Honey Lane Care Home provides award-winning, residential care for individuals living with dementia. The home supports those aged under and over 65, including residents with a diagnosis of early-onset dementia or experiencing memory loss.

The skilled care team, led by qualified Dementia Interpreter Angela Sacks, ensures that residents live meaningful lives by receiving person-centred care, stimulation, and social interaction. This is reflected in the home’s numerous award wins, including being national finalists at the 2025 Dementia Care Awards, and rated in the UK’s Top 20 Mid-sized Care Group 2025 by carehome.co.uk.

The vibrant atmosphere at Honey Lane is unlike any other care home, and residents are encouraged to spend their days engaged in purposeful activities tailored to their interests and abilities. These include music and movement classes, reminiscence activities, animal therapy, and weekly outings in the home’s minibus.

Sensory Namaste Care sessions offer daily soothing hand massages, calming aromatherapy and sound therapy, delivered by trained team members to promote relaxation.

Underpinned by strong community links and innovative partnerships, Honey Lane hosts a dementia support group, a Make-a-Wish initiative, and its own ‘Little Honey Bees’ intergenerational project whilst welcoming visits from local schools and charities.

Honey Lane is laid out on one floor, enabling residents to move easily and safely around the home with direct access to the beautiful central garden that offers a tranquil space, and a kitchen garden where residents can get involved in a variety of gardening activities. Dottie, the therapy cat, also calls Honey Lane her home.

The team receives extensive on-going training and professional development to support all residents to live well.

The manager and her team have created a safe, loving and stimulating environment for my dementia-suffering dad. He is treated with dignity even in those difficult times. The staff demonstrate genuine care for the residents and the catering service is as outstanding. I love that the family is able to
keep up to date with activities in the day from pictures on their social media page and there are regular opportunities for us to join the residents in special fun events throughout the year. This is in addition to the regular activities and entertainers that visit. A particular highlight for Dad is the local toddler group where toddlers, parents/carers interact with residents and break down social barriers. The staff go out of their way to create positive memories for us all. I genuinely feel that Dad has been adopted into the Honey Lane family.

I have nothing but admiration for the staff at Honey Lane. They work. Under some extreme conditions, with good humour and dedication. It is a traumatic experience to leave your loved one in a care home. The staff have made it considerably easier for me.

I cannot speak highly enough of the support and services provided by the manager and her team. They have given my mum a real boost in her life. Mum attends the care home twice a week for daycare and occasional respite care. The manager and her team take time to ensure all my mum's needs are met and
that he has the best time possible.

It was with a heavy heart that we came to the decision to move Mum into a care home back in 2022 due to the severity of her dementia condition. She has been a resident here at Honey Lane ever since. I can only thank the manager and all of the team that run Honey Lane for the way they have looked after
Mum these past couple of years. It has been very reassuring for me to know that Mum is safe and well looked after. She is treated with dignity and much love, they are her extended family! Lots of cuddles, kisses and patience from everyone is just what she needs. Whenever I visit she seems content and happy and that is the best I could hope for in the circumstances. The home is very clean, plenty of good food, regular activities and entertainment but the big plus are the caring team!
I would recommend Honey Lane to any prospective person looking at care homes, Honey Lane is able to give Mum the professional care we unfortunately can't.
Thank you, Honey Lane.

Progressing from daycare to respite to becoming a permanent resident at Honey Lane my auntie has been cared for, looked after, and loved to the very best. Since becoming a permanent resident she has improved immensely, she is more active and interacts with all the various activities and and exercises
the staff have going on for them all on a daily basis - She now has some concept of time which she didn't have previously, she has regular varied meals and they are conscious of individual dietary needs and cater accordingly.
She is always spotlessly clean and changed promptly should the need arise and nothing is too much bother for any of the staff - We are able to hold reasonable conversations with her now and she has got her sense of humour back. It's a real pleasure to go and visit which we do regularly now and see she is so settled and happy, Honey Lane always goes the extra mile for their residents and always makes the individual and their relatives feel part of the family there.

Our mum went into Honey Lane from October 2023 to December 2023. When Mum first went into respite she was really not looking forward to it. After a couple of weeks, Mum changed, she was the happiest I had seen her in years. This is all thanks to the amazing staff, always encouraging Mum to get involved
with activities and trips out and making her feel part of the Honey Lane family. The manager has been so supportive of the difficult times we had with Mum at the beginning. Senior staff members were always so helpful with her medication and understanding her needs. All the staff there were absolutely amazing to Mum, but also to us as a family, any help, questions, worries nothing was any trouble. When Mum came home, she said please when I get too bad (she has vascular dementia), please can I live in Honey Lane permanently. Of course her wishes will be granted, when it comes to it the family will have no hesitation in her moving into the home. I would highly recommend Honey Lane.

I worked 20 years in the care/hospice system, the reason we chose Honey Lane for our parents was how open it is, its service users can walk freely around and have open secure areas to get outside, they are not restricted within the care home.
Mum loved her carers and would crack jokes and be cheeky
with them, clearly showing she was comfortable and felt secure. We understood they could not make her do anything she didn't want to do, that they cannot force someone to drink or leave their room but just to encourage as best they can. Mum had many UTIs at home and when she first stayed at Honey Lane she hadn't had one in over a year.
She passed from heart failure.
Reflecting, Mum was happy, clean, safe, her skin intact. This comes from good quality care. We highly recommend Honey Lane, the manager and her team.
Reply from Angela Sacks, Home Manager at Honey Lane Care HomeThank you so much for your lovely words and for taking the time to give a different view to other family members. My Aunt spent most of her time in her room. The cleanliness of this room was a big concern for me (both in appearance and smell). For example, on one visit my Aunt was out of the room when I arrived. I was shocked to see the soiled, smelly, faeces stained cushion she'd been sitting on, it was disgusting!
As the manager wasn't available, we sent her an email enclosing a photo of the offending cushion. Eventually, her deputy replied stating ‘I do apologise for the state of the cushion, we have now replaced it with a brand-new cushion’. She went on to say that she and the manager ‘were not made aware that she was sitting on that.’ Imagine my shock on my next visit to find that the same cushion had been put in a new cover and was back on her chair! There was no 'brand new cushion'. I had been told an outright lie. When I followed up on this I was told that the manager would now be restricting communication to the NOK (who lives abroad and rarely visits) and would no longer be taking feedback from regular visitors.
Reply from Angela Sacks, Home Manager at Honey Lane Care HomeWe continue to be deeply saddened by your family’s 1-star reviews over the past couple of months as we really don’t feel they are a fair reflection of the care we provide at Honey Lane, as shown by our other consistently positive reviews.
I can, with certainty, say the cushion your Aunt had was replaced completely, as we confirmed to you and your family at the time and we have never looked to restrict communications with any family members during your Aunt’s time with us. Irrespective of who holds power of attorney, and what communication process they would personally like in place between the wider family and our team, we would always encourage all visitors to let any member of our team know straight away if they find something which needs addressing urgently, so there is no delay in it being dealt with.
Please do contact me directly if you would like to talk through anything. With warmest wishes

There are many aspects of this home that don't meet my expectations but given the character limit I'll focus on 'safety and security'. This home has no CCTV. On numerous occasions this could've helped, e.g. we (myself and my mum) were shocked to witness a resident attempting to strangle a carer. As
the carer opened the door to greet us the (male) resident tried to push her out of the way to get out. It all escalated so quickly - the carer tried to stop him, an altercation ensued. My Mum got pushed aside (as she was standing nearest the door). We were trapped on opposite sides of the vestibule - the resident had his hands around the carer's neck and was throttling her. Fortunately, other carers and the manager (whose office is close by) heard our calls for help and prised him off of the carer. The carer came by later to assure us she was OK (albeit shaken and very bruised neck and arms). However, the manager did not come by to check we were OK nor to reassure us that this was an isolated incident.
Reply from Angela Sacks, Home Manager at Honey Lane Care HomeThank you for taking the time to leave us a review, although we are very saddened to read your thoughts. Whilst we have CCTV on the entrance to our home, for enhanced safety, we don’t believe having it in place within our home to watch our residents is in line with the loving and safe environment we create for them. This is our residents’ home and we feel it is far more effective, kind and caring to have our trained and skilled team members readily on hand to support our residents in a positive way, no matter the situation. As we said in our response to your other family members, who have also left us recent reviews, we would urge you to talk to us directly about your thoughts so we can explain how we always make decisions with our residents’ ongoing wellbeing, safety and happiness at the forefront of our minds.

My mother was placed in Honey Lane for respite care as both my parents suffer from dementia and neither my brother nor myself were able to be available to them in an emergency. I would have liked both to be placed there but my father declined support. Mum had a brilliant time and joined in a lot of
the activities - Dad suffered from loneliness while she was away but it was his choice. Staff were able to update me on Mum so I could keep Dad informed. I would thoroughly recommend Honey Lane Care Home.

When my Aunt moved to Honey Lane we made it clear that she was prone to UTI's.
On most visits, there was either a jug of fluid and no glass or just an empty glass.
After raising the issue many times they agreed to monitor her fluid intake daily - should be standard care anyway you would think.
In
my Aunt's final months, there were often no fluids at all.
In July her next of kin (who is based overseas) visited the care home for an annual care review. He raised our concerns regarding the lack of fluids.
The response was that my Aunt would be unable to lift a jug on her own and they had no issues with the amount of fluids she was drinking. This was also put in writing in their report to him.
When my Aunt was admitted to hospital and subsequently died, the Doctor confirmed that she was severely dehydrated. She said my Aunt should have been getting sips of fluid every 5 mins in the days leading up to her hospital admission.
Overall we are disgusted with the level of care my Aunt had received.
Reply from Angela Sacks, Home Manager at Honey Lane Care HomeFirstly, please accept our heartfelt condolences at the loss of your Aunt, and be assured she was very much loved and is missed by all of our team here. Had a lovely time with my dad on his birthday, the care home staff made a fuss of Dad buying him a gift, a birthday balloon and a card. The cook baked him a chocolate cake which was shared among the residents. What with all the other regular day trips and other fantastic activities the staff arrange
for the residents, I think this is a fantastic care home and would recommend it to anyone who needs a love one cared for.

Overall Experience 1.0 out of 5
As my sister's primary caregiver, it was up to me to look out for her. I raised the same concerns repeatedly. Each time I was assured they'd be rectified but it didn't happen. After 18 months I realised verbal feedback was making no difference, especially as the manager/deputy manager was rarely available
to speak with directly. So I put my concerns in an email. The manager apologised again and promised to put a plan in place to rectify. Two weeks later, same issues. I sent a follow-up, this time including photos. At this point, the manager spoke to the next of kin (who lives overseas and rarely visits) and agreed that he was now to be the only person who could communicate with the home! Two weeks before my sister died I discovered that I'd been removed from the emergency contact list. Thankfully I became aware of this 'error' just in time to get her next of kin to rectify it. If I hadn't done so I'd have been unaware that my sister had been taken into hospital and she'd have been alone when she needed me most.
Reply from Angela Sacks, Home Manager at Honey Lane Care HomeThank you for taking the time to leave us a review – although we are so saddened to read your comments. Please be assured we will always immediately address any concerns about our residents’ health and wellbeing, irrespective of whether these are raised in person or via email. Sadly sometimes, due to a variety of reasons and in spite of us working closely with external health professionals such as district nurses, a resident’s condition might not improve.
When a resident has someone with power of attorney and is their next of kin, that person has to be our main point of contact, unless they let us know they’re happy for us to speak to a different family member or friend. We understand, at times, this can be difficult for other family members but it’s important that we follow this approach. We are of course happy to chat to you in more detail about your comments – both myself and my deputy will always make ourselves available if we can and are happy to contact you if you’d prefer.

My mother was placed in Honey Lane Care Home after a difficult few months in hospital, including a failed discharge back to her flat, and she's now staying there indefinitely. I immediately saw a positive change in her from the day she arrived at Honey Lane. Whenever I visit, she's clean and well-dressed,
and she eats generous portions of good food and enjoys the supply of snacks.
My mother can be resistant to coming out of her room and socialising, but the team there know that time in the common area is good for her stimulation and well-being, and they strike a sensible balance between encouraging her out and letting her stay on her own. She sometimes takes part in organised activities, and I was amazed to see pictures of her recently enjoying fish and chips and ice cream at Southend - could never have sorted that when she was at home.
The staff are energetic, positive and caring; I see their experience and skill - really grateful for everything they're doing for my mother.

I cannot thank everyone at Honey Lane Care Home enough for all they do for my dad. When we first took Dad there he was very withdrawn and depressed, he wasn't the Dad we all knew. He has only been with Honey Lane a short while and he has come back to life, he is my dad again. He even remembers short-term
memories before he couldn't recall anything recent, and if shown a picture of things/places he went or did he wouldn't remember, but recently he has been recalling places he has been with the team at Honey Lane which has absolutely blown my mind and my partners. The activities and places they go to weekly are so great! They really keep the mind busy and the faces smiling!
Every single person at Honey Lane has always been so lovely towards myself, friends and family when visiting, very welcoming and gives you a sense of being at home when you're going to visit your loved one. They have a real sense of 'family' and you can see how much they care and love every single resident.

Current Review Score: 9.8 (9.829)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.8 (9.829) out of 10 for Honey Lane Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 22 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 22 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.829 for Honey Lane Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (223 Excellents x 5) + (35 Goods x 4) + (5 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 263 Ratings = 4.829
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Honey Lane Care Home is based on 22 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 41 registered maximum number of service users is 8.2, which has been reached with 22 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Angie Sacks

Job Title: Home Manager Joined: 2022

Our Home Manager Angie joined the Carebase family at Honey Lane in 2013. Showing a natural flair for care, she quickly progressed to the role of Senior before moving in 2015 to our sister home, 1 Sewardstone Close, which cares for adults with an acquired brain injury. Over the course of the next three years, she was promoted from a Team Leader to the home’s Head of Care, working closely with multidisciplinary teams including speech and language therapists and psychologists. Angie returned to Honey Lane in February 2022 as Deputy Manager.

Angie is a Qualified Dementia Interpreter and brings a wealth of experience supporting residents, their families and our teams. She is passionate about truly understanding the differing needs of residents to deliver personalised care that enables them to live well with dementia.

Speaking about her role at Honey Lane, Angie said: “We support residents to live a life which is meaningful to them and one where they are able to spend their time doing the things they love. It’s a privilege to get to know our residents and nothing makes me happier than seeing them content and well looked-after.”

In her spare time, Angie enjoys spending time with friends and family, reading, music, and going to the theatre.
