Nestled in a quiet residential area of St John’s, near Colchester in Essex, beautiful St Fillans Care Home provides a variety of long-term and respite care, including residential, residential dementia, nursing, nursing dementia and end of life care.

With over 30 years’ experience in designing and building care homes, Excelcare has a wealth of knowledge when creating a home from home. As a purpose-built care home, which first opened its doors in 2012, St Fillans was built with comfort, safety and a personal approach to care in mind.

With bright airy lounges and dining rooms, spacious en-suite bedrooms and a variety of different welcoming spaces, which are used by residents and visitors, the design of the home supports comfortable living in beautiful surroundings.

The kind and compassionate team members live in the local community, coming from nearby areas such as Highwoods and Greenstead. They take great pride in caring for the people who live here, just like a loving family. As you would expect from a family-owned and run company, they also provide a friendly, listening ear for residents’ loved ones, too.

At St Fillans, the team are dedicated to ensuring everyone leads a full, active and happy life with an abundance of opportunities to enjoy the things they love, whilst being supported to try new things, too. The Lifestyle Coordinator, supported by the wider care team, hosts a range of group and one-to-one activities throughout the week, meaning there is always something fun going on.

Mum recently came to St Fillans for respite while our father has an operation. She has been to the nursing home before and we have always found staff to be attentive, kind and responsive to our questions or suggestions. Mum is on St John's wing and we can honestly say that all members of staff we have
come into contact with have been helpful, friendly and knowledgeable about Mum's needs. During this most recent stay, we have been so pleased that Mum has been able to be involved in the numerous activities going on around the home. Thanks to the team, she has participated in a wide variety of things this week and we have been able to see her on social media enjoying them when we cannot be there to see them ourselves. This is a real reassurance to us all to know that she is being motivated and engaged in purposeful things. We would definitely recommend St Fillans and thank all the staff on St John's ward and the home as a whole for caring for her so well.

I visited my friend at the care home last month, and I just wanted to share my experience there.
I felt pleased by what I saw there. I mean the staff's behaviour and approach towards the residents were so admirable. They were calm and attentive towards them. Even the residents seemed like they were
having a great time and had no issues at all. They were friendly with me too. I felt delighted throughout my chats. I didn't feel like a stranger at all. And something worth mentioning is the way they've kept the whole place neat!
I believe they're all really hard-working and well-coordinated. It is probably what made me feel cosy even though it was my first visit there. Everything was so right and perfect. Their commitment to their duty actually inspired me.

Mum did a respite stay at St Fillans, and we cannot recommend the care enough. The team of staff was very caring and understanding. The management acted very quickly to facilitate the admission. There were a lot of activities, and the facilities were outstanding. The home appeared clean and tidy always,
and the food was great.

My dad has recently moved into St Fillans and settled in very well. The staff are friendly, and the home is very clean. Management is very approachable, and my dad is taking part in activities I never thought he would; my dad is very happy.

St Fillans is a very clean, warm, loving home. Staff go above and beyond, and it's so nice to see my dad smile again. My mother is a resident here due to being of sound mind but arthritis and mobility problems meant I could no longer care for her. The staff here do a wonderful job with her and all the residents, fortunately now restrictions are lifting they have entertainers able to come in. The home is kept beautifully
clean and the garden is nice to sit in. The jubilee celebrations were excellent well done to the Lifestyle Coordinator and all the staff for their hard work on the 2 days.

Our choice of your care home was based on the excellent reviews seen online and the reputation that we have known about for some time. My wife visited the home some years ago while working as a community nurse and stated that it was very well run and that all the residents appeared very happy. I found

My mum has very recently moved into St Fillans as her care needs have increased due to worsening dementia. The staff have been amazing. Allowed me in the day before Mum's move to make her room personalised, so familiar when Mum arrived. Mum appears to have settled well and loves her new room and area.

An absolutely beautiful nursing home that was recommended to me by a friend. It has been newly redecorated and looks fantastic. Always clean and smells fresh. My dad was a resident at St Fillans until his passing. From day one, he was looked after so well. His confusion at being in a care home was handled so well, and he settled in very well. The care staff on his unit were just amazing, and I will be forever thankful to them for giving my dad the care and

A wonderful and caring home, can't rate the staff and care given highly enough. They treat all residents with dignity, engage with them and keep ourselves as relatives fully informed. I feel fully involved in my wife's care and know when I can't be with her, she is well looked after. Whilst my wife
is now very poorly, she recognises St Fillans as her home and as an ex-nurse, herself, knows this is where she would want to be under the circumstances.

Mum moved to St Fillans after being in a few different care settings where she had been unhappy and not settled. She was resistant to staying in residential care, having worked in the sector for many years and actually on the site of St Fillans. We left her there with heavy hearts, but within hours,
staff reported she was settled and happy, keeping them busy! Since then, we have been regularly updated with news and photos of Mum, and although we have been unable to visit, we are satisfied that the staff meet her needs in a way that she can still express her individuality and personality. Mum has a complex health profile needing a special diet, and she is profoundly deaf. Staff and other residents communicate effectively with Mum, and she is involved with activities that she was unable to access before. The staff on the unit go above and beyond to provide a homely experience for residents. I recommend St Fillans to anyone looking for specialist dementia care.

The staff are well trained, their communication is incredible, the meals that the residents get are superb and catered to their needs, the activities are based around what the residents wish to participate in, there's always more than one activity going on. Every room is fully equipped with its own
bathroom for privacy and dignity. There's no I in team, the clients that require it get 1:1 support - 24 hours a day depending on there own individual requirements. This is one home that I've worked in and couldn't praise it enough. The environment and the units are always clean and you can see how hard the cleaners work to ensure that infection control is met.

St Fillans Care Homr is an amazing Care facility, they looked after my dad for 4 years and they brought out the very best in him, he was very well cared for, the staff are absolutely amazing and like “family” we honestly couldn’t have asked for better care, we had absolute peace of mind that dad was
happy, treated with respect and loved. The activities that are arranged are extensively varied and targeted at the residents needs and ability, amazing.
I would and have recommended St Fillans to anyone looking for a true “home” from home for their loved one.
We as a family will be forever grateful to the amazing staff we have had the pleasure of knowing over the last 4 years.

Fantastic caring staff and management Team. The food is excellent and rooms are kept spotlessly clean. Anumol comes with more than a decade of nursing and management experience in both the public and private sectors. Anu is also known for a passion for enriching the lives of the people living at St Fillans Care Home and their loved ones and is full of enthusiasm and ideas. She is a passionate listener and puts her head and heart into everything she does. Anu was the winner of a proud Nurse of the Year award and is a career and technology enthusiast too.


Out of work, Anu is a mum of three and her interests include reading and trying interior decoration in her own home.
