My father has been a resident in Birch Lodge for four years and we have been so grateful for the wonderful care and love he has received from the staff. Nearly all the staff have been here the whole time and this says so much about the excellent care they provide. Communication with us about our father is really good, also. Dad could not be in a better place!

We moved my 99 year old father from Devon to West Hall after his wife passed away. This was a major upheaval for him and required sensitivity. From the start the communication and understanding was exemplary, we were kept informed by a particular staff member throughout about the likely availability of a room in Oak Lodge. As soon as one became free she informed us straight away and made the necessary arrangements with the minimum of fuss. My father has now been at West Hall for nearly three months and has settled in really well. The staff could not be more helpful or pleasant and he is really enjoying the attention and company at the lodge! My sisters and I would highly recommend West Hall-there is plenty of opportunity to go for walks in the beautiful grounds and to enjoy some lovely food at the bistro with my dad!

When I first arrived at the care home I felt straight away a sense of calm and lovely ambience. Was the biggest decision I had to make to put my lovely husband into care, but I know I made the right choice. From day one, nothing was too much trouble for the lovely caring and compassionate staff. The beautiful grounds, lovely food and services on offer were all I could have asked for. Very happy with my choice.

My mum moved into West Hall three weeks ago and it has all been going very well so far. The facilities are lovely any the care staff are excellent - Mum is looking so much better already. The activities are very good and there is a variety of things to do to keep Mum busy. She's also been on some trips out and been enjoying the entertainers and games. The food is excellent - I've had lunch with Mum in the bistro which was great. Today Mum told me "There's never a dull moment" at West Hall.

In Oak Lodge, lift has been out of action twice for more than 96 hours within last 10 months, inconveniencing residents and staff.
The maintenance contract should have specified 24 emergency cover and availability of all parts within UK. Management failed to keep residents informed of progress.

Bedmakers should be retrained to leave 8 inches of top sheet overhang at bed end to allow 4 inches to be tucked below mattress.

Reply from Katherine Mahoney, Manager at West Hall

Thank you for taking the time to review West Hall and we are sorry to see the issues highlighted and thank you for taking the time to discuss these. The lift in our Oak Lodge was operational however there was an issue with the button on the top floor, which required a member of our team to support...

My husband spent one week in respite care and as he has communication difficulties and can neither read nor write it is hard to get his true thoughts on his stay. Speaking with him daily on his direct phone line he always seemed very happy, cheerful and extremely positive. There was never a derogatory comment about anything. When I collected him at the end of his week he said he had really enjoyed his holiday and would be happy to come again! From my perspective he had been well cared for in his personal appearance and clothing. Overall very happy.

I initially arranged for a three-week respite at West Hall but extended this twice, staying a total of six weeks. During this time I had an excellent and rewarding experience. The staff were efficient, hard-working and most importantly, very caring. The facility was clean, well-maintained and had a very comfortable feel throughout its numerous rooms. Organised activities were well attended and very interesting. Overall I highly recommend West Hall to anyone who has a need for residential care, not only for respite, but for those people needing full-time care as well.

Paula Rifai
Paula RifaiJob Title:General ManagerJoined: 2025

I’m writing to introduce myself as the new General Manager of West Hall. I have had the privilege of working in the care sector for the past 35 years, and during this time, I have grown both professionally and personally. My journey started as a Carer, and through dedication and passion, I advanced to Senior Carer, Head of Care, Deputy Manager, and Acting Manager, before ultimately becoming a Registered Manager. For the past 26 years, I have been a Registered Manager with various care companies, where I have had the opportunity to achieve outstanding results, including two excellent outcomes and a "Good" rating with an Outstanding "Well Led" outcome in my previous care home.

Throughout my career, I’ve embraced every opportunity to enhance my skills and qualifications, ensuring that I meet the evolving standards and regulations required for this role. I joined Anchor in January 2023 as the Registered Care Home Manager for Moore Place, where I was thrilled to lead the team to achieve the top score of 10 on independent website carehome.co.uk. Our hard work paid off when Moore Place was ranked among the Top 20 Care Homes in the South East in 2024.

I am excited to take on the role of General Manager for West Hall. I am looking forward to working with the dedicated team here, getting to know the residents and their families, and leading West Hall to new heights. My vision is to work collaboratively with everyone, ensuring that we provide the highest standard of care and continue to thrive as a home.

Gary Dunn
Gary DunnJob Title:Deputy General ManagerJoined: 2025

It is my privilege to introduce myself as your new Deputy General Manager of West Hall. I have been working in the care sector for the past 10 years with my journey starting in my hometown of Swindon, where I worked in domiciliary care while maintaining the CQC Outstanding rating.

The wealth of experience and knowledge gained led me to continue with my passion to work within this sector. I moved to Surrey in 2019 and gained a position within Anchor as Team Leader at Moore Place. Throughout this time, I have seen many changes, working with a talented, and passionate team which we ensured Moore Place was recognised as a CQC “Good” rated care home in 2022 and Top 20 Care Home for the South East in 2024. For the past 12 months I have been in an Acting Deputy Manager role, successfully overseeing operational changes and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards.

This new chapter in my career at West Hall is an exciting opportunity, not only to work alongside such an outstanding team but also establishing a good rapport with residents and families alike.

I look forward to meeting you all and to continue the success of West Hall.

Sophie Waite
Sophie WaiteJob Title:Wellbeing ManagerJoined: 2025

I joined West Hall as the Wellbeing Manager in April 2025, and I’m thrilled to be part of such an incredible team. I graduated with a Drama degree in 2014 and began my career in care in February 2018. Since then, I’ve worked with a few different care providers, gaining valuable experience along the way. I truly believe I have the best job and have never looked back.

In addition to my experience, I commission the activities department for a new build care home, building close relationships with residents and their families, and ensuring the activity programme was designed to best support residents’ wellbeing and engagement.

During my time in care, I’ve been able to apply my creative skills to develop engaging and inclusive activity programmes. I’ve planned and organised a wide range of events and activities, including summer parties, Bonfire Night celebrations, archery sessions, Cognitive Stimulation Therapy sessions for residents living with dementia, and a unique ‘12 Weeks Around the World’ programme where residents virtually explore different countries through their culture, food, music, and traditions.

I’m passionate about delivering one-to-one activities and engagement to ensure we meet every resident’s needs, especially creating programmes tailored for those living with dementia. The most rewarding part of my role is building personal connections with residents and their families, which allows me to tailor activities that reflect the interests and preferences of everyone living in the home.

Mark Wren
Mark WrenJob Title:Services ManagerJoined: 2017

I am the Services Manager at Anchor West Hall and have been in this role since the beginning of January 2024, overseeing several departments which include catering, housekeeping, maintenance and activities. Supporting my colleagues and interacting with the residents here are the highlights of my day, and I couldn’t ask for a more picturesque location to work in; the manor house and grounds of West Hall are truly exquisite.

Overseeing the Hospitality and services of the home gives me the opportunity to work collaboratively with each head of department, ensuring that West Hall does not just meet the needs of the residents, but exceeds them every day by providing the level of care and service that our CQC rating of ‘Outstanding’ truly deserves.
