I was recommended Harcourt Gardens for respite care following a knee replacement.
It is without a doubt fantastic.
The residents are lovely, friendly, and welcoming, with every need catered for, there is so much to do, so many events/entertainments, equally there are many different areas to sit be
peaceful or chat, the roof terrace is beautiful, as are the gardens.
The staff certainly go that extra mile and are so very helpful and considerate. All the buildings including the bedrooms are very clean and personalisation of your room is encouraged.
There are 3 full meals each day of the highest quality, served at dining tables, so everyone can have a chat.
I wondered if I was doing the right thing, having respite care, but I'm so glad I came, and I will be so sorry to leave.
Absolutely recommend.

What a wonderful home. Very welcoming staff and a fantastic, friendly vibe in the coffee area. I feel my friend has settled well and always says the food is fantastic - varied and tasty. The staff are very helpful and the Wellbeing staff work hard to give enjoyable experiences. Beautiful surroundings,

Harcourt Gardens in Harrogate has been deeply disappointing. Our experience was marked by serious concerns regarding medication management and an overall lack of attention to both the physical and emotional well-being of residents. This neglect significantly increased health risks for our mother, causing
her unnecessary distress when she should have been cared for in a safe and supportive environment.
The high turnover of staff has resulted in a lack of continuity and familiarity with residents' needs. Management has been unresponsive and unhelpful, leaving us feeling ignored and anxious about our mother's care.
As a result, we had to move our mother to another care home in Harrogate. This caused her further distress and anxiety.
We would not recommend Harcourt Gardens to anyone.
Reply from Jill Pollard, Home Manger at Harcourt GardensThank you for sharing your comments. We always strive to provide high-quality care and are disappointed to hear that you thought we fell short on this occasion. We apologise if our recent conversations and previous responses haven't fully addressed your concerns. Please let us know if you'd like to schedule a meeting to discuss this further. Do not make the mistake of choosing this care home for dementia care.
The biggest challenge was staffing and a lack of continuity, there was and continues to be a huge turnover in staff in every area from care staff to hospitality, well-being and even management, in just a 6 month period there have
been 3 different home managers. Agency staff are used on a regular basis and there are frequent staff shortages.
Person-centered dementia care is advertised but this really wasn't the case in our experience. The residents on the dementia floor are often left and rarely get to go outside or leave the floor as there are never enough staff to take them out anywhere.
On admission, we were assured by the manager at the time that the home would cater for all of mum's future needs as nursing care was about to be introduced. Yet despite this mum was given notice to leave and told that her needs could not be met, with very poor communication about the reasons and no support offered from management.
Reply from Jill Pollard, Home Manager at Harcourt GardensWe appreciate you taking the time to review our Harcourt Gardens Care Home. We're sorry that your experience fell short of your expectations. We always aim to do the very best for our residents and their families, so it's disappointing to hear you felt we could have done more. However, we welcome feedback as it helps us continue to improve our services. Best wishes, Jill

I would definitely recommend Harcourt Gardens for residential care as the grounds, room sizes and decor are akin to what you would expect from a luxury hotel. In my experience however, the dementia residents on the 1st floor are very much disadvantaged by not having any regular outdoor access to the
grounds or rooftop garden on the 2nd floor in summer due to a shortage of carers. There are no staff working between floors and there are no regular trips outdoors either which is a great shame. The care provided is good but staff shortages limit the opportunity for residents to make full use of the available facilities, such as the cinema room in the basement, which was always empty whenever I visited. Also, the nursing care provided does not include specialist dementia care, which was not apparent to us when we chose Harcourt for residential care to start with. In summary, Harcourt Gardens is a lovely place and is full of lovely people but caters best for residential care.
Reply from Jill Pollard, Home Manager at Harcourt GardensThank you for sharing your experience at Harcourt Gardens. We are committed to providing a high-quality living environment for all our residents and ensuring that their needs are met. We appreciate your feedback, as this helps us identify areas where we can improve. Best wishes, Jill

My father spent his last six months at Harcourt Gardens. His heart was weak, and he had mild dementia. He was very well supported physically during his stay, and the staff had a very helpful and friendly relationship with him. Family visits were encouraged. Access to my father's room was easy, and the
ground-floor bistro was a very welcoming and attractive destination. His condition meant only a few group activities were suitable for him. A few other residents were reluctant to engage with him, but the staff did their best to minimise difficulties. His eventual death in the home was well handled by staff and management, both emotionally and practically. My memories of visiting my father at Harcourt are good ones.
Reply from Jill Pollard, Home Manager at Harcourt GardensThank you for your kind words about Harcourt Gardens. We are deeply touched to hear that your father received such excellent care during his time with us. It is our utmost priority to provide a supportive and comfortable environment for our residents, and we are delighted to know that we were able to meet your father's needs. We are also grateful for your positive review provided during your father's passing. We understand that this is a difficult time for families, and we do our best to offer compassionate support and guidance. Best wishes.

My sister has only been in Harcourt less than a year as I live in Scotland and no longer drive I have only seen her 4 times, only once when we arrived in the afternoon and you knew we were coming, she was dressed like the lady she was. Once I arrived her hair was covered with what looked like a bird's
nest of cradle cap. I asked that the doctor be called to look at it and it took 2 weeks before I heard the doctor had called. Her wardrobe had many clothes that did not belong to her, holes in woollen jumpers! I have brought and sent clothes here which I see now are named, thank you.
I have spoken to the hairdresser about her hair and she cut and dried it in a new short style which makes all the difference to her and she will see her every 2 weeks. She was a dressmaker, and seamstress in a big way and was always clean and tidy.
Reply from Adel, Home Manager at Harcourt GardensThank you for your review. I am sorry that your visit to see your sister was not as you would have hoped, but am glad to hear that the hairdresser improved things. I have seen her since in her community and chatted with her and she was very happy and content. I hope this eases any concerns but please be assured I am always on the end of the phone if you wish to check on her.

I came unexpectedly to visit my friend and was treated so special by the staff. As I had no prior engagements and had plenty of time to space I was invited to stay for lunch. We didn't even have to go to the dining room but had lunch at our table in reception. This was lovely and very much appreciated.
The lady who served us was exemplary and even took photos for me to look back on. Thank you so much.

I live in Spain, so since my mum has been here, I have visited twice. The first time was just after Mum had moved in and she was very unsettled, but the staff were very understanding and communicated with my brother, who is Mum's main contact. Once Mum moved up to the Harlow Suit, she settled straight
away and is happier than I have seen her for a long time. I can't comment on the care or management as such because I haven't seen them with Mum.

My father decided to try life at Harcourt Gardens for 4 weeks of respite following several falls and experiencing acute loneliness following my mother's death. From our initial enquiry and visit to date, dad has been shown great kindness and care from all the staff and I have also been made truly welcome

Both my father and mother-in-law have recently moved in together at Harcourt Gardens and they have been received with the warmest welcome from a kind, caring and compassionate staff team. The dementia and residential communities are calm and carefully designed, with a series of domestic style living
spaces to make their residents feel at home. The rooms are always immaculately clean and tidy, and the variety and quality of food is perfect. The inclusive atmosphere is what particularly appealed to us; partners with differing needs can transition between floors to spend as much time as they wish with their other halves.

Current Review Score: 9.3 (9.308)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.3 (9.308) out of 10 for Harcourt Gardens is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.3 out of 5 from 39 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 30 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.308 for Harcourt Gardens is calculated as follows: ( (276 Excellents x 5) + (93 Goods x 4) + (40 Satisfactorys x 3) + (29 Poors x 2) + (13 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 451 Ratings = 4.308
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Harcourt Gardens is based on 30 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 115 registered maximum number of service users is 23, which has been reached with 30 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Job Title: Home Manager

My favourite part of the day in my role as home manager at Harcourt Gardens is doing my walk arounds and spending time with colleagues and residents. I enjoy being present in the home and seeing the meaningful moments that happen when people feel safe, valued and supported.

I hold a degree and Level 5 qualification in leadership and management, and before joining Harcourt Gardens, I worked as the CEO of a dementia charity. Throughout my career, I have learned the importance of patience, understanding and being non-judgmental. I believe a home manager should be pleasant, positive and genuinely caring, and I bring those values into my role every day.

A proud career highlight for me was creating a 1950s village as part of a dementia-friendly environment, as well as writing a book on care homes. I am equally proud to be part of a team that strives to make life better for others. The most important part of my role is being a voice and advocate for residents and colleagues whenever they need support.

Outside of work I enjoy horse riding, baking and taking care of animals.
