We used this care home as respite for my father-in-law who has vascular dementia. We picked the home because I felt it was the home which best met all of our needs.
The staff were caring and professional. My father-in-law was well cared for, even when confused at difficult times. He settled down really
well.
During his stay, he actually improved with a marked improvement in his ability to communicate, going from almost non-verbal to being able to talk to me on the phone!
I would be happy to use Valerian Court Care Home again.
Reply from Andrei Joanta, Home Manager at Valerian Court Care HomeThank you very much for your kind words. We were honoured to care for your Father-in-Law and we are delighted to hear that you felt that his respite stay has been so beneficial for him. We can't wait for him to join us again in the future. You are always welcome to come and say hello and have a cup of tea with us.

A modern, clean, and well-appointed facility. All staff engagements have been professional, friendly, and most important, caring. It's early days for my mother but we feel we have made the right choice.

I have been volunteering at Valerian Court for about a year and my first impressions of a warm and caring environment have only been reinforced. The reception team are always cheerful and friendly and the residents are always happy and relaxed. I haven't seen many of the care staff but those I have
met are so caring in their approach to and care of their residents treating them with kindness, dignity, and respect. I look forward to my times with the residents doing craft work or knitting or just chatting and always have a feeling it has been time well spent.
Reply from Andrei Joanta, Home Manager at Valerian Court Care HomeThank you for your kind support for our residents. The local community involvement is very important to us and having you as part of our big family has helped to enrich the lives of our residents. I found the decor amazing and facilities very good but I found/experienced a lack of caring from the staff. They were doing what was required. Feeding one client she was on her phone, and another client had requested toast and tea but was not forthcoming. No consultation certainly a lack of communication.
Should do better.
Reply from Ruth Ann Christie, Manager at Valerian Court Care HomeThank you for your review and we are delighted that you found the decor and facilities to be of a very high standard and the needs of our residents has been very much considered in the total design of the home. We take great pride in providing the very best care for our residents and one of the ways we use technology is to assist us is with our electronic care plan system called Nourish. Through mobile handsets our team members can record and log all interactions with our residents at the moment in time. We are always keen to enhance the care and support we offer and your observations are welcomed and I extend an invite for you to meet with me over coffee to discuss your concerns in more detail.

From start to finish, the care provided was of an excellent standard. The understanding and respect shown to my mother meant I could relax whilst away on holiday, in the knowledge that any significant change would be relayed immediately.
I'd like to take this opportunity to thank the management and
carers for the way they nursed my mother; it was invaluable.
Thank you.
Reply from Kathy Francis, Deputy Manager at Valerian Court Care HomeWe would like to thank you for taking the time to leave this review. It was a pleasure to be able to look after your mother and we are glad to hear that you were happy with the care we gave. Your mother was a joy to look after on each of her respite visits. Here at Valerian Court Care Home, it is important for our relatives to feel they can leave their loved ones with us, safe in the knowledge that they will be well looked after. While you were able to have your own holiday, I'm sure your mother appreciated her time with us too - she certainly used to enjoy having her hair and nails done whilst here!

I have continued to visit my friend after they moved into Valerian Court as part of the Didcot Good Neighbours Scheme. The team all seem very friendly and welcoming. The lounge areas are very well equipped and extremely comfortable for catching up with the resident. The resident appears to have really
flourished being in Valerian Court.

My brother was transferred here from another care home - a different organisation, in July. I visited the home he is now a resident in twice. Each time I was very impressed by the warm welcome from all the staff, both the reception and the care/nursing staff. The rooms were very spacious, and most importantly
for my brother, was the depth of the window in the rooms. In his previous home, his bed faced a wall and he had not been able to see out of a window or view his television properly. He now has a view out of his bedroom window where he can see trains passing by and also trees! The furniture and furnishings are very lovely and so his room feels more like home and very comfortable when the family come to visit him.
The staff have responded to his special needs and the food served to him is excellent (he has a very healthy appetite) - the staff have to feed him and cut up his food as he is disabled. Overall, myself and family are delighted with the home.
Reply from Ruth Ann Christie, Manager at Valerian Court Care HomeThank you very much for your review. We are so pleased that you felt able to give us lots of 5s! Providing great care is at the heart of what we do. A number of our residents love watching the trains. Including the British Pullman part of the Orient Express group! Thank you again.

It was my mother's 97th birthday and a party was provided for the whole family who could make it, and it was a very nice thought, plus many other times. There are a few other areas that could be improved as more activities, but in general, am well pleased with the staff and care given.
Reply from Ruth Ann Christie, Manager at Valerian Court Care HomeThank you so much for taking the time to write us a review - and we are so glad that we scored many 5s! We also have a new head chef - who is already having a very positive impact.

My husband was adamant, he didn't want to go into care, and I didn't want him to either. However, right from the word go, I was extremely satisfied with events as things progressed. My husband has Parkinson's and dementia, which is obviously progressing, but all staff have made him happy and comfortable
the whole time he has been at Valerian Court. Nothing is too much trouble for them. He has had falls, not their fault I might add, but they have taken immediate action, and have notified me immediately. His room is always clean and tidy. They all call both me and my husband by our Christian names and welcome me every time I go to see my husband. There has been one small issue, of which they have now sorted to my satisfaction. I can't commend them high enough.
Reply from Ruth Ann Christie, Manager at Valerian Court Care HomeThank you very much for your review. 99% 5s! We are very happy that your husband has settled into the home with us, and that you feel welcomed. We do always strive for Valerian Court to have a friendly and family environment - and want everyone to feel acknowledged and comfortable. I'm glad that we addressed the small issue for you. Thank you again

My mother stayed for two weeks for respite care and felt very safe and secure. She made many friends and enjoyed chatting to the wonderful staff and residents.
She said all the staff at the home were very caring and helpful with anything that was needed.
It had the feel of a hotel with its light bright
colours and the wonderful Bistro area where family and friends could come in and visit. With my mum, she had a friend who came in for a game of scrabble!
We were very happy with this care home and will definitely be back!
Reply from Ruth Ann Christie, Manager at Valerian Court Care HomeThank you so much for taking the time to review us. And we are so glad that we achieved a lot of 5*s! I note 4*s for Food & Drink. We now have a very experienced Head Chef in place - so I hope that the next time your mum stays with us - 5*'s for that too! We look forward to seeing you all again.

This was a learning curve as it was the first time she had gone into respite. Overall a good experience and it would have scored a 5, but for a few areas of improvement needed. Some communication didn't go right at the start with the pre-meeting at our home, I had to chase if someone was attending,
I think the appointment had been lost, but someone still came around in the end so all got sorted. We completed a check-in list, but no checkout list was done and we are still missing a pair of blue trousers which I have chased, but nobody has found them yet. My mother-in-law concedes she is fussy with food and difficult to please, but some of the food wasn't good in her view, fish pie with rice for instance. There was confusion with how the hair appointment was booked, getting a shower and newspaper delivery to start, but all got sorted into week 2.
Reply from Ruth Christie, Interim Home Manager at Valerian Court Care HomeThank you for taking the time to write a review and thank you so much for 5 stars in a number of categories - it is very much appreciated. Regarding cleanliness - I can't see anything in your narrative so I am unsure as to what you are referring to but it is always a priority for us not least for infection control reasons. Whilst we are recruiting a head chef we are putting agency chefs in place to support our residents having a very enjoyable dining experience. Also whilst we recruit an Activities Lead - we are in the process of having a number of activities assistants and staff in post to enhance our activity and lifestyle program. I apologise that your experience with a couple of our processes wasn't as we expected them to be. Once again thank you very much for your feedback.

Whenever visiting Dad I notice that the activities coordinator creates so many activities. Dad is always busy with something, or being entertained by events that have been organised. For Dad's birthday, she even beat us to it, with a cake, balloons and banners round his door, always making him feel

My grandma has just had a short stay in Valerian Court, for respite care. The facilities were excellent - the whole place was clean and fresh, with modern bedrooms, and lovely communal areas where the residents can spend time together. All of the staff were friendly and professional. The care workers
were kind and attentive to the needs of all the residents. My grandma was well looked after, and kept comfortable and safe.

My father started a 2-week respite care stay and chose to become permanent. From the initial visit to the current day, the staff are friendly and kind and always greet my father and I by name. Staff are able to tell me what he has done each day. He has settled in well and has made friends with other
residents. He has used the hair salon, library and cinema room. He enjoys good food in the social dining area and has been encouraged to play games and do armchair fitness. His room is well furnished, light with a large window and a safe bathroom. He is currently personalising his room with items and pictures from home. My father is happier and more relaxed than I have seen him for a while. When his oxygen levels fell low, staff immediately contacted me and took action by calling paramedics to check him over. I feel he is in safe and caring hands and I can relax knowing he is well cared for and taking his medication. He has grown in both strength and confidence as his stay has progressed.
Reply from Sonia Kasese, Manager at Valerian Court Care HomeIt has been a pleasure from day one meeting your family and your father. Since moving into Valerian Court, my Granddad has been happier, healthier and more relaxed. He sadly has dementia and previously was frequently depressed, aggressive and anxious. Now, although the dementia is getting worse, he's often cheerful and comfortable. The staff are amazing, especially one lady,
who treats my Granddad with genuine care and patience. Thank you to her, you've made a big difference in both his and our lives. We really appreciate it.
The place is beautiful, clean and modern. The food is great: he's gone from being underweight to healthy. There are plenty of activities, which my Mum sometimes joins in with just for the fun! My Granddad is religious and they help him get a taxi to church every week. He's ex-RAF and when he first moved, the staff dressed in RAF uniform to make his arrival special and the transition easier. I can't thank Valerian Court more for making his last days cheerful and caring.
Reply from Sonia Kasese, Manager at Valerian Court Care HomeWe are truly grateful for your heartfelt review. Your grandad has not only been a refreshing personality at the home, but a true gentleman who has made caring and supporting him a real pleasure. The home, the other residents and our visitors have enjoyed his warm hospitality and we are so glad Valerian Court Care has truly become his home. We have all enjoyed his activities and spent an extensive amount of time exploring his fond memories of his flight routes as an ex-RAF officer. We thank him for his service and we thank you for your custom.

(1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
