  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.2 out of 5 from 5 positive Reviews in the last 12 months.

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating of all Reviews over all time. For each review the Care Home / service is rated Excellent, Good, Satisfactory, Poor or Very Poor on a number of areas eg Staff, Management etc. The Care Home receives points for each rating as follows: Excellent = 5. Good = 4. Satisfactory = 3. Poor = 2. Very Poor = 1. These points are added up and then divided by the total number of completed ratings to generate the average rating.

    The Average Rating of 3.901 for Northbourne Court is calculated as follows: ( (19 Excellents x 5) + (30 Goods x 4) + (18 Satisfactorys x 3) + (4 Poors x 2) ) ÷ 71 Ratings = 3.901

    1. 4 points are available for the first 5 Positive Reviews, 3 points for the first Positive Review and then 0.25 Points for each of the next 4 Positive Reviews.

    2. 1 point is available for reaching a target number of Positive Reviews based on 20% of the number of registered maximum number of service users. If the target is partially reached then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home with 50 registered maximum number of service users has a target of 10 Positive Reviews, if it has 10 or more Positive Reviews it will receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews will receive 0.7 points.

The 4.208 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Northbourne Court is based on 5 positive Reviews in the last 12 months and is calculated as follows:

    1. 3 + 0.25 + 0.25 + 0.25 + 0.25 = 4

Pros: Northbourne Court is one of the best care homes in the South East. The staff - regulars - are kind, compassionate members of staff. One, in particular, is warm and compassionate with a real ability to bond and make residents feel secure. Staff overall care about the residents.

Cons: More staff are required on night duty. Some staff lack empathy. The menu needs to be overhauled - the food is not as good as it used to be.

My wife, who suffers from advanced vascular dementia has been a resident for over four years. I previously looked after her for four years myself. I live in the local area and a regular visitor to the care home as I wish to have regular contact to my dear wife. I am satisfied that she is being well cared for in a care home which is well run. I have good contact with the majority of the care workers and senior management with whom I can discuss any problems, should they arise. Continuity and recognition of their carers should be maintained. I am not in favour of moving staff around between suites! I and my family struggle with the loss of my wife to dementia but are happy that she is in the right home and environment best suited to her needs.

Our dad came to Northbourne Court 4 years ago. We were delighted with the facilities and excellent care and attention he received. Lately, this has sadly changed with the introduction of a new manager and huge change. This has seen lots of good dedicated staff leaving - which is hugely disruptive to my poor dad who suffers from dementia. Team leaders have been replaced with sub-standard "assistant managers". Cafe bar is rarely open now, as my dad is frail he could still get there for a change of scenery. We are private funders of his care. A year ago my comments below would all have been excellent.

Firstly let me state the people who actually care for my father are absolute saints. They are placed under enormous pressure through constant cost cutting and very poor wages. As my father's dependants, my sister and I have witnessed good person after good person leave to be replaced by well meaning but less capable people.
The family cafe is constantly closed with no explanation and we have to constantly remind people about my father's basic requirements. We are private clients and have seen fees increase and service deteriorate. It's heartbreaking to see my father's condition get steadily worse and leave after a visit worrying about his care.

Mum has been at Northbourne for 3 years and we couldn't wish for a better place for her. The home is clean and bright, with a lovely lounge, café and balcony and the rooms are comfortable. The staff are very friendly and very caring of mum - everyone always takes the time and makes a point of saying 'hello' and chatting with mum and her visitors. I always have complete confidence that mum is in the best place for her and receiving the best possible care. If you're looking for a place for your loved one, this is it!

Fiona Taylor, Care Manager at Northbourne Court responded to this review on 21 Mar 2017:

Thank you for your kind comments. We will pass your thanks and comments to the staff concerned.

My mother was admitted here back in Sept 2015 under respite. She is now a resident since her husband passed away. The home is always clean & tidy & staff are friendly. Mum had been happy there since the day we went to view, don't think she wanted to leave. I felt happy to have to leave her there as I felt she was in good safe hands.
Now 6 months later although her health has deteriorated she is still happy there. A big weight off your shoulders when you know your loved ones are being looked after by caring staff.
Rooms are spacious with en-suite showers. They have an area for relatives to sit & have a drink outside of the 8 suites. They allow pets to visit. There is no restrictions on visiting

Only downfall is its a care home not a nursing home. So for residents who's health deteriorates & need nursing need to be moved.
Would highly recommend this home.
