Since moving Nan here from another home, I can honestly say that the home has surpassed my expectations. Every member of staff has a clear focus on how to make every day a positive experience, and they are all person-focused. From the first visit to the actual move, we were supported fully, and Nan
was welcomed into the community. Nothing appears to be too much trouble, and the care and attention to every detail show the passion the team have to deliver exceptional care.
Reply from Sonia Kasese, Manager at Valerian Court Care HomeIt has been such a pleasure and honour to receive and support your nan in our service. Like each of our residents, she is unique in her own way and has brought additional value to our family here. We thank you and your family for all your continued support to the home.

This care home really does care; not just for its residents but for their friends and families who visit. The front desk is always manned by smiling, approachable and helpful staff members. I have seen staff members genuinely upset when one of their residents is sufficiently ill to be taken into hospital.
All rooms and common areas are kept beautifully clean. I cannot recommend it highly enough. It is hard admitting a family member so, rest assured that if you pick this care home, you can sit back and relax.
Reply from Sonia Kasese, Manager at Valerian Court Care HomeThank you so much for your comprehensive response and genuine interest in all that happens in the home. Your feedback is highly valued and continues to guide our service performance. We look forward to seeing you again.

Very friendly staff, immaculate facilities. Everything was clean, orderly, and well-appointed.
Staff were very good at engaging with the residents and took a personal approach to each of them.
Lots of opportunities for residents to socialise.

Absolutely fantastic care. My grandad has severe dementia and so needed to move to a care home. He was resistant to any change but the staff and facilities are so lovely that he now sees it as home. They have activities for his mind and body and despite how his disease affects his mood - he's more happy
than not. I'm so glad to know there's someone to take care of him 24/7 and also keep him company. The facility is also hi-tech secure so when his dementia wills him to go for a wander - they notice immediately and calm him down.
Reply from Sonia Kasese, Manager at Valerian Court Care HomeThank you so much for your lovely feedback regarding the care we are providing for your grandad. We are very happy to hear that your grandad has settled in well, and that the activities we offer are having a positive effect on his physical and mental health and wellbeing. We are very proud of our beautiful home and "hi-tech" gadgets, but having kind and caring staff is of the utmost importance, and so it is great to hear that you have seen this first hand. Thank you once again and we hope to see you again soon.

Since moving mum to the home in mid-2023 the whole staff have gone out of their way to support and encourage her to become part of the community.
I am extremely happy with the whole team in the home who are welcoming and supportive at all times.

Having looked at a number of homes in a county guide and following a guided tour of this home, with the wide range of facilities on offer, we as a family, in consultation with our father, decided this would be the best place for his future needs.

I would highly recommend Valerian Court. They have always been extremely kind and caring with my grandad. When we visit the staff are very friendly and it's obvious they care about the residents a great deal and work hard to care for them. The place always looks nice and clean when we vist. Since moving
in my 91-year-old grandad has managed to put on some weight and maintain his mobility which is a testament to their care of him.
Reply from Lorraine Bumpass, Administrator at Valerian Court Care HomeThank you for your great review, we are always very grateful when our relatives take the time to leave feedback. Mum has been in Valerian Court for 6 months and has found the staff kind and caring.
Her room is a good size, she enjoys the entertainment but would like a few more residents to chat to. She finds the food quality mixed. Overall I am very pleased with the home.
Reply from Sonia Kasese, Manager at Valerian Court Care HomeThank you very much for your generous feedback. We will look into our food service and review so as to improve Mum's experience of our dining services. We will also focus on appropriate activities to allow Mum to interact with more residents.

From assessment in the hospital by one lady to admission on the 9th of January to her subsequent death on the 28th of January, my mother-in-law was treated with dignity and respect. She was well cared for and comfortable. Staff, from the receptionists, to carers and nurses showed us all kindness. We
could also see and hear the interactions with other service users and these were all kind and respectful. We were so grateful that my mother-in-law was able to spend her last weeks at Valerian Court.

From my own personal experience, I would not want anyone I cared about going to this home if they needed anything other than simple day-to-day care. The facilities are wonderful, and many of the care staff were very supportive and caring.
Too upsetting to go into any details but my mum's last days
were distressing and I felt the home did not give my mother dignity.
Wonderful place if your relation is well.

My father-in-law was transferred from hospital to Valerian Court Care Home Didcot for respite care. The staff at Valerian Court made the whole process very smooth and reassuring for my father-in-law, as well as helping myself in organising everything. Valerian Court moved quickly once we had made the
decision to place him with them, efficiently contacting the hospital to get all the information they needed. They were also able to manage the transfer. It all went seamlessly, which was a weight off the family's shoulders. Once at the home, my father-in-law settled in easily and the staff got to know him very quickly. He has been provided with excellent care and support. All the staff are very friendly and keen to help where they can. I was initially concerned the location would be potentially noisy, but this has proved completely unfounded, the building environment is very clean, airy and peaceful. My father-in-law is in good hands, there is nothing of significance I would want to change.

Dad was discharged from hospital to Valerian Court in August 2023. The staff are very friendly and professional. Not only did they make my father very welcome as a resident, they welcomed us as visitors too. The design and furnishings make a very homely atmosphere. The carers, nurses and management
are very accessible and are always there to help. It is clear that they are well-trained, experienced and knowledgeable. This is reassuring as we are confident that Dad is being looked after very well, and with dignity. Dad’s needs have been changing since he first moved in. We have been pleased that the staff quickly recognised this and have been adapting their care to suit him. They went above and beyond when they provided a lovely afternoon tea for Dad’s birthday. There are always activities going on and it is delightful to see these. I have only given 4 stars for Facilities because there is not a ground floor garden. However, the superb activities programme does compensate for this enormously.

My Mum has been at the care home for just under two weeks. She was initially in for four weeks for respite, after being in the hospital for just under three weeks. After a few days in the home, my Mum decided she would like to make the home her final place, this is due to the wonderful staff and management
being so kind and helpful. The home environment is like a home-from-home feeling. My Mum is getting to interact with other residents and is so happy, she loves the food! Nothing is too much trouble for the staff, they help my Mum when needed. She gets to take part in the activities they put on. I, as her son, cannot recommend this home highly enough.

Current Review Score: 9.7 (9.749)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.7 (9.749) out of 10 for Valerian Court Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.7 out of 5 from 51 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 50 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.749 for Valerian Court Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (481 Excellents x 5) + (83 Goods x 4) + (16 Satisfactorys x 3) + (7 Poors x 2) + (3 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 590 Ratings = 4.749
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Valerian Court Care Home is based on 50 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 70 registered maximum number of service users is 14, which has been reached with 50 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
