Overall Experience
My partner came to this care home on 23rd February 2023. Upon arrival his bed wasn't made up, no one to explain procedures e.g. meal times etc and no friendly welcome. Poor communication and language barriers.
I stayed with him for 2-3 hours. Upon my return home, I received a telephone call from the home to say my partner had got out of bed and was found crawling along the corridor.
What kind of care home is this that allowed this to happen?

I would not recommend this care home under any circumstances.

Reply from Graham Burrell, Manager at Kendal Care Home

We are deeply sorry that you feel you have had a bad experience when in our home. At the point of pre-admission of all potential new customers, we work diligently with our partners and families to gather appropriate and trusted information, which forms the basis of decision-making around...

I am happy with all aspects of my mother's care. She came here on discharge from the hospital and could not walk or do much for herself. The kindness and patience of the staff, through gentle but firm encouragement, transformed her to the point where she is able to do a lot for herself. The environment, activities, food and cleanliness are all fantastic, but it is the gentle, kind, amazing care staff who deserve the greatest praise. Thank you all.

Short of staff, very obvious.
Laundry - ironing - needs attention, clothes don't come back as they went!
Housekeeping - dirty windows in the dining room.

The staff are all very helpful but some it's difficult to make them understand what you are trying to ask/what they are trying to tell you.

Reply from Tina Johnstone, Director at Kendal Care Home

I am extremely apologetic that this has been your recent experience within the care home but I would also like to thank you for your time to review so experiences such as these can be minimised in the future.

After looking after the client for 3 years, after her losing her son it became very hard for her to stay at home. Since coming to Kendal Care Home she has a lovely room with an ensuite. She's eating properly and engaging with her new friends every day. She's now a lot happier thank you Kendal Care Home!

My mum has been in respite for 4 weeks, the staff are so friendly, nothing is to much trouble. The manager is so approachable. They have made my mum's stay a positive experience for her. She is using skills, we thought she had lost. She is mixing and making friends. I would recommend Kendal care home to anyone. Thank you for looking after my mum so well.

My mother is just reaching 100 years of age and now needs 24 hour support.
Moving from her home of 15 years has been an emotional challenge.
The transition has worked out brilliantly.
The Manager installed a lot of confidence when we came to look around the home and the product speaks for itself.
From our immediate arrival and during the first four days the staff have been very caring, kind and patient with Mum and I have been able to leave the home feeling confident that she is being well looked after. After just two days she was mentally and emotionally in a very good place and very settled.
We are hoping that over the next couple of weeks she will get to know the other residents a little better and enjoy the facilities that the home provides.

We are very happy to have chosen Kendal Care.

My mother has just enjoyed her 100th birthday at this excellent care home. The staff are kind and caring, the chef made her a special cake, and the staff decorated the room with banners and balloons. We were so grateful to them for making her special day so happy and memorable.

Definitely going the extra mile, here! Thank you so much to all the staff who look after her in so many ways. A day to remember.

My 96-year-old father has been in Kendal Care Home for just over a year following a stroke. The care he is receiving I find is excellent. Staff are always very pleasant, welcoming and obliging whenever we visit or call. Rooms and any other areas I have seen always look very clean.

The staff in the home looked after Mum very well during her 15 months as a resident. She made a close friend with another of the residents which made her stay there easier. I would like to say the care and attention in her last few weeks was commendable.

Kendal Care Home looked after my mum for just over four months. She liked the accommodation and staff. She liked the activities. Kendal Care Home was very efficient in registering Mum with the local GP on arrival. The unit manager was very responsive to my concerns at one point and the subsequent, next day GP appointment was also very accommodating of my experience of my mum's illness. During Mum's decline, the staff made her very comfortable and helped my family in the last few days, making sure we had everything we needed to ensure Mum was pain-free. The days after her death they helped with the next steps and saying goodbye with dignity and privacy for which I am very grateful for.

My father came to Kendal Care Home in November 2019, having suffered a stroke. This was very upsetting and life-changing for my father and our family. From the very first contact with Kendal Care Home, I was made to feel totally reassured and everything was organised so quickly and in a compassionate and professional way - it really did make such a difference.
All the staff are extremely kind, caring and compassionate, not only to the residents but also in the support given to the family. They become like your own family and friends. The atmosphere is always upbeat and cheerful and nothing is too much trouble. The activities are great and there is always something for residents to join in with.
The food is consistently nutritious and all home-cooked on the premises.
Residents' rooms and all the residential areas are very clean, spacious and welcoming. I also like the fact that it has a lovely large garden.

I am so pleased we chose Kendal Care Home for my father and would highly recommend.

My brother was admitted into Kendal Care Home in December 2019 with terminal cancer. He received very dedicated and professional care throughout his time there, which was just over a month before he died on the 4th of January 2020. The ethos of the care home was to ensure my brother had the best possible quality of life in the circumstances and that he was comfortable and pain free. The nurses and carers and staff were also extremely kind to me. My brother could not have been in a better place.

My Father was a resident on the Dementia Unit at Kendal Care Home for over 17 months, initially, we had the choice of a few care homes but I was sold within a few minutes of walking into this home, with its stylish modern decor and welcoming, informative, friendly staff. It’s such a huge decision to make for your Father but safe in the knowledge we made the right choice. Dad was always extremely well cared for, and staff were forever thinking of new therapies to make my Dad more settled. He loved men in sheds where he made a fantastic birdhouse which takes pride of place now in my garden. He was always clean and tidy which was greatly appreciated. I lost my dear Dad on Christmas Eve, and will never forget the love, support, knowledge, patience and understanding in making my Dad comfortable, keeping us updated always, telling us what will/could happen next, and at all times, respecting my dads wishes and dignity and supporting us at such a difficult time, well done and thank you so very much.

I can't give enough praise for the care that is being provided for my dad. He is being cared for on the nursing unit at Kendal Care Home.
Every single individual on that ward, from the nurses, carers, laundry ladies, occupational therapists, physio have shown so much care and respect towards my dad and my family.

Great management and an incredible place from the minute you walk in the door. This is how the elderly and the sick should be cared for.

I cannot thank the staff at Kendal Care Home enough for their support and care of my father. Although a short sta, Dad was welcomed by all, and know by name by many staff members, from occupational therapy to nursing, through to management. As a family, we were so pleased that my Dad spent his final days in such a peaceful and compassionate environment, and were touched by the empathy shown towards him. Most importantly, Dad's dignity was retained at all times, even under the most difficult of circumstances. Particular thanks to two certain staff, you know you are even if we can't use your names.

Overall Experience

My daughter, aged 50, has Down syndrome and early-onset Alzheimer's, Dementia. She has been in Kendal Care Home for the past 10 months. She is unable to stand, walk or move her lower body at all, even in bed so is hoist dependent, and requires a special chair when out of bed. She is doubly incontinent, cannot feed herself, needs thickened fluids and pureed food. In other words, she is totally dependent on carers and cannot advocate for herself. I was told by most care homes that they would not take as she has Down syndrome. Fortunately, I asked Kendal Care Home and they welcomed her. It was the right decision, and she receives excellent physical and health care from the nurses and carers. She is always treated with kindness and respect. The Activity staff include her in activities - she loves music - and OT staff give her exercises to retain what mobility she still has. I also feel supported and part of a caring community. I strongly recommend Kendal Care Home to anyone needing care.

Reply from Nigel Francis, Manager at Kendal Care Home

Kendal Care Home offers a safe, clean, tidy, well-managed place to be looked after. The rooms are well furnished and nicely arranged for the differing needs. Our relative is treated with respect and feels safe and looked after/well cared for.

My only criticism would be the lack of stimulation provided. Understand that the staff are always busy, it's a shame there isn't more provision for one to one or small group interaction.

Kendal Care Home supported and lovingly cared for my dad during his journey through dementia. The way the staff treat Dad's confusion and distress was amazing. He came to see them as family and friends enjoying what he could in his situation, he knew he was ill but his struggle was diminished as he enjoyed the special sessions, activities and routine of this special little community. The staff have been amazing, even attending his funeral and I can't praise them enough. Thank you.
