Avonbourne Care Centre offers two distinct homes in which residents enjoy living life to the full, in vibrant care communities, with great people around them 24-hours a day. Avon Court is for those of their residents living with dementia, where specially trained carers are on hand to support. Bourne House looks after those who need a little extra help to maintain their independence. Bourne House is also where you'll find their nursing household. Both homes offer short-stay respite care to look after a loved one whilst family members and carers use the opportunity to take a well-earned break.

Each home has beautifully furnished living accommodation, spacious en-suite bedrooms and fully accessible, landscaped gardens which can be enjoyed all year round.

Everything in the care homes has been carefully designed to enrich the lives of its residents, who enjoy daily social activities that are perfectly tailored to their needs, with joint events in the central coffee shop, beauty salon and cinema. There are cosy seating areas for a cup of tea with loved ones, and outside terraces for sunnier days.

My mother arrived at Avonbourne in November 2023. On the whole, she has been well looked after but I don't think the staff were well briefed about her underlying problems, particularly with dressing herself due to shoulder injuries and also the challenges she faces with the seating as she is a tall
lady and therefore finds standard chairs and toilets etc. too low.
She has always cooked from scratch and finds the menu very poor, on many occasions not getting what she asked for. There is no evidence of the menu offering a healthy choice. There is too much sweet food and not enough protein and fibre.
Reply from Rowen Campbell, on behalf of the team at Avonbourne Care CentreThank you for your feedback. We were sorry to learn that some of your mother's experiences fall below the very high standards of care that we set for our teams in all our homes. Please do speak to the home manager or the team on site should you have any questions or queries - they are always happy to help and answer any questions you might have.

It's always a difficult decision when it becomes apparent a relative may need full time residential care. My sister has been coming to Avonbourne for respite on a regular basis and it was becoming increasingly difficult for her to be at home. Having support from the wonderful manager and care staff
they made the transition almost stress free and welcomed my sister with open arms. She has since settled very well and tells me the food and activities are great. Her room is always spotlessly clean and it is a wonderful safe environment. I leave after visits with nothing to worry about knowing she is happy and well cared for.
Reply from Rowen Campbell, on behalf of the team at Avonbourne Care CentreThank you very much for your kind words, and for taking the time to write us a review. We're delighted to have your sister with us and pleased to hear that she is happy here. If there is anything more we can do for her, or for you, please just let us know.

My mum went into this care home in May 2023 and is enjoying being there.
The care is good and the carers have got to know my mum and how she works so they are fulfilling her needs. Always good entertainment which my mum takes part in. Mum was living on her own so was very lonely but now has people
with her all the time. We now have peace of mind.
Reply from Rowen Campbell, on behalf of the team at Avonbourne Care CentreThank you for taking the time to write us a review and for sharing your family's experiences of moving into a care home - I'm sure it will help others in a similar situation. I'm so pleased to hear that your mum is getting so much out of being with us at Avonbourne and that we've been able to give you that peace of mind.

All the staff were kind, helpful and supportive. We felt reassured on all levels and the building and garden were safe and secure. We were treated to a wonderful lunch with my mother. The table was beautifully laid, the food was fantastic and the staff so attentive. There was always a list of activities
available if you wanted to participate. My mother's room was very comfortable and it felt like her home, and she started to settle in really well. Thank you!

When my mother moved into the care home, she soon settled down, and I cannot thank all of the staff for what they do for Mum on a day-to-day basis. When I visit, the staff go out of their way to make me feel very welcome on her unit, and they treat Mum with respect and dignity and are never rude to
Mum, even on her challenging days.
So please keep up the good work you are all doing to support my mum.

Food is not suitable for elderly patients who can now only eat basic foods. Although the staff say my mother can ask for anything, that is not her experience, in reality, and staff become off-hand with her. No real staff (most agencies) and not interested in building relationships with patients. Some
reception staff rude to visitors and do not pass on messages to management. The place is generally dirty. I doubt underneath my mother's bed has ever been hoovered. Staff not proactive in helping or getting things done.

When my mother was transferred to Avonbourne Care Home, the very first time we went to visit, we were very impressed with the layout and cleanliness and friendliness of all the staff in their various departments. We would thoroughly recommend Avonbourne to anybody whose relatives need to go into this
type of facility.

My father has been a resident within Avonbourne Care Centre for three weeks now and I cannot fault the care and support that all the staff have given to him, myself and my mother during this time.
I was very anxious as to how he would settle into the environment given his health conditions but these
anxieties were soon reduced having seen daily how well the staff interact with him and the compassion that they display for their work.
During this short time, I've had contact with all the departments in the home, the manager is brilliant, the nurses and carers are second to none, the domestic staff do a great job, even the handyman lent me his screwdriver during one visit! Whilst my father cannot participate in planned activities, he certainly keeps the staff entertained and I am very grateful to them for their understanding and patience.

My parents stayed for three weeks of respite care at Avonbourne Care Centre. The entire premises were spotless, the rooms were all en suite and comfortable. There were several lounges and a lovely garden.
The care team were extraordinarily kind and caring. I did not worry for a single minute, I know
my parents were being beautifully looked after. The front-of-house team were very organised and always welcoming. The food is cooked with care and love. Avonbourne Care Centre has a big heart.

Dad has been at Avonbourne Care Centre for over two years and is quite advanced with dementia. He needs care and supervision with all his daily needs from washing, dressing and eating and now struggles with his mobility. The carers treat him with care but also respect which is important to us. They

My dear mum has been in Avonbourne Care Centre for four months now. The process of moving a loved one into a care home is fraught with anxiety and stress, but we were treated with the utmost care, compassion and understanding and nothing was too much trouble. It took several weeks for Mum to settle
in and the minor issues that arose in those first weeks were dealt with promptly. Now Mum has adjusted she seems well, and as happy as she can be under the circumstances, which is all we could wish for her.
The facility and all the staff are simply excellent, the day-to-day care Mum receives is of a high standard. The meals and drinks provided are very good, and there are activities for the residents to engage with on most days, we’ve seen a positive improvement in Mum with the added stimulation available to her, just being around and sharing the company of other people of a similar age coping with similar issues undoubtedly benefits her; she is much brighter now.
We’re very impressed.

Current Review Score: 9.1 (9.099)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.1 (9.099) out of 10 for Avonbourne Care Centre is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.4 out of 5 from 21 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.7 out of 5 from 18 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.399 for Avonbourne Care Centre is calculated as follows: ( (165 Excellents x 5) + (45 Goods x 4) + (11 Satisfactorys x 3) + (9 Poors x 2) + (13 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 243 Ratings = 4.399
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.7 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Avonbourne Care Centre is based on 18 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 3.95
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 120 registered maximum number of service users is 24. 18 Positive Reviews ÷ 24 = 0.75
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
