship she could have had in her time at the care home. Nearing the end, all the staff were amazing, particularly the nursing staff who were constantly monitoring to keep her comfortable.
No words can really express how much I can thank them for their dedication and superhuman hard work during these past 6 months.

The staff are well trained, friendly, caring and understand dementia. The home is managed within strict guidelines and there are regular reviews with the family.
The building and gardens are well designed providing good surveillance and security which is essential for dementia care but still feeling
homely.
Food and drinks appear appetizing and is always available.
Personal care is a sensitive issue and in our experience, my mother's personal care was only carried out by a few familiar faces.
My mother's appearance was important to her. This was understood by her carers and she was always smartly dressed and her hair kept neat and tidy by the visiting hairdresser.
The policy of grouping residents in small groups with their own lounge and staff gives familiarisation and comfort for residents.
My mother's dementia could not be cured, but the staff at St Catherines View managed my mother's condition and gave her the best quality of life in her final years.

This is undoubtedly a top-class care home, expertly run with excellent staff. The support and care of residents are of the highest standard and the staff is brilliant. They are very good-natured, welcoming, professional and extremely helpful and supportive of all residents and visitors. I could not
recommend the home more highly.

My mother in law moved into St Catherines last year. We have been very happy with her care. The staff have been extremely welcoming to all our family when we visit and which helped the difficult transition from living at home to living in a care home.
The care staff have a warm and comforting approach
with my mother in law and she clearly seems settled and happy at St Catherines.
There is strong leadership from the clinical lead which has meant that any questions have been actioned quickly.

We had been through a very traumatic time finding the right home for our mum. A home that could cope with her needs. It was evident from the day our mum arrived at St Catherines View that she was going to get the care she needed. The staff are so passionate, caring and patient with the residents and
with us as the family, we became very close to some of the carers during mum's year with St Catherines View.
The staff are what makes St Catherines View a truly special place and we feel lucky that our mum was able to be cared for there. Thank you.

This home is excellent - my husband's Godmother moved here after we became unhappy with the treatment at her previous home. They managed to reassure her about the quality of life and all the staff went beyond the call of duty to look after her beautifully. Sadly she was only with them for six weeks
but her 'end of life' care was dealt with professionally and compassionately. They kept us extremely well informed at all times of any developments. Having experienced several care homes over the last couple of years St Catherine's View gets top marks, 10 out of 10.

My husband came to St Catherines View, for two weeks respite. I have been very impressed by the professional approach by the manager, her deputy and all the staff in caring for my husband, who at the time, can be difficult and demanding. They have gone the extra mile to ensure he has been kept occupied
throughout the day, with a wide variety of activities to suit his needs. He has enjoyed his stay, with kind and thoughtful attention from staff, a pleasant room and surroundings with an attractive garden. I also have always felt welcome and found the staff helpful and supportive. I am so pleased to have discovered St Catherines View.

St Catherines View continues to exceed all my expectations. The staff are all kind, supportive and with an almost inexhaustible supply of patience. I am specifically impressed by the nursing team, the carers and especially by the standard of the cooking which far exceeds those on other care homes of
which we are familiar.
Special mention must be made of the activities team. A huge improvement in the last couple of months with visits to residents to both involve and encourage them. Music therapist is outstanding.

All the staff at St Catherines View appeared to be happy in their work and always took the time to say hello to relatives. They seemed to care about the residents and treated them with great care and compassion. The cleaners, kitchen staff, laundry etc were all the same and very helpful.
The only thing,
negative to say is I would have liked to have been informed earlier just how ill with dementia my mother was. She sadly died earlier this month.
Reply from Elaine Farrer, Operations Director at St Catherines ViewThank you for your review and for your kind words and excellent scores in each and every aspect of your mothers care. It's never an exact science to know when a resident is taking a turn for the worse but I know that the team were in contact with you and the GP spoke to you to explain how poorly your mother was. It is always such a distressing time for a family. I understand that you were able to be with your mother as she passed away peacefully. Please accept our condolences at this sad time.

Current Review Score: 10.0 (9.965)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 10 (9.965) out of 10 for St Catherines View is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 5.0 out of 5 from 22 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 22 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.965 for St Catherines View is calculated as follows: ( (251 Excellents x 5) + (9 Goods x 4) ) ÷ 260 Ratings = 4.965
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for St Catherines View is based on 22 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 57 registered maximum number of service users is 11.4, which has been reached with 22 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
