My husband's dementia manifests in his challenging behavior. I visited many care homes before finding Haviland House. Many of them were converted Victorian Houses which meant there were often stairs to be negotiated before the residents could access their bedrooms. Some could not provide the support
my husband needed in feeding, personal care, and general looking after. In Haviland House I found a dedicated dementia care home. The building is divided into 5 houses. Each house is a separate unit where there is a spacious corridor with the residents bedrooms, a comfortable lounge and dining room all on the same level. Each house has a secure door so that the residents are safe and secure whatever their level of dementia is. Every month there is a selection of entertainment which is put up in the house so that staff, residents and residents relatives know what is going on. The staff are incredible and Haviland House is now my second home and the staff my extended family.

Haviland house today and for the last year have been exceptional in the care they give to my mother-in-law. They know her needs inside out, she always looks comfortable and happy!
The staff are all so very friendly and easy to approach. They will always inform you monthly of how she is doing and at
anytime if needed.
I wouldn't want my mum in law in any other care home, they go above and beyond in all duties of care to her.

I had reached the point in looking after mum who has dementia where I could no longer safely care for her at home. I researched Care Homes and had already been to Haviland House Day Centre for afternoon tea. Following a lovely tour Mum initially went to stay for a couple of weeks Respite. This became
permanent and Haviland is now her home.
We wanted the best care possible and we have not been disappointed. They have demonstrated that our trust in their care was not misplaced. All the staff, whatever their role, are always friendly with a smile, thoughtful, courteous and above all caring and patient. They are there for their residents but also for their families. Communications are very good and I have been kept involved throughout the year as things have developed. The whole environment is excellent from her own room, common areas and the many activities that take place. I feel that Mum could not be in better hands or in a better place. I have no reservations in recommending Haviland House.

Our Mum moved to Haviland House in April 2024 and settled in much more quickly than expected. She has been living with Vascular dementia for around 17 years, but is now at a stage where she needs the support of a care home environment.
She spent a year at another care home in Worthing which was a
complete disaster (so stressful and upsetting) and we are so glad to have now found Haviland House. It is a huge relief to know that she is well looked after, by staff who genuinely care for her wellbeing and treat her as the lovely person she is.
She is eating and drinking better, entertained better (thanks to the regular activities available) and always seems cared for, with washed hair, in clean clothes. The environment on Angmering corridor is welcoming and homely, and also always warm and clean.
Special mention to one member of staff in particular who seems to go out of her way to keep an eye on our Mum, answers the phone in her room, and is so friendly and reassuring to us and our kids when we visit. Thank you!
Reply from Kevin Burke, Director of Care Homes and Dementia Services at Haviland HouseThank you so much for your thoughtful review of Haviland House. We're so pleased to hear that your mum has settled in so well and that you feel reassured knowing she is in a caring and supportive environment. It means a lot to us that you've noticed the positive changes in her well-being, from eating and drinking better to enjoying the regular activities we offer. Ensuring our residents feel comfortable, cared for and valued as individuals is always our priority, and your kind words reflect the heart of what we strive to achieve every day. We're especially glad that you find the Angmering corridor to be warm, clean, and homely, and we will pass on your lovely feedback to the team. My husband joined Haviland House in September 2023. He had various dementias and aphasia following a stroke. He had a few hospital visits before end-of-life care. He was as happy as he could be at Haviland and the staff were amazing and helped him feel as dignified as was possible. He smiled and found
ways to thank his carers by shaking the hands of the males and kissing the hands of the females. I thank all of the staff who cared for him when I couldn't. He sadly passed on June 11th but chose to raise funds for Guild Care and dementia.
Reply from Kevin Burke, Director of Care Homes and Dementia Services at Haviland HouseThank you so much for taking the time to leave such a heartfelt review of Haviland House. We are deeply sorry for your loss, and our sincerest condolences go out to you and your family. It was an honour to care for your husband during his time with us, and we are truly grateful to hear that he felt dignified and supported by our team. His kind gestures of shaking hands and kissing hands to express his thanks touched our hearts, and we are proud to have been able to help him feel as comfortable as possible. We are also moved by his decision to raise funds for Guild Care and dementia, which speaks volumes about his character and your shared commitment to helping others. Please know that your kind words will be shared with the whole team, and we are here for you if you need any further support. Thank you again for trusting us to care for your husband during such a difficult time.

Our Mum has been a resident at Haviland for nearly 5 years. Haviland is a wonderful place, with such caring staff, who treat the residents with such respect and kindness. She has made some lovely friendships with other residents and also the staff.
The home is beautiful, spacious and very clean.
The bedrooms are lovely.
There is always a warm welcome and family atmosphere, a relaxed place for residents and their families to feel at home.
Regular activities and entertainment and a beautiful garden for all the families to use.
Nice to see carers have time to sit with residents to talk about topics, their interests and the old days.
As Mum's care needs have increased and changed over the years, it is reassuring to know that as things have progressed Haviland is the right home for her. Haviland caters for many stages of dementia and provides high levels of care and nursing. We enjoy a good relationship with the Haviland staff, all of who are very friendly, approachable and professional.

My mum stayed in Haviland House for 4 months she was end of life care and she loved every day and everyone, she felt very lucky to be there and I couldn't have wished for a nicer place for her to end her life.
My dad is in Haviland he has vascular dementia and it has taken a while for him to settle
but now he says he is staying in a great hotel.
If you want somewhere for your loved ones to be looked after how you would look after them then Haviland is the place, the rooms are en-suite, spacious and clean, the carers are fantastic as are the clinical staff, nothing is too much trouble, meals are cooked in their kitchen and if you time it right you get homemade cake when you visit, yum!
Daily entertainment is brilliant from singers coming in to arts and crafts. Today they made bird feeders from pine cones.
All the staff work so very hard to give our loved ones the very best care and attention.
I couldn't wish for a better home, for my dad.

The home is an utter disgrace. I hadn't done a review before now as we were so traumatised by our experience I needed to forget about it. My Mum was frequently soiled when I visited as were other residents. The whole place stinks. Residents were largely ignored unless it was meal times. The management
couldn't care less and there is a huge focus on money. Despite the huge fees, everything is filthy including cups, bedlinen and rooms. You would be right in asking why on earth we kept her there but, we had no choice. Three staff members were great and a couple of others but that was it. My Mum had an incident of unexplained bruising with very clear finger marks on her arms. I would think very carefully before putting a loved one in here. Mum did not leave her room for a year but is now happily walking and being cared for properly in her new home. One of the carers who knew Mum from Havilland saw her in her new home and cried at the difference.
Reply from Kevin Burke, Director of Care Homes and Dementia Services at Haviland HouseAs Worthing's leading social care charity and provider of high-quality residential care for older people, we take immense pride in our safety and quality track record. Following your concerns regarding your mother's care, we promptly conducted a thorough investigation through our in-house team of care compliance experts. This comprehensive report provided immediate reassurance to the CQC. While we value all feedback, we must address your perception of our environment and the quality of our home. Our facility is consistently reviewed as excellent and superior to others, as evidenced by our numerous positive reviews and the fact that Haviland House is fully occupied. Our vision is for all individuals in need of care to live fulfilling, safe, and secure lives - a vision which is successfully being delivered at Haviland House. I can not express the amount of gratitude to all the staff.
I can not single one person out, the carers have made my mum's respite.

let my mum down so badly.
I can not thank you all enough.

Having been present for quite long periods when visiting my husband. I am full of admiration for the way the staff nurses, assistants, helpers and volunteers are so consistent in the way they carry out their duties. Residents are treated with kindness and respect. Their concerns are addressed promptly

Dad went into Haviland House in February 2023 aged 94 into Bramber Wing. As it was his first time in a care home we were naturally anxious that he would be looked after properly and that his needs would be met. It soon became apparent to us that we needn't have had any concerns whatsoever, and that
every single carer that we experienced who helped look after Dad did a fantastic job. I was fortunate enough to be able to visit him practically every day and evening (along with my two brothers) and we could always see the care, effort, and fondness into looking after him. I think one of any relative's biggest concerns of a family member going into a care home is trust, and we trusted Haviland House to look after him.
To the management, to the nursing staff, to the carers, thank you!

I can't thank Haviland enough for the care and patience shown towards my dad as he battled Alzheimer's. He was not an easy resident, but the staff took time to get to know him and engage with his interests so that over time he settled in and became a part of their community. He had some complex needs,
physical and mental, but Haviland managed everything well and I can't fault the care he received. Haviland was always spotlessly clean when we visited, with no 'smells'. Communication with relatives could be better very good at informing us of issues, but sometimes slow to respond to queries. That said, I'd rather staff prioritise good care over responding to emails/calls. Overall I would recommend Haviland to anyone looking for a home for their loved ones.

A huge improvement in staffing levels since the year-end into January 2023.
I have rated staff 'excellent' in all areas. Their job is a difficult one, often open to abuse from some residents, physically or verbally.
The home's ambiance is more like a hotel than care home. Excellent food.

My mum has been at Haviland House for 2 years. She is and has been well cared for 24 hours a day since her arrival. The nursing staff are excellent with helping her to eat and drink regularly and her general health has improved with excellent care she has received with pain management and dietary needs
catered for. When we visit we feel we are welcomed by staff members from reception to management and nursing staff.
The activities throughout the year are well organised from garden parties, Christmas pantos and birthdays, which we have attended, both us and Mum have enjoyed, making Mum and us feel we are all part of the Haviland family.

My wife has been at Haviland House for a year now, and within the year we have got to know all the staff and lots of the residents and today still. We feel like part of the family. The is lots of entertainment that goes on within the home. Not all of which my wife can participate in but still enjoyable.
I feel I have confidence in the staff that look after my wife when I am not around. The house hold that my wife lives on, has been adapted to provide everything she needs. Now that we are able to again, it has made myself and my wife closer again and now that staff and relatives no longer have to wear masks it is a much more welcoming environment and help the bond not only between her and staff but also myself and staff.

Overall Experience 5.0 out of 5
My wife has been looked after by Haviland House for the past three and a half years. I have to say I could not have hoped for better. The staff have been remarkable in dealing with someone who can be quite difficult at times. Always the most professional and pleasant approach, no matter what.

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.7 (9.700) out of 10 for Haviland House is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.7 out of 5 from 29 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 27 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.700 for Haviland House is calculated as follows: ( (285 Excellents x 5) + (37 Goods x 4) + (9 Satisfactorys x 3) + (12 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 343 Ratings = 4.7
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Haviland House is based on 27 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 67 registered maximum number of service users is 13.4, which has been reached with 27 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Job Title: Care Home Manager Joined: 2022

I joined Haviland House as Care Home Manager in November 2022, and it immediately felt like the right place to be. My career in Health and Social Care began in 2012, when I started as an administrator in a nursing home in Brighton. From there, I progressed to Deputy Manager, then Care Home Manager, before becoming the Registered Manager of an 80-bed residential and dementia home.

I cannot imagine another career that offers such variety, challenge and reward. Making a positive difference to people’s lives every day is what drives me. I am passionate about supporting a team, influencing positive change and ensuring the highest standards of person-centred care.

At Haviland House, the dedication of the team is exceptional. Every member of staff plays a part in creating a warm and engaging environment for people living with dementia. We focus on helping residents feel fulfilled, connected and well cared for.

Getting to know the people we support, understanding what matters to them and seeing them happy is one of the greatest rewards of this role. Helping someone live a life that feels meaningful to them is something I am incredibly proud to be part of.

Job Title: Deputy Manager - Resources Joined: 2018

I have worked at Haviland House since 2018, and over the years, I have had the privilege of growing with the home and progressing in my career. I began as a Night Carer and worked my way up to my current role as Deputy Manager – Resources.

My role involves overseeing staffing, recruitment and resourcing to make sure we always have a safe and supportive staff?to?resident ratio. Because I have been part of Haviland House for so long, I am often the person colleagues come to when they need information or support, and I am always happy to help.

What I enjoy most is welcoming new residents and getting to know their families. Haviland House feels like one big family, and being part of a team that cares so deeply for our residents is something that means a great deal to me.

Job Title: Deputy Manager - Clinical Lead

I trained as a nurse at Guy’s Hospital in London and have now been qualified for over 40 years. Throughout my career, I have gained a wealth of experience across a variety of care settings, with the past 30 years dedicated to supporting people living with dementia.

I am deeply passionate about dementia care and committed to ensuring that every resident is treated with dignity, compassion and understanding. Building meaningful relationships, getting to know each individual and supporting them to live as comfortably and independently as possible is at the heart of my role.

Nursing is a significant part of my life, and I am proud to come from a family with a strong nursing tradition. As a third-generation nurse, it means a great deal to me that my daughter has continued this legacy as the fourth generation, qualifying in 2014.

I feel incredibly fortunate to work in a profession that is both rewarding and meaningful. Supporting residents to live happy, healthy and fulfilled lives is what motivates me every day.

Job Title: Housekeeping Manager

I began my career by running my own home help business for 20 years, supporting people to live independently in their own homes. Alongside my team, we provided a wide range of services, including preparing meals, organising outings, assisting with appointments and offering day-to-day support tailored to each individual.

Following the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, I transitioned into working within care homes and have found it to be an incredibly rewarding experience. I particularly enjoy spending time with residents, building meaningful relationships and helping to create a warm, homely and welcoming environment for everyone. I am passionate about making a positive difference in people’s lives and take pride in supporting residents to feel comfortable, valued and well cared for each day.

Outside of work, I live with my young son and our ageing dog. My son has a strong interest in wildlife and hopes to travel the world one day, focusing on conservation and protecting the environment.

Job Title: Wellbeing and Activities Coordinator

I am the Wellbeing and Activities Coordinator and have been supporting people living with dementia since 2009. I have a particular interest in advanced dementia and enjoy creating calm, meaningful and engaging experiences tailored to each individual.

My background is in art therapy and adult education, and I hold a Master’s degree in Education. Creativity plays an important role in my work, and I enjoy using art and storytelling to connect with people, especially when communication can be more challenging.

I believe that curiosity is essential in dementia care - remaining open, reflective and willing to learn helps me provide the best possible support. I am proud to work for Guild Care, where kindness and compassion are at the heart of everything we do.

Job Title: Care Home Administrator

I have been working at Haviland House for the past two years as a Care Home Administrator, and I thoroughly enjoy my role. Building relationships with residents and their families is a particularly rewarding part of my work, and I value the opportunity to support them each day.

Before joining Haviland House, I worked at Guild Care’s head office in Administration and Governance Services. This experience provided me with a strong foundation of skills and knowledge that I continue to use in my role.

Outside of work, I spent seven years living in New Zealand, which was an incredibly rewarding experience. It gave me the opportunity to travel, meet new people and experience a different way of life—something I will always value.

Job Title: Resident Comfort Coordinator

I’m Buddy, an eight-year-old Labrador with a very calm and patient nature. I’ve been coming to work with my mum my whole life, so being around people feels completely natural to me.

During the COVID pandemic, I spent my days visiting residents who were feeling lonely or isolated, and I did my best to bring comfort just by being there. Ever since, I’ve developed a real appreciation for all the strokes, cuddles and kind words that come my way.

I’m known for my love of tennis balls and for being extremely dedicated when it comes to cleaning up any food that might hit the floor. These days, I enjoy a slower pace of life, and I’m happiest snoozing nearby, keeping people company and getting a good scratch behind the ears.

Job Title: Happiness and Cuddles Assistant

I’m Mabel, Buddy’s little sister and a very enthusiastic two-year-old Cocker Spaniel. I’m still learning from him, but I like to think I bring my own bit of flair to the job.

I adore cuddles, and I’m excellent at rolling over for belly rubs the moment I meet someone new. I’ll happily chase anything that moves and, even though I’m small, I have a surprising talent for helping myself to any snacks that get left within reach.

Full of energy, charm and a little mischief, I love being part of the team, and I do my best to bring a spark of fun wherever I go.
