Our dad was warmly welcomed and quickly settled as a resident of Cairdean House in December 2021. This was thanks to the Customer Relations Manager who was very knowledgeable, informative and with us every step of the way; nothing was too much trouble. Throughout the process Cairdean staff held our
hand, making the experience and transition for Dad unimpaired, removing any stress and anxiety naturally felt by families during difficult and emotionally challenging times.
Rooms are spacious, clean and comfortable which Dad was able to adapt with some of his personal belongings to 'make it his own'. Good to see that some units are being brought back up to standard under the current refurbishment programme.
A nutritional array of food is offered and, as a family, we have celebrated several special occasions, including birthdays, catered for by the in-house chef and Catering team.
In the past Dad has benefited from trips on the barge to Ratho and he particularly enjoys singing along with a variety of musical entertainers who regularly perform in the café area. Dad enjoys the interaction with animals when visits are coordinated by the Activities team.
In recent months, a high turnover of staff and changes at management level have resulted in a distinct lack of essential continuity. Reliance on agency staff at weekends can make the quality of care more variable. This is being addressed, under the new Management team, with staffing believed to be at full capacity and training underway. Any negative aspects, concerns or issues, when brought to the attention of the Management team, have been satisfactorily resolved.
Regular and very experienced staff are excellent in their professional approach and take responsibility for care seriously, getting to know and building a rapport with Dad and his family. They are kind, caring and respectful towards Dad. Dad's care and wellbeing will always be our first priority and we are happy to be a part of the 'Cairdean family'.

My family and I are delighted with the staff and facility at Cairdean where my elderly mother is now resident. The process of moving my mother was clear and the staff were efficient, friendly and supportive. The home is a beautiful environment for Mum to live and she is very well looked after with good
care, entertainment and top-quality meals and activities.
We are made very welcome each time we visit and the move has had a very positive impact on my mother’s well-being.

Mum moved into Cairdean House at the end of October. We had looked around several care homes locally and decided that Cairdean would be the most suitable. It had a nice atmosphere, friendly staff and lots of activities for residents to take part in if they want. Mum originally thought that she would
only be there for a short while to give it a try and then return to her little bungalow. It has taken some time for her to settle and staff have been very helpful to both her and myself with any requests and help settling in. Nobody likes, leaving their own home. She is certainly very well cared for and is now finding activities that she enjoys. Her health has shown signs of improvement and she is certainly enjoying her meals! The customer relations manager has been most helpful and approachable at all times, as have all the staff.

Mum moved into Cairdean in January 2024 after having carers in her own home. I felt it was the right place for her from the minute I called to arrange to view the home, the tone of the call and the care shown about Mum was lovely. On Mum being offered a place she moved in and was met at the door and
welcomed into the home by the customer relations manager who looked after Mum and showed her to her unit. All the staff on duty that day popped in to see Mum while the necessary forms and questions were discussed. It helped to have a friend with me and she took Mum to look around while I continued passing on as much as I could about Mum's likes and other necessary information. Immediately it felt like the right place for Mum. She is now enjoying all the activities on offer and has never looked better. The staff are all lovely and can't do enough for Mum.

We are delighted with the overall support to Mum and our family.
We viewed quite a few care homes, both in Edinburgh and Mum's hometown, Cairdean was by far the one that was the most welcoming, offered most activities and gave us a feeling that, although a large care home, they had done their upmost
to make it feel homely, warm and welcoming. The ratio of staff to residents is by far the best we have seen.
We are delighted and relieved that, after a few weeks, Mum is starting to settle in. She says she has made some new friends and always says when we visit 'the staff are so caring and kind here', completely unprompted by us.

My aunt has been a resident from August 2023 and she has progressed in a positive way both in health and wellbeing. Since our initial contact, the personal attention and information supplied to us by the customer relations manager, we have been very impressed. My aunt does not feel like she is in a
care home but in a small community with new friends. All staff she interacts with have treated her with respect and care. The activities which are available to her are so numerous and varied we have to plan our visits accordingly so she does not miss any she wishes to attend. Any issues or requests we have had, have been quickly resolved by speaking with the customer relations manager. She finds time to stop and speak to us and our aunt as a 'friend'. The customer relations manager welcomed us on entering the care facility and has made the transition for our aunt an easy and stress free one from moving from her home into care. This has also greatly helped us by giving us peace of mind and not worrying if our aunt is safe. Well done to all staff.

Dad has been a resident in Cairdean for only two months. Prior to him moving in we received excellent information and support. Concern around aspects of Dad's care, due to his complex needs at this time of life, were answered thoroughly and we found everyone so approachable. This has continued thus
far. Earlier today for instance, I had a supportive and helpful conversation with the clinical lead on Dad's floor.
The genuine, friendly atmosphere in Cairdean is much appreciated by us.
The only problem we have experienced is with some of the communication around the finances, not from anyone at Cairdean, but from the central financial offices/department of Care UK. It was a little stressful, with wrong amounts being billed, and we needed to follow up and clarify things, but it seems ok now.
In summary, we are thankful for Dad being in Cairdean during this season of his life when he needs so much care and attention. Many thanks for your care and support of Dad and our family.

Initially, we were happy with the care being provided for my mother, but it has become apparent that there are several issues with the staff management, the knowledge and experience of the staff caring for people with a lived experience of Dementia. There was a serious incident with my mother, she called
stating she had been assaulted by a member of staff. When we arrived there was an injury to my mother's leg. It has been reported to the care inspectorate and an internal investigation is ongoing. It was explained that this carer will not work with my mother again, but is still at work, which even if it is still being investigated and an allegation, surely the member of staff would have no clinical contact with fellow residents until the process is completed. We have been given no further information from the manager, so not involved in the process, disgusting behaviour by all involved. We are in the process of moving our mother on, please don't allow your family member to stay here.

Reply from Samantha Debenham, Reviews Team at Cairdean House

We are tremendously disappointed to hear of your mother’s experience at Cairdean House. At Care UK, we take reported incidents such as these extremely seriously and cooperate with regulators to ensure they are investigated thoroughly. Whilst this complaint was promptly raised to the appropriate departments, the Care Inspectorate and local protective services by the Home Manager, we understand due to limited information provided, the investigation was taken no further. If you would like us to investigate your concerns further, we would encourage you to provide further details using the form on the following web page.

Fantastic supportive team from the outset of the family enquiry about looking for a new home for Mum. When I first visited I noticed, along with my sister, the buzz and the liveliness of the home. I observed how all the staff, over a range of positions, engaged with residents in such a dignified and
also fun manner.
Moving Mum in was something I felt quite anxious about, however, the team helped and were readily available to help with questions. Of note, was the medical assistance the team offered in transferring the GP Mum was using, including how they have understood Mum's needs.
Mum has settled in very quickly and I can see just how stimulated she is, smiling and laughing again. I even get told by Mum that she is too busy to speak with me just now. Such a transition from the loneliness and isolation Mum was experiencing beforehand.
I feel very fortunate that this is Mum's new home and she in safe and good hands.

Really pleased with Cairdean House Care Home and all its facilities. Our mum moved into the residential part of the care home and has instantly made friends. She was really lonely in her previous place.
There are so many activities going on that Mum can choose where she can go to.
There is a lovely
atmosphere there, the staff are all so friendly and welcoming. The customer relations manager, in particular, has helped Mum with the transition and with all the family members. I live in Kent but my two sisters live closer by.

We have been very happy with Dad's experience at Cairdean House Care Home. He has been there five weeks and all the staff have been welcoming and friendly and he is well cared for. Dad is in a residential unit and was made very welcome by the other residents. There is a full activities program but he
can pick and choose what he goes to. He has occasionally complained about the food, hence the four stars.
The customer relations manager was very helpful during the application process and accommodated our need to move Dad in on her day off. We did feel that Dad's room wasn't quite ready for him when he moved in. It was minor issues that were easily fixed but it did affect the way we felt at what was already a very difficult time. This was a shame as it was avoidable however, the staff were able to sort out these minor issues quickly and since then we have been very happy.

We are pleased to hear your father has had a positive experience in moving to Cairdean House, with a warm reception from the team and a full activities schedule for him, and all, to enjoy! At Cairdean House, our catering team work hard to ensure the meals provided are nutritious, made with fresh produce and appeal to all residents’ preferences. Feedback is encouraged so we can adapt the menu to suit all, so we will continue to work with your father to ensure his needs and preferences are accommodated for. Our team also work hard to ensure residents’ rooms are fully prepared ahead of move-in day. We make sure to not have multiple residents moving in in a short timeframe so we can dedicate our time to ensuring everything is ready for you.

Cairdean House Care Home has been transformational for my dad. It is an exceptionally welcoming and friendly place where all staff always greet residents by name. The nursing care and activity programmes are comforting and stimulating. The facilities are beautifully maintained with exceptional attention
to detail. The meals are nutritious. Dad’s regained lost weight. The hospitality to residents’ visitors is very welcome, especially the cakes! After his hospital stay, my dad really appreciates that staff always come to help quickly when he needs to use his buzzer. Cairdean is a highly nurturing and professional setting that we can’t thank enough for their care and support of Dad.

My father recently moved into Cairdean House Care Home following an extended stay in hospital. From the outset, his level of care had been outstanding. Staff are incredibly engaging and caring and have made the transition very easy for my dad. The home is very well-appointed and maintained to a high
standard. The facilities and activities ensure that Dad's day is filled with engaging and interesting opportunities and he is a willing participant. It is comforting to see that staff are constantly assessing residents and encouraging them to participate in activities that best suit their own, and other residents', needs. Since arriving at Cairdean my dad's physical and mental health have improved dramatically and I have no doubt that much of that improvement has come around through the individual attention and support he has received from staff. The level of communication we receive is first-class and it is a huge comfort to know that he is in safe hands and being so well looked after.

Impressive initial introduction to the attractions of Cairdean House, persuading me that this was a suitable place for my sister and this has been proven in practice since she moved in. Nursing, care and reception staff are warm, friendly, attentive and efficient and go the extra mile. The activities
are very fulfilling and wide ranging. Excellent food choice. Lovely outdoor areas to enjoy relaxation.

From the very moment I stepped through Cairdean House Care Home, I just had a gut feeling that this was the perfect place for my mum. All the staff are wonderful and the home is immaculate.
My lovely mum has only been a resident for three weeks and the staff have been absolutely fantastic at settling
her in. They really go out of their way to ensure both residents and relatives are fully supported.
The cafe on the first floor is second to none and a lovely place to have some 'mother and daughter' time to chat over a coffee and a cake.
The weekly timetable of activities is very encouraging to see with a great spread of different activities.
As a new resident, it will take some time for Mum to adjust but I couldn't have chosen a better home for her which provides enormous comfort to me, so all I can say is a great big thank you to all at Cairdean!

Mum moved into Cairdean House in March. With family members, I visited other care homes, but always came back to Cairdean House. There was always a warm welcome from everyone and always a positive and active vibe, making a very tough decision easier. I wanted somewhere that was near to me for easy visiting,
allowed dogs, was modern, bright and had a garden. The timetable of activities on offer had to be suitable to my mum and 'doable'. I found that Cairdean met the brief, along with recommendations from friends.

The staff are fantastic, who can't do enough for the residents; and relatives too! There is a good choice of food and snacks available when required. There are plenty of communal areas to sit in including a cafe on the first floor.

If Mum is not too chipper, I help with the garden and chat to other residents which is a joy. What a laugh we have.

It will take time for Mum to adjust, but she is safe, I am happy to leave her and I have the support that I need.

Our experience as a family has been very positive, very welcoming and informative prior and since my sister has been placed in Cairdean Care Home.
It is very early days, only been two weeks so far. She is still settling in, huge transition from moving from a five-bedroom home. She is now much closer
to all the family and enjoying more visits.
She does need encouragement to join in some activities, once there really enjoys them.
Very grateful for peace of mind knowing my sister is safe and loves the location of her room looking out to the garden.Thank you.

This is my mother's fifth respite break in Care UK Nursing & Residential Care Services Cairdean House! She's prone to developing infections which leave her weak, needing help to get back to self-sufficient fitness before moving home again.
We've always been impressed with the warmth of reception at
Cairdean. The staff are welcoming and friendly (especially those who now know my mum well) and very thorough in their assessment of care needs. Comprehensive detail is efficiently recorded for medication, physical ability and aids, dietary requirements, details of any preferences, etc.
The carers in Mum's suite are very attentive; they've been quick to learn her routines and what she needs assistance with. She's always pleased to see me for some company, but she also clearly enjoys the banter that she's developed with a few of them.
We're well used to the excellent facilities at Cairdean and my Mum always picks out various activities from the weekly programmes to make full use of them. She's more entertained there than at home!

My sister and I were naturally apprehensive about Mum moving to a care home but the staff at Cairdean House Care Home made the process, from the initial visit to Mum’s last days, as easy and collaborative as possible.
The building is modern, clean and fresh with large windows to allow residents to
see into the gardens. There are a number of places to sit with relatives with tea/coffee facilities readily available.
There was always a good choice of food at mealtimes and snacks available when required - even birthday cake!
There’s a regular timetable of activities in place to keep the residents engaged and stimulated and Mum was gently encouraged to take part. She particularly liked balloon tennis and the bands which played in the upstairs cafe.
The most reassuring thing for us though was undoubtedly the staff. Everyone involved in Mum’s care was professional while at the same time very caring and we were very happy leaving Mum in their care and it did feel like a home from home for her.

If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 90 registered maximum number of service users is 18, which has been reached with 26 Positive reviews. Points = 1

Job Title: Home Manager

I’m proud to be home manager at Cairdean House care home. I’ve been a qualified nurse for over 40 years and have managed care homes for the past 18 years. Along the way, I’ve completed my SVQ 4 in management, all mandatory training and hold certificates in working with children with special needs and in inclusion skills.

I chose to work at Care UK because of its strong reputation as a good company. In my role, it’s important to be open, honest, organised and to have a good sense of humour. Having strong listening skills and responding to issues in a timely manner is essential.

My favourite part of the day is walking around the home, chatting with staff, residents and relatives, and looking for ways to continue improving our environment. One of my proudest achievements was commissioning a care home from a building site into a luxury care setting.

It’s incredibly rewarding to see residents enjoying some well-deserved self-care, feeling happy and getting involved in activities. It’s also great to receive good ratings from external and internal inspections.

Outside of work, I enjoy music, singing and spending time with my granddaughter.
