Northbourne Court care home, located in the busy shopping area of Sidcup in the London area, is a care facility providing residential care for older people living with dementia.

Northbourne provides a wealth of support services for people living with dementia, with the aim of not just providing care and comfort, but also a new, positive and more engaging stage in their lives. The team of qualified and attentive staff provide 24-hour specialist person-centred care.

Each suite has its own lounge and dining area overlooking the internal gardens or grounds. All of the bedrooms have en-suite facilities and each suite has its own colour scheme.

At the heart of Northbourne Court is its Philosophy of Care, The Eden alternative, where social interaction and engagement are encouraged and boredom is eradicated by addressing the three plagues of loneliness, helplessness and boredom within the home.

There are some good staff here but also bad. I actually wonder why people that are uncaring want to work in an industry where it is all about caring for people. I am so sad that my Nan's life ended here. She deserved better care and attention. Luckily she had a loving family. Some residents don't have
any family and are all alone. Please do your research before picking a care home. There are many review sites. Look at as many review sites as you can before you make a decision. We will all be old one day. Things really need to change in the care industry.

The carers in this home are outstanding. They are so positive and caring, I have never had a bad experience to report. My mum loves all of them. Mum has improved so much since coming to Northbourne Court that I wouldn't consider moving to anywhere else.

Since my mother has been at Northbourne Court, I have found her care exceptional. The staff are always caring, polite and friendly. The activities are very and very frequent. The summer fair was an amazing event, so inclusive, with great food, great entertainment, and so much fun for everyone.

Would not recommend it. They do not help feed, wash or care. They let them walk around naked while the workers are on their phones in the same room. There’s a lack of everything there if I could show photos I would. The food I wouldn’t even serve to my dog. It’s horrific.

Residents are treated horribly! Leaving them unattended for long periods of time, no hygiene given to the patients and they are forced to eat food that they don’t want. Staff don’t care about residents.

My mother has been a resident at Northbourne Court for over seven years. During that time I have found the staff to be very warm and caring and they have taken time to respond to my mother's needs. In my experience the standard of cleanliness and maintenance has been good and, on the whole, my mother
has enjoyed her meals. During the last few months, my mother's needs have become more complex and staff have provided excellent care and kept me informed.

As usual Northbourne Court was very well kept and all the residents seem happy. The entertainment team do very well and all the facilities are very good. The only complaint we heard at any time was about the catering, especially as the main meals are not very hot when served.

My mum has been a resident for just over a year. Care was excellent initially and I really couldn't fault it. More recently this has slipped. We no longer see the same carers that were very familiar to my family and my mum. The carers that we do see are lovely, but there is not much interaction or consistency.
I'm the main contact for my mum and I'm constantly having to chase for updates and information. Her legs and feet are in a poor state. Earlier in the year she fell and broke her hip and I have had to chase to ensure that there is follow up treatment as she was no longer able to bear any weight independently. Finally we had confirmation that she would be receiving physiotherapy but I haven't seen her walk since, as she is constantly in a wheel chair when out of her room. Lastly, her birthday was completely missed. Whilst it is not a huge issue, we have family overseas that like to see updates and I had to chase for this to happen. It was recognised a week later.

Overall I am satisfied with the care my husband receives. I have recently purchased a wheelchair for his use, as there seems to be never enough for the residents who need one. I feel that Avante should be able to provide this facility.

When choosing a care home for my mother and after looking at a few, I felt Northbourne Court would best suit her needs due to the size and modern style of the home, along with its facilities and en-suite bedrooms. Mum has been there for 18 months now, and during that time, I have been very happy with
the level of care she receives and how I am contacted immediately should there ever be a problem with regard to her health/needs.

Northbourne Court Care Home in my view and experience is one of the most professional care homes within the Bexley Borough.
My mother has been a resident since November 2022 after a series of accidents, and she has improved both physically and mentally.
The staff on Shakespeare and Dickens Suites
are kind and caring; this is the reason why my mother has improved and has settled within the home. She is a self-funder.
If my mother is self-funding for £6000 a month we do expect more.
So overall Northbourne Court Care Home needs to improve the lunchtime and teatime menu and provide soup for all for lunch and tea time, that's why I gave only 2 Stars as the food rating.

My mum passed away peacefully on Saturday 03/06/23 at Northbourne Court.
The team were absolutely wonderful, so professional, caring, kind, understanding and practical.
The care they gave my mum was brilliant. They handled her with great care as she was in such pain when moved.
They liaised with
the nurses regarding palliative care pain relief. They liaised with me and kept me up to date on the rare occasions I wasn't there.
They were extremely good to me and the family that were camped out at Mum's most of the time. One of the ladies arranged for a bed to be brought into mum's room for my brother who stayed overnight with her and was with her when she fell asleep. She arranged food for all of us. The deputies popped in to check on Mum and us. The senior care leads were fantastic, thank you, all and more. The carers are stars, all of them. Thank you to the manager and your excellent team.

My mum's care at Northbourne Court Care Home has been wonderful. The activities provided have been great, sing-a-longs, dancing, exercises and a visit to Greenwich. All the staff are friendly and helpful and my mum has had a great time here. We have always felt welcomed and the organisation of the buildings
is great, although it is big, you soon get to know everybody.

Northbourne Court is truly a wonderful place. Today was so lively - Father's day - lots of families eating lunch together, all smiles and happiness. Staff are so amazing. A special shoutout to the activities team - fabulous planning for today. We have found all staff we have encountered to be attentive
and understanding. We are so thankful dad is properly cared for, as obviously it was a huge worry at first, but now can see the genuine kindness staff show the residents. Very happy with it all.

On the day of my Mother's funeral, the senior carer came into work on her day off to shower and dress my Father and take him to my Mother's funeral. At the crematorium, the senior carer was assisted by two other senior carers. The three carers were an outstanding advert for Northbourne Court and should
all be recognised for the care and compassion they showed at a very difficult time.

Went to Northbourne Court, and we had a lovely time at their coronation party. Everyone joined in and the carers made sure nobody was left out. The staff at Northbourne Court go above and beyond to make sure everyone feels at home in their care and the atmosphere is more like a family home. In short,

My father only entered care on 17/01/2023, it took three and a half weeks for his bedlinen to change, at which point I did it. I have put his picture on his door/a label on his toilet door. He was not changed every day and several times it has been over seven days since he was given a shower. His hearing
aid has been lost. I do not feel the level of care that was promised is happening. The staff are lovely but there are not enough of them, always rushed off their feet. Two carers for fifteen people is not enough.

Paula Igwe-Chinwo, the Registered Manager of Northbourne Court, has worked in care for over 13 years, working with mental health, learning disability, autism, physical disability, stroke, dementia and nursing care. She has worked in residential care homes, nursing homes, stroke units a drug and alcohol rehabilitation centre, supported living, domiciliary care and a day centre.


Her qualifications are:

Level 5 Diploma in Leadership and Management for Health and Social Care
Level 4 Diploma in Adult Care and Management


Paula is most proud of achieving her registration as a CQC Registered Manager; she believes the morale of care staff is paramount to achieving a quality service that will enhance the wellbeing of the person(s) being cared for.
