Nestled in a quiet residential area of St John’s, near Colchester in Essex, beautiful St Fillans Care Home provides a variety of long-term and respite care, including residential, residential dementia, nursing, nursing dementia and end of life care.

With over 30 years’ experience in designing and building care homes, Excelcare has a wealth of knowledge when creating a home from home. As a purpose-built care home, which first opened its doors in 2012, St Fillans was built with comfort, safety and a personal approach to care in mind.

With bright airy lounges and dining rooms, spacious en-suite bedrooms and a variety of different welcoming spaces, which are used by residents and visitors, the design of the home supports comfortable living in beautiful surroundings.

The kind and compassionate team members live in the local community, coming from nearby areas such as Highwoods and Greenstead. They take great pride in caring for the people who live here, just like a loving family. As you would expect from a family-owned and run company, they also provide a friendly, listening ear for residents’ loved ones, too.

At St Fillans, the team are dedicated to ensuring everyone leads a full, active and happy life with an abundance of opportunities to enjoy the things they love, whilst being supported to try new things, too. The Lifestyle Coordinator, supported by the wider care team, hosts a range of group and one-to-one activities throughout the week, meaning there is always something fun going on.

Please don’t hesitate to contact should you wish any further information, the friendly team are always happy to help.

This home really feels like a home. My mother is well known and genuinely loved. She is always clean and presentable. Even as she declines, she has activities she can enjoy. Care has been appropriate to her needs, even with significant changes. We feel listened to when we have queries or concerns. The
home is always very clean, no smells. Food and drink is top notch.

Always a pleasant welcome from all staff when I come and visit my mother in law. Polite & friendly staff. Always clean & fresh. Lovely decorated for themes of Halloween to make it as homely as they can for residents. Lovely to see all the activities listed as you come in to see what planned for the
month. All staff keep you informed about whats going on with residents. They have activities booked in for residents to go out or come in for them, eg (they had baby goats). She enjoyed the trip to the seaside for chips. Mother in law seem happy & content.

Myself and my family are so grateful to all the staff at St Fillans for everything they did to ensure my Nan's time here was comfortable and dignified. She was well cared for and always treated with love, kindness and respect. The staff were always welcoming and friendly when we visited, and we were
kept well informed throughout Nans stay. When Nan passed away, the staff were so supportive, guiding us with sensitivity and reassurance. The genuine care for both Nan and our family went beyond what we could have hoped for, and made a hard time easier.

Lovely home, mum was well looked after and had a wonderful time. Activities are on all the time, they focused on mums routine and took account of her likes and dislikes. Mum was not keen to go but once there had a great holiday, and even said she would be happy to go again. The manager is a gem. The
recent fate was lovely as well, they all work so hard to make sure all residents are catered for with hobbies. One big thing was all mums clothes came home no lost items or unknown items appeared this is credit to how they value the people.

My mum receives expert care at St Fillans, but more importantly she is treated like an individual and her personal preferences are acknowledged and respected. The staff are fantastic and full of love for the residents they care for. I feel happy in the knowledge my mum is safe and looked after as I

Any requests or issues are swiftly dealt with by management and they are constantly looking for feedback and engagement from families. Thank you!

Mum has been in a few care homes and St Fillans is by far the best. From the moment you walk in the front door you are greeted by such friendliness by all the staff. Nothing is too much for them and they will do anything to help. Relatives and friends are encouraged to join in the entertainment and
I'm always advised and consulted about any medical issues. To me the home is like a 5* hotel and couldn't think of anywhere better for my mum.

My husband was sent to St Fillans after a stay at Colchester Hospital, how lucky were we..from day 1 to the time he passed on 12/5/25 the care was outstanding. From the top management to the highly trained nurses to the care staff , the receptionists ,and the lovely ladies who serviced the rooms .my
family and I were always greeted with a smile no matter what time we arrived .Living in Clacton it would have been much easier for him to be there ,but not once did we mind the journey. So thank you St Fillans just a pity not all care homes are as good as you.

I would recommend St Fillans Care Home to everyone. The care for my husband has been amazing for the last sixteen months. I cannot fault all the staff from the nurses, carers, cleaners, kitchen laundry, admin and entertainment, they are all caring, friendly, welcoming and professional.
The home is
beautifully decorated, with specific decorations for each season, Christmas, Valentine's Day, Easter etc.
The entertainment is exceptional with a variety of different activities throughout the whole year which is enjoyed by all the residents.

as we are finding it. We feel lucky Dad has been placed in your care so thank you all.

Current Review Score: 9.9 (9.891)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.9 (9.891) out of 10 for Excelcare St Fillans Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.9 out of 5 from 22 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 21 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.891 for Excelcare St Fillans Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (239 Excellents x 5) + (10 Goods x 4) + (9 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 258 Ratings = 4.891
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Excelcare St Fillans Care Home is based on 21 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 71 registered maximum number of service users is 14.2, which has been reached with 21 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
