I’ve always found the home to be very caring and professional. I have confidence in the staff regarding my father's care needs and he is very happy there. He is a particularly high need resident and needs help with all day to day care, the staff are very patient with him and happy to do it.

In July, my 86 year old father was admitted to hospital in Hertfordshire. The doctor in the hospital told me he was at end of life care and he was expected to die within two weeks. Somehow he hung on and I was therefore able to arrange a transfer to a care home in London to be nearer family.

What an absolute blessing and joy my dad ended up in Maples Care Home! Two months later, my dad is doing amazingly. He is in bed, watching TV, doing puzzle books. He is still at end of life, but I have had all these extra, wonderful weeks. I am so grateful to everyone at Maples as I believe the care he has received has led to such an unexpected outcome.

There are so many people working at Maples who are all looking after the residents and keeping them safe. The first people I met were the admin team at reception, who were friendly and efficient. Everyone has all truly been so wonderful. Thank you so much, everyone!

I have found every member of staff at Maples to be helpful, caring and supportive in every aspect of my mother's care. Nothing is too much trouble and when there has been a minor issue, a positive outcome was reached almost immediately.

Clearly every effort is taken to ensure that staff receive excellent training which clearly benefits the residents at Maples.

This care home is a really good option for anyone looking for a place where they will be cared for with compassion and kindness. It is clean and has a great atmosphere but the best thing is that relatives and residents alike are treated with dignity and respect.

We came to the home at a very difficult time and it was such a relief to feel that my brother was being cared for so well. He settled in quickly and after having several stays in hospital his general sense of wellbeing improved once settled.

Our mum was taken to Maples from the hospital for respite care after breaking her knee and sustaining another fall at home. We were only allowed to visit a few times due to covid regulations which we fully appreciate. However, on my first visit I found her with only a cardigan on no undergarments and a dirty skirt (we had provided ample clothes for her) however when I looked in her wardrobe there were no other clean clothes. Also, the room had crumbs over the floor, clearly not been cleaned and her newspaper was stuck to the portable table has clearly been there a few days. Lastly, she had a fall while in the home, we were not notified and only found out that she had been admitted to hospital after Social Services rang us about another matter and asked how she was! This was five days after the fall and we had been to the care home two days prior to drop off our mum's case as she was due to come home and were not told even then that she was not there.

Reply from Tony Onabanjo, Home Manager at Maples Care Home

Hi Janet, we have looked into these issues carefully. Your mother’s electronic care records show that her personal care was dealt with often, whenever she requested it, and she was always helped to dress/undress. Our records show that her room was cleaned daily, with regular Covid-19 environmental...

When my father was first placed in this service there were concerns around his safety and the ability of the staffing team and management support team. Whilst I believe those involved were "doing their best" their best wasn't good enough, there was limited experience and skills within the care teams and the clinical/deputy managers were in-experienced. There were issues/safe guarding's and investigations into my father's and others care at one time.
However, I would like to say that when the current home manager arrived, within quite a short time with the support of the interim manager supporting we quickly felt much better about my father's care and that the improvements made were effective, quickly undertaken and person-centred to him.

I would also say that throughout the whole time my father was at The Maples the clinical manager was an exceptional clinician with outstanding skills and humanity in what was often very difficult circumstances.

Reply from Tony Onabanjo, Home Manager at Maples Care Home

Dear Deborah, thank you for your review. We are pleased that you felt that your father was in good hands at the end of his life, and was receiving care that was both person-centred and compassionate. My mum was at the Maples Care Home from February 2021 for end-of-life palliative care. She got transferred from hospice. I can honestly say hand on heart that my mum was loved and cared for to the end of her time. The staff kept my mum clean and cared for her 24/7. She was given respect and dignity. We were kept informed on portal every day of her progress. The staff were very friendly and polite on all occasions and cared for us as a family. I am pleased my mum was in the Maples as they are 1st class.

I can not fault Maples. My mum has been there since August 2019. After coming from a really bad care home. Maples is like a breath of fresh air. My mum is well looked after, staff are lovely. Since COVID I haven’t been able to see my mum since March. But I have regular Skype calls, I am kept up to date with everything and can also see my mum's daily care online. So even tho I can’t visit, I still feel close to her and I’m not worried about her at all. My mum looks so well compared to a year ago before she came to Maples. I do not understand why the CQC report is inadequate. Thank you Maples!

Dad moved into Maples in November, I cannot speak highly enough of the care he has received. The home is immaculately clean, the staff have been so friendly and have really welcomed dad and settled him in. The manager has really made this transition as smooth as possible, especially for someone with dementia. Dad was really unhappy in his old care home but has really perked up since moving to the Maples. Through my observations when visiting dad, I’m really impressed by how kind all the staff are and how they treat the residents with so much care and attention. Both myself and the rest of the family are really impressed with the Maples.

The first thing I noticed about the Maples Care Home was how bright and clean it was. The reception I got from the admin staff was very helpful. The nurses and carers were also helpful with any questions and my fathers specialist dietary needs taken care of. They even put his favourite TV programme on every night. I also, noticed how patient they were with the Dementia people and there appeared to be plenty of activities going on. Although my dad was only there for a few weeks before he passed away. He was kept clean, tidy and made comfortable. His room and bathroom were also very clean.

My dad moved to Maples having been diagnosed as terminally ill with cancer. I could not have picked a better home. The communication with me is excellent, Dad is always consulted about what his wishes are. The staff are very caring and although they don't take over his care as he has deteriorated they've increased the help to him. All the family are very happy with the home and most importantly Dad is. The nurses and management are very approachable and always keep me up to date. Dad is treated with dignity and respect.

My mother has been at Maples for 2 years. She has always been happy. Staff tell me she sings and smiles constantly. Therefore, she must be happy in her home. Staff and management are very approachable if anything happens ie a bruise due to my mother's frailness, I always get a call to let me know. I feel comfortable leaving my mother in their care.
