We found that the home had improved greatly since our previous visit. All the staff we met were extremely welcoming, and staff on the top floor went over and above to be helpful. We visited with our daughter and young grandchildren, and the staff were so kind to them - providing drinks, biscuits and crisps and ensuring a welcoming room to visit our relative. Our visit was very uplifting, and the atmosphere seemed so much more cheerful.

Now the home is open for visits after the pandemic, a huge amount needs to be done to be more welcoming to visitors. On a recent visit we felt like we were a nuisance for visiting. Temperature checking is still inaccurate (reading far too low). We have pointed this out for months. Staff seemed preoccupied, not friendly, but quite curt.

This was respite care for two weeks. My husband has no short-term memory. When I telephoned the first day, he told me he was lonely and I think he needed help to feel comfortable. One day he did not look great, with unbrushed hair and a very poor shave. My husband told me the food was fine, I could not get any news about activities.

I have been at Hambleton Grange for two weeks for respite following surgery - my late husband spent a long while here. My only serious complaint is the bedding. Trying to sleep on a rock hard mattress with a slab of concrete called a duvet for cover and my head on two lumpy pillows which long ago should have been given to the local animal shelter - not conducive to a night's much-needed rest. Please, ideally send a rep to spend a night and I'm sure you'll agree. At £1100 per week - not on!

Choosing the right care home for mum was a very daunting and responsible decision but from walking through the doors on our very first visit we have always been made to feel very welcome. We are encouraged to treat Hambleton Grange as mum's home and visit whenever we choose. Mum has settled extremely well. The care and support that she receives is excellent and the staff and management are very helpful to us all. Mum will often tell me that she is in a lovely hotel with very friendly people and she is having a great time - I think that says it all! I would certainly not hesitate to recommend Hambleton Grange.

As their Attorney, I moved my parents into Hambleton Grange during the Covid pandemic - they were struggling at home, especially with my Dad's dementia. They moved from 90 miles away - the Care Home team expertly facilitated this long-distance transfer. Covid prevented any face-to-face meetings, so I had a comprehensive video tour and the Manager spent a long time on the phone finding out my parent's Medical Histories, personalities and personal likes/dislikes. We personalised their adjacent rooms with familiar items prior to the move - pictures, books, personal items and clothing. It has proved to be an excellent move and they have both settled extremely well. My Mum is full of praise for the cleanliness, food and, most importantly, the friendly staff. She said: "I am very content here - the staff treats us like family". Personally, I have found the Manager and all her team to be very professional, helpful and superb at keeping me informed about my parent's welfare.

I have no hesitation in recommending Hambleton Grange.
Until mid-February 2020, my 88-yeard-old aunt has had respite care following an injury sustained after a fall.
During her stay, she was treated with the utmost respect, with kindness and care from all the staff. Hambleton Grange is a modern, purpose-built home, with light airy rooms and en-suite.
The varied communal areas are beautifully presented with comfortable seating and dining areas.
There are many stimulating activities throughout the month, whilst encouragement is given to join in; there is no pressure to do so.
When I have visited, without exception, I was acknowledged by every member of staff; all were friendly and professional.
I live many miles away from my aunt and was confident that she was being well cared for by staff who took time and patience to do so.

My aunt's only regret - is that she returned home before the horse racing season started as she would have had a Grandstand view!

Having visited several care homes while looking for a place for my husband Hambleton Grange was by far the most pleasant. It was bright and cheerful and had a home-like feel. No unpleasant smell or chairs around the outer of the room. It was lovely to have a quiet lounge. Somewhere to be a little more private if a few family members were to call. The majority of the staff were lovely but there is always room for improvement. Need to keep more permanent staff and less agency.

After 2 years at this home, Mum had to leave when they said she needed dementia nursing care which is not provided there.
Both a council assessment and the home Mum moved to stated she didn’t need nursing care so does this home simply not want residents who become difficult?
This home disappointed in several ways after this:-
- Calls from carers on subjects deserving management attention like DNR decisions
- Mum still in bed (smelling of urine) at 4:30pm, deemed “unacceptable” even by the manager
- Mum (again) being sent to hospital alone in an ambulance and in A&E for 3 hours
- Mum’s teeth being lost, having to leave this home without the top set
- Several requests for a haircut not actioned leaving a relative to cut it
Most upsetting was finding Mum’s wedding ring missing on the day she left. 3 times I was told someone would call me, but no one ever did.
There are real stars amongst the staff, but issues remain in front line care decisions and actions.

Luckily Mum’s settled well in her new home where staffing is noticeably higher.

Placing a loved one into care is such a difficult and emotional decision however the family feel that our dad going to Hambleton Grange has been a positive experience. The building is clean and tidy, the rooms are a good size, well equipped and maintained and the staff are friendly and accommodating. Managers always listen to any queries or requests. They have got to know our dad well, and are familiar with all his ‘quirks’ and have learnt how to deal with them. They have gone out of their way to mark special occasions such as family birthdays and his own 90th. Although we would have loved him to remain at home, we all recognise that he is much better off being looked after and in many ways is calmer being away from the responsibilities he felt were in his shoulders being at home. Of course, he has good and bad days and I am sure that he will react better with some carers better than others, but that is human nature and not a reflection on staff. We know he is safe and well cared for.

Making the decision for dad to go into care was tough as it meant mum and dad living separately after nearly 65 years of marriage. He had a few sessions of respite which worked well and has been a permanent resident for nearly 6 months. He’s calmer without the stresses of trying to manage at home, has settled well, and mum’s quality of life has improved too.
Staff are fantastic and there is always someone available if you have anything you want to discuss. They go the ‘extra mile’ to make their residents feel special - we had a wonderful 3 generation family celebration to mark dad’s 90th birthday last month and I will always treasure my memories of that day. Dad began his working life in the ‘tea trade’ and staff organised a special day for him to experience the present day equivalent at Taylor’s, Harrogate. Dad loved it!

Hambleton Grange is well run, clean, food is of good quality, I am always made to feel welcome, and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to others.

In July 2018 it was decided that my wife would go into Hambleton Grange for two weeks to give me a rest. I noticed after about three days that she was looking much happier than when she was at home and she agreed with me that she was. A day or two after this I asked her how she would feel about staying there, she said she would be happy to do so. I think one of the reasons for this is that the staff are so pleasant and helpful and she gets on very well with them.

The standard of care my mother received was very high and the fact she was content is a testimony to that.

My dad has been resident at Hambleton Grange since April this year; we’ve consistently been pleased and impressed by the quality of care he has received. Since his dementia has worsened, he has lost his mobility and is dependent on wheelchairs and hoists but in spite of these issues, the staff, knowing of his great love of trains, managed to take him on a trip to the National Rail Museum in York. The day meant so much to him and I’d like to say publicly how brilliant the staff were. Thank you!
