I could not be more thankful for the very short time my dad spent at Harcourt Gardens and only wish it could have been longer.
Dad received such great care at the end of his life here. We chose Harcourt after many visits to other homes that just didn’t cut the mustard on what we wanted for Dad's exit
from life.
The staff, the environment, the location, the standard was exactly what we’d hoped for. It was more reminiscent of a 5-star hotel rather than a care home.
Dad resided in the care suite where he and all his family were welcomed, made to feel at home and nothing was any bother. We were treated with empathy, trust, mutual respect and sensitivity. We were able to visit as much as we wanted, stay as long as we wished, and were offered meals and a room to stay in should we feel we did not want to leave Dad. This took so much pressure off a highly stressed time.
All staff were professional, kind, warm and courteous. Bedside manner was exactly how it should be.
I highly recommend a visit.
Reply from Debbie Daniels, Home Manager at Harcourt GardensThank you so much for your lovely review and recommendation. It was our pleasure to care for your dad and to support you and your family at such a difficult time.
Best wishes,
Debbie

Overall stunning. It has been a tough time for our family, my father needs nursing care following a stroke and my mum has dementia. We looked around other homes that could take them both, but Harcourt stood out by a long mile and have not put a foot wrong since. They genuinely care for not only their
residents, but family too. Communication is fantastic, happy to answer endless questions with a smile, they're understanding, provide lots of information, so supportive, such wonderful staff. Best decision we made. Thank you.

I had been on holiday for 3 weeks, on my return Mum had told me the number of visitors she had had. I spoke to them saying Mum was pleased to see them. They all commented on the four receptionists at Harcourt Gardens. How friendly and helpful they were, especially with the logging in and out machine.
They made their first visit easy as not sure what to do.

My 93-year-old husband came to Harcourt Gardens and was immediately cared for with care and compassion. Initially we had a few issues as he needed more care than originally assessed. As soon as this was highlighted by the manager and myself it was addressed and my husband was moved to a more suitable
room. The care he receives is of a very high standard and he is completely settled.
Reply from Debbie Daniels, Home Manager at Harcourt GardensThank you so much for your wonderful review. We're delighted to have been able to accommodate your husband and adapt his care plans accordingly.

On each and every visit to Harcourt Gardens, I have seen the care and attention given by all the staff (numerous ones) to visitors and residents alike. Without saying, the building, furniture, decor and the total layout are beautiful, but the most important aspect of this home is the care and constant
attention to each and every person witnessed and experienced on each visit. To the staff - keep up the good work and your smiles and timeless kindness are the life, blood and joy.

I cannot recommend Harcourt Gardens enough. From the day my mum arrived, the staff were friendly and professional. I live abroad, and when I arrived to visit, I was impressed by the professionalism of the staff. As an auditor and hotel consultant, I dean my life checking systems and processes of different
establishments, and I am more than satisfied that my mother is safe and well cared for. Access to facilities is only achieved with a secure fob which is acquired from receptions. The staff are all polite, smart and professional in their area of expertise, and nothing is too much trouble.

An excellent care home with dedicated staff. Facilities are extremely good and the food is excellent. The easiest way to describe Harcourt Gardens is that it is live living in a five star hotel. I wanted the best for my husband and I believe I have found it.

My dad and stepmother came to the home at the beginning of the month having transferred from another out-of-area home. From the moment they arrived, management and staff have been welcoming, professional and attentive to their needs. They have also been very welcoming to the family. We are incredibly
impressed after less than a month.
The home environment is absolutely lovely. We are enjoying popping in to see my dad and step mum and seeing how well they are being cared for.

Mum was often unkempt and soiled. We doubted that she was showered regularly so we would bathe her ourselves. The safeguarding/crisis team was involved a few times due to concurrent urine infections (hygiene issues). Twice mum had been put to bed fully dressed and was found the following morning soaked
in urine. Staff was friendly and did their best but seemed out of their depth and some lacked the skill sets required to deal with dementia. High staff turnover and staff shortages. We saw mum every day to feed her and make sure she was clean. We chose Harcourt when were told categorically that this home would see her through her dementia journey, regardless of any changes in her needs. Surprisingly, after 7 months we were told that 'they could no longer cater for mum's care needs' and we were asked to source a new home. Mum is now in her new home which 'specializes' in dementia care only. The difference in her and her care is immeasurable.
Home is nice for residential care but query dementia care.
Reply from Rachael Dunseath, Head of Marketing at Harcourt GardensThank you for taking the time to review Harcourt Gardens. We are sorry that your time with us was not as you would have wished. We always aim to do the very best for our residents and their families, so it's disappointing to hear you felt we could have done more. However, we welcome feedback as it helps us continue to improve our services. We are glad to hear that your Mum is now happily settled in her new home.

Current Review Score: 9.3 (9.308)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.3 (9.308) out of 10 for Harcourt Gardens is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.3 out of 5 from 39 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 30 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.308 for Harcourt Gardens is calculated as follows: ( (276 Excellents x 5) + (93 Goods x 4) + (40 Satisfactorys x 3) + (29 Poors x 2) + (13 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 451 Ratings = 4.308
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Harcourt Gardens is based on 30 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 115 registered maximum number of service users is 23, which has been reached with 30 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Job Title: Home Manager

My favourite part of the day in my role as home manager at Harcourt Gardens is doing my walk arounds and spending time with colleagues and residents. I enjoy being present in the home and seeing the meaningful moments that happen when people feel safe, valued and supported.

I hold a degree and Level 5 qualification in leadership and management, and before joining Harcourt Gardens, I worked as the CEO of a dementia charity. Throughout my career, I have learned the importance of patience, understanding and being non-judgmental. I believe a home manager should be pleasant, positive and genuinely caring, and I bring those values into my role every day.

A proud career highlight for me was creating a 1950s village as part of a dementia-friendly environment, as well as writing a book on care homes. I am equally proud to be part of a team that strives to make life better for others. The most important part of my role is being a voice and advocate for residents and colleagues whenever they need support.

Outside of work I enjoy horse riding, baking and taking care of animals.
