Cairdean House has a homely feel, with lots of spaces where residents can relax and socialise, such as the coffee shop, cinema room and hair salon. an agreed hourly charge for this service.

Our experience as a family has been very positive, very welcoming and informative prior and since my sister has been placed in Cairdean Care Home.
It is very early days, only been two weeks so far. She is still settling in, huge transition from moving from a five-bedroom home. She is now much closer
to all the family and enjoying more visits.
She does need encouragement to join in some activities, once there really enjoys them.
Very grateful for peace of mind knowing my sister is safe and loves the location of her room looking out to the garden.Thank you.

This is my mother's fifth respite break in Care UK Nursing & Residential Care Services Cairdean House! She's prone to developing infections which leave her weak, needing help to get back to self-sufficient fitness before moving home again.
We've always been impressed with the warmth of reception at
Cairdean. The staff are welcoming and friendly (especially those who now know my mum well) and very thorough in their assessment of care needs. Comprehensive detail is efficiently recorded for medication, physical ability and aids, dietary requirements, details of any preferences, etc.
The carers in Mum's suite are very attentive; they've been quick to learn her routines and what she needs assistance with. She's always pleased to see me for some company, but she also clearly enjoys the banter that she's developed with a few of them.
We're well used to the excellent facilities at Cairdean and my Mum always picks out various activities from the weekly programmes to make full use of them. She's more entertained there than at home!

My sister and I were naturally apprehensive about Mum moving to a care home but the staff at Cairdean House Care Home made the process, from the initial visit to Mum’s last days, as easy and collaborative as possible.
The building is modern, clean and fresh with large windows to allow residents to
see into the gardens. There are a number of places to sit with relatives with tea/coffee facilities readily available.
There was always a good choice of food at mealtimes and snacks available when required - even birthday cake!
There’s a regular timetable of activities in place to keep the residents engaged and stimulated and Mum was gently encouraged to take part. She particularly liked balloon tennis and the bands which played in the upstairs cafe.
The most reassuring thing for us though was undoubtedly the staff. Everyone involved in Mum’s care was professional while at the same time very caring and we were very happy leaving Mum in their care and it did feel like a home from home for her.

We were well briefed by the customer relations manager on the facilities, staff, activities, and on what to expect to happen for a new resident. Excellent facilities, supportive and caring staff and team towards residents and family. Great variety of activities and good social interaction. Fantastic and nutritious variety of food and drinks available all day. Improvement - need to step up general housekeeping within rooms and toilets and increase
hygiene protocols in ensuites.

Fantastic staff, can’t do enough for the residents, very patient, also take the trouble to know and remember relatives. Kind and caring atmosphere.
My mother especially loves birds, great having a feeder outside her window but getting to it is not easy and don’t want to bother busy staff. Having someone
stocking it up every few days would be great but appreciate time is limited.
Finally, having a phone in each unit that relatives could phone directly would be great and save staff e.g. in the evening from having to take the phone up from reception.
Thank you for all you do, it’s great having peace of mind knowing my mum is safe and well cared for. So very much appreciated.

My mother moved into Cairdean House in February and the staff have all been really great with her since her arrival. They made sure she settled in well and quickly and give us regular updates on her progress.


The home offers a wide range of activities and my mother is much more mentally stimulated

as a result. She is always encouraged to take part which means she is doing things that she won't otherwise have considered.


The home is modern, clean, and has a nice cafe area upstairs where visitors can sit with the residents. This makes it feel much less like a traditional home.


The food is varied and the resident chief made a fantastic birthday cake to celebrate my mum's 90th birthday.


We are really pleased with the home and grateful to the super staff who do a great job looking after the residents. Thank you

I did not have the opportunity to visit Cairdean House Care Home before my aunt entered but I had to become involved early on as I am my aunt’s financial attorney. I was immediately struck by the responsiveness, helpfulness and professionalism of the customer relations manager and this has continued
through all our further interactions. My mother was a resident in other Edinburgh care homes until last year and the availability of a customer relations manager as a single point of contact at Cairdean for family and friends makes an enormous difference.
Since my aunt entered the home in October 2021 she has been very contented, she comments very favourably on the food, how friendly the staff are and that she is being very well looked after. My wife and I have been able to visit a few times and all our contact with staff on reception, the customer relations manager and in the suite has been very positive. The home is modern, clean and Covid precautions are taken very seriously. A good choice.

We chose Cairndean as it was local for our Mum and always looked like a nice place whenever I drove past. The time had come quite urgently for my Mum to find a home to support her needs and it was a very stressful time finding somewhere quickly. Cairndean their Customer Care Manager were absolutely
fantastic and understanding. The ‘on boarding’ paperwork process for Mum was quick and simple and they kept in touch and always phoned when they said they would. The confidence in dealing with them made the whole process less stressful. And we knew that Mum would be well looked after as the staff were so engaged, professional and involved. Six months on and Mum has settled in and seems to have a new lease of life. The activities are fantastic and you can pop in whenever and are treated like one of the family when you do. The staff are amazing and the care standard is great. It gives us all peace of mind knowing that Mum is being looked after so well.

My father died earlier this year and the day we buried his ashes, my mother suffered a heart attack. After a short visit to hospital, she returned home but then had a significant stroke. This resulted in her being paralysed down her left side. She now needs full-time nursing care.
My father had been
in Cairdean House Care Home when he died and we had been impressed by their sympathetic support and deeply caring approach. The helpful staff made the decision to move Mum to Cairdean very easy. She now is in an environment with caring staff and friendly residents. She now participates in organised activities with other residents and joins them in the lounge areas. We are confident she has access to the social and medical care she needs now.
With the area she is in getting busier, she sometimes finds getting attention from staff takes too long.

My growing mobility problems and my wife’s dementia had made it too difficult to maintain our flat, forcing us to consider both going into care together. During the lockdown, seeing a home was almost impossible but Cairdean House Care Home allowed us to visit. The large, modern, well-decorated bedrooms
appealed and the home was also close to family. The customer relations manager could not have been more helpful in making the move. A removal company took small items of furniture, ornaments and our luggage for the 40-mile move. From the start, every effort was made by staff to make us welcome; so by the time we arrived our bedrooms were ready, cases had been unpacked and clothes put away. After six weeks, we are settling into a new way of life, where the daily program of activities aims to keep the “little grey cells” working. My wife is finding new friends while being cared for by staff who understand her, and this frees me to become involved in different activities.

My best friend moved into his new home this is what it has become to him in April home.
I looked after my friend for many years and the decision to move was very difficult. However thanks to the manager and staff he is a changed man he is so happy to become the person I knew laughing getting lots of
stimulation not to mention cocktails and basically leading a new life. This home is different and I've been involved with a few in my career the staff treat the residents as though they are part of a large family sometimes
One to one. My friend says he's made so many friends both staff and residents and is enjoying his life more than he has in years. The staff are very welcoming to relatives and visitors which I see as a bonus. Even under these Covid restrictions staff have gone above and beyond. A sign of a great care home is hearing laughter and that stands out here.

My brother required full-time nursing care urgently six weeks ago and Cairdean House was recommended to us as being able to accommodate his needs. He went in initially for four weeks respite care but is so settled that he is now planning to stay permanently. Right from my initial enquiry, the customer
relations manager could not have been more helpful in making the move as smooth and stress-free as possible. She has resolved every request and minor teething problem to help him settle, efficiently and sympathetically. My brother looks happier and more relaxed than he has for a long time. The staff are friendly and kind and he is taken out to the garden daily to visit the rabbits! He is also enjoying the food very much! I have no hesitation in recommending Cairdean House as a welcoming and caring home.

It was a huge decision to move my dad up to Edinburgh from the house he had lived in, for 67 years in Manchester, but after the death of my mum, two years previously, he was lonely and not taking good care of himself. Not being able to see him for months on end due to Covid restrictions was very stressful.
I knew about Cairdean House and it was my first choice. Fortunately, there was a room free when I made a preliminary enquiry and things moved pretty quickly. My main contact at Cairdean guided me through all the procedures necessary to bring Dad north of the border. She is friendly, always contactable and totally understood the emotional upheaval this move meant to both my dad and myself. Every morning for the first few days, the customer relations manager would email to give me an update on dad’s settling-in progress plus photos of him in his room during the first week’s isolation period. Now, two weeks on, he is happy, well cared for and has made new friends. For what more could you ask!

After a prolonged spell in hospital, I was advised that my wife required full nursing care as she no longer had mobility. Finding a care home in the middle of the Covid crisis, that was able to meet her needs, was very, very difficult. Principally because being able to visit and view a home and its
facilities was impossible.
The Cairdean staff was extremely helpful, and after intensive discussions, was able to offer a room which seemed acceptable. An important part of the process is to have a comprehensive website which has detailed information and photos of the facilities. A number of other homes sounded good but were unable to provide this.

My mum has been in Cairdean House care home for a number of years now. The decision to move her into a care home was very difficult and upsetting so getting the right one was very important. Prior to Cairdean House she was in 2 other homes, neither of which we feel gave her the same quality of care
she receives in Cairdean House. Prior to Covid our family visited regularly and looked forward to seeing her, carers and other residents. We always feel she is being well looked after. During Covid, although at times unable to visit, we have been kept up to date with at least weekly phone calls on how she is doing. Unfortunately, due to Mum's dementia, Skype calls are not an option but we always look forward to seeing the Facebook posts of what activities they have been up to. Having Mum in Cairdean House during Covid has been a relief knowing that she has been well looked after and we can't thank all the staff enough.

Understandably, our sister, aged 62, who had motor neurone disease, was very anxious about going into care. We were worried about her too as we knew we wouldn't be able to see her daily as we had, due to Covid. The staff made her very welcome from day one. Each one was amazing and she was an individual
to them - as were the other residents! Staff cared for her exceptionally well, making her feel at home, became friends with her (which she so needed), included her in activities and kept us informed at all times. The staff learnt from motor neurone disease professionals as her disease progressed and this they did amazingly well, ensuring our sister felt safe at all times. Our sister enjoyed the company - lots of fun times, but she also felt cared for and knew the staff were there for her 24/7. I cannot praise the staff at Cairdean House highly enough. Every one of them was kind, worked well as a team (wanting the best for the residents and each other) and wanted the best for our sister. So thankful to them all!

Our Mum has only just been transferred to Cairdean and although we have not been able to visit inside the care home due to Coronavirus restrictions, we cannot thank the staff enough for making the transfer so stress-free. The staff set up mum’s room with her personal possessions and took pictures for
us. Every member of staff I have spoken to knows who Mum is and that she is a new resident. The customer relations manager has kept us informed every step of the way and personally spent time with Mum when she first arrived. I received a message from Mum via the customer relations manager to say that (after only three days) she was settled, the food was delicious and the staff were lovely! The manager also took the time to ask how my sister and I were coping with it all. As I cannot really comment on some of the facilities I have simply marked ‘good’ however if our first interactions are anything to go by I have no worries at all that they will be excellent.

    1. 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews.     2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 90 registered maximum number of service users is 18, which has been reached with 30 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Angela Burns

Job Title: Home Manager

I’m proud to be home manager at Cairdean House care home. I’ve been a qualified nurse for over 40 years and have managed care homes for the past 18 years. Along the way, I’ve completed my SVQ 4 in management, all mandatory training and hold certificates in working with children with special needs and in inclusion skills.


I chose to work at Care UK because of its strong reputation as a good company. In my role, it’s important to be open, honest, organised and to have a good sense of humour. Having strong listening skills and responding to issues in a timely manner is essential.


My favourite part of the day is walking around the home, chatting with staff, residents and relatives, and looking for ways to continue improving our environment. One of my proudest achievements was commissioning a care home from a building site into a luxury care setting.


It’s incredibly rewarding to see residents enjoying some well-deserved self-care, feeling happy and getting involved in activities. It’s also great to receive good ratings from external and internal inspections.


Outside of work, I enjoy music, singing and spending time with my granddaughter.
