Nestled in a quiet residential area of St John’s, near Colchester in Essex, beautiful St Fillans Care Home provides a variety of long-term and respite care, including residential, residential dementia, nursing, nursing dementia and end of life care.

With over 30 years’ experience in designing and building care homes, Excelcare has a wealth of knowledge when creating a home from home. As a purpose-built care home, which first opened its doors in 2012, St Fillans was built with comfort, safety and a personal approach to care in mind.

With bright airy lounges and dining rooms, spacious en-suite bedrooms and a variety of different welcoming spaces, which are used by residents and visitors, the design of the home supports comfortable living in beautiful surroundings.

The kind and compassionate team members live in the local community, coming from nearby areas such as Highwoods and Greenstead. They take great pride in caring for the people who live here, just like a loving family. As you would expect from a family-owned and run company, they also provide a friendly, listening ear for residents’ loved ones, too.

At St Fillans, the team are dedicated to ensuring everyone leads a full, active and happy life with an abundance of opportunities to enjoy the things they love, whilst being supported to try new things, too. The Lifestyle Coordinator, supported by the wider care team, hosts a range of group and one-to-one activities throughout the week, meaning there is always something fun going on.

My father is in another, more expensive, care home where the environment and care standards are not as good as St Fillians. Mother feels like she's in a good hotel and has settled in well. They cope kindly with her dementia and physical incapabilities. This gives my sister and me confidence. They have
also facilitated us having family birthday parties in a small reception room. This is so appreciated.

Residents are very well taken care of but activities are limited and there is no individual stimulation.

Thank you for your positive review, I am sorry that you do not feel there is enough stimulation for your mother on a 1.1 basis perhaps next time you visit you could ask to meet with the lifestyles co-ordinator so they can discuss this with you in more detail and arrange for your mother to receive some additional 1.1 activity.

On the whole, we have been very pleased with the home. Sometimes, the communication could be better on handovers between staff. The ordering of prescriptions could be made easier if a chemist more local to the home was used, as the chemist is not easy to access and new medications can take up to a week
to get, which is not really good enough. However, all staff appear to treat residents and relatives with kindness and dignity.

My dad was a strong independent man. He was difficult to care for in his last few months. This hospice cared for him greatly and I saw only affection on the few times that I visited. I am forever grateful to them.

With all the negative views heard about care homes on the news we soon had our fears removed. When we first walked into the reception the atmosphere was welcoming yet professional, everyone was so attentive to Mums needs. We were then taken to Mum's room, we the family, had no feeling of fear leaving
her in their care, from the lead nurses, office staff and all other staff. The way they looked after Mum with so much love and care, were there for us the family, ready to put an arm around us, explaining what was happening to Mum, nothing was too much trouble. To us, the family, the care was outstanding. We have nothing but praise for them. We spent many hours between us at the end and were always made welcome with Mum ending her life with dignity.

My mother was only a resident of St Fillans for 2 weeks before she sadly passed away. The care and compassion that all members of staff at the home gave could not be faulted. Nothing was too much trouble and there was always someone available to talk to or see to mum's needs.

My mother has been resident at St Fillans Care Centre for three years after short period of respite care. The home has improved since the current manager took charge. The home is modern and welcoming. There are a variety of entertainment and other "hobby" groups. Food is good. Carers are very caring.

St Fillans, in my opinion, is a lovely nursing care home. The thing that I like the most about this establishment is the staff and their caring friendly attitude. If my sister or family ever have a slight worry or concern it is always dealt with quickly and resolved satisfactorily.
There are daily
activities which try to accommodate all the residents' needs. This is an ongoing programme to find more things that the residents would enjoy.

My mother has been in St Fillans for the last 4 weeks. I have been very impressed with the individualised care and support. Excellent facilities, always very clean and tidy. All staff work in a gentle person-centred manner, it has a wonderful atmosphere. Staff and management take ownership and work

The first thing to strike me was how welcoming and friendly the staff all were. Very approachable. The home had a happy and pleasant atmosphere and nothing seemed too much trouble. The residents were in the company of staff who were interacting with them. There were activities and staff made all efforts

There has been a lot of improvements over the last year, lots more activities. I went to relatives meeting and lots of good things are going to happen, what the manager says does happen.
This wasn't the case in the past. All the staff are wonderful as my daughter has been at St Fillans for 4 years
we have seen many changes, but the care has been constant. My daughter loves the staff and it's lovely when I have to leave I know she is well looked after.

I recall attending a relatives meeting at St Fillans in June of this year, soon after the arrival of the new care home manager. At the time there was an acknowledgement that there was a need to improve standards across the home.
Whilst its still early days, I am pleased to say that there has already
been a noticeable improvement in standards across the home.
In my view, there is now a more 'homely' feel around the place and I particularly appreciate the renewed warmth, kindness and care shown to my aunt and uncle.
Thank you to everyone involved in achieving this improvement and please keep it going.

Anu is also known for a passion for enriching the lives of the people living at St Fillans Care Home and their loved ones and is full of enthusiasm and ideas. She is a passionate listener and puts her head and heart into everything she does. Anu was the winner of a proud Nurse of the Year award and is a career and technology enthusiast too.


Out of work, Anu is a mum of three and her interests include reading and trying interior decoration in her own home.
