We were very apprehensive as to how the move from another care home would affect mum. We need not have been concerned as, because of the excellent care and attention she has received, she has quickly settled and accepted her new home. She is relaxed and much happier than she has been in a long time.
She loves joining in with all the activities and is pleased to have made new friends. We now feel that mum's needs are being met and her quality of life has improved. It has been great to share so many laughs with mum since she has moved to Pemberley.

Life at Pemberley is very comfortable - good personal care and nursing requirements are met. The food is excellent, with a good variety of menus but I would prefer the supper time to be a bit later. I have noticed a change lately in the atmosphere and attitude of the staff, and it all seems much friendlier.


There are now more activities and I join in those which particularly appeal to me. My accommodation is excellent, especially the wet room and I am very comfortable there. I have recently purchased an electric wheelchair, which fits perfectly into my room, and has given me back a great deal of independence.

Too many changes of management. Too many agency staff - improving at present. Not enough mental/physical stimulation due to insufficient staff. Not enough regular staff on units - moved too often so no consistency for residents. Care staff very caring and gentle, often don't have time for one to one
with residents. Hospitality staff in short supply.

The main problem is that there are too few regular carers. Even if there are four on duty there are at least three residents that need assistance from two or three carers. When this happens those needing toileting or a drink just have to wait until someone becomes available. There is usually a relative
willing to make tea etc. This is not a criticism of the carers, most of whom are exceptional. The residents are rarely taken out in the minibus. My husband has been out only four times in the two years he's been there. All staff friendly and welcoming.

Staff are very accommodating although some are a little inexperienced. The home as a whole needs more structure and consistent management. Residents need more stimulation and contact to avoid loneliness.

I've had lots of problems with this home in 2016.
But with the temporary management it has changed for the better and I feel more confident they will provide the right care for my mother.


You couldn't get better carers and nurses at Gracewell...

Mother has been in the care home with dementia since May 2014. In the first 2 months her wedding ring went missing, never took it off in over forty years!! Since then things have improved, I think this is down to support agency workers, full time carers are good and trust them. Have complained about
the toilet not being cleaned, this has improved. Seem understaffed to me. Main complaint is attitude of agency workers, different every time I visit. From £4,800 per month I expect more. Saying this mum seems happy but she has dementia!!!

A wonderful place to live, great care is taken with everything that is done for me. I am an elderly lady who is not safe to live at home alone. I am 92 years of age and I cannot express my feelings, although rather expensive it has let me be free and safe. My family live quite near and its gives them
peace of mind having found this place.

Smart and up to date building. My sister has a large room (en suite) and has been encouraged to personalise it. The staff are very friendly and loving and there is a nice range of activities. I feel that her social and emotional needs are met. Unfortunately consistency of care is poor, with too many
agency staff or staff moved from floor to floor and therefore not aware of individual needs. Staff seem poorly trained in dementia care. Good practice at management level but poor interaction and awareness from general care.

Compared to previous care homes Gracewell of Basingstoke has top marks. The facilities are excellent and the staff work very hard and show that they care. The only criticism is lack of staff sometimes but they are actively recruiting. A quiet room would be a benefit.
