I am basing this review on my visit to the care home today and with an issue last week which has made me feel very disappointed with The Lodge. My mother was left on the bed with food spilling out of her mouth onto her nightdress after she fell asleep. My mother has dementia. Last week my mother was
left lying on a wet sheet!
Reply from Lisa Pinner, Home Manager at The Lodge Care HomeThe Lodge Care Home takes the concerns raised very seriously and a full and thorough investigation has already been completed. Prompt action was taken and the necessary disciplinary process has been followed. Action plans, lessons learned and further training has been shared with the staff team.

In the year or so that my uncle has been a resident, we, as a family, have been able to relax knowing he is being well cared for by all the staff who genuinely care for his physical and mental well-being. They are all so friendly and helpful, and on his return from a short stay in the hospital, welcome
him back with genuine warmth, this goes for management too, taking the time and trouble to make sure he settled in and had all he needed.
Reply from Lisa Pinner, Home Manager at The Lodge Care HomeThank you for taking the time to write a review for The Lodge. We are pleased to hear that as a family you are happy with the service we provide and that your uncle is well looked after. Thank you for your kind words, and I will ensure I share your positive comments with the staff.

Overall, we are very happy with the care and support given to my uncle, who is now in his second year at The Lodge. In particular, staff are kind and caring. The food is good. Access to medical support (GP, district nurse) is relatively swift, and communication with us, as next of kin, is prompt and
thorough. Staff are friendly, welcoming and understanding. There is a family atmosphere, which my uncle really appreciates.

My mother needed to move into 24-hour care due to having a number of falls, together with increasing signs of dementia. She has been made welcome and has settled in well into her new environment. The activity support is excellent and she enjoyed outside trips.
The staff are kind, caring and professional.
The management team is very supportive and I really appreciate the communication they provide - they respond quickly to my questions or concerns, liaise with outside organisations and give me a lot of confidence that they are on top of everything.

As soon as I visited The Lodge, I knew it was the place I wanted Mum to be. She has been a resident since Dec 23 and we can't find fault in the care and attention she has received. It's been wonderful to experience peace of mind knowing she is well looked after. The environment is clean and bright and
we always enjoy our visits. All the staff are friendly and take time to chat and get to know us. A special mention for all the excellent activities to keep the residents occupied and engaged. If we had known that taking Mum into residential care would be like this, I'm sure we would have been able to tackle this tricky step so much sooner. Thank you to all at The Lodge.

Thank you so much to all the staff at The Lodge Care Home. You all have been fantastic with my dad. Yes, he can be grumpy, can’t we all but you are there to pick him up and you all do. From the front desk to all care nurses, the chefs, managers, maintenance and anyone else who I may have forgotten.
You all deserve to be mentioned. Well done all and keep up the good work, I could not recommend The Lodge Care Home any higher than I am now. Great location, and great staff and the food must be decent as dad has put on a little weight! Excellent stuff, you should all be proud of what you are doing, looking after the elderly! See you soon.

My only qualification for writing this review is that I tried to look after my wife for 2 years or more as her dementia progressed until she went into The Lodge. I do think well of The Lodge and I'm very grateful for the way they do their job. All the staff seem to be fond of the residents. The residents,
not only my wife seem to be well looked after. One could wish there were more staff but there probably are enough.

Current Review Score: 9.5 (9.495)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.5 (9.495) out of 10 for The Lodge Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.5 out of 5 from 24 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 21 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.495 for The Lodge Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (199 Excellents x 5) + (51 Goods x 4) + (17 Satisfactorys x 3) + (6 Poors x 2) + (10 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 283 Ratings = 4.495
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for The Lodge Care Home is based on 21 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 4
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 45 registered maximum number of service users is 9, which has been reached with 21 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Job Title: Home Manager Joined: 2014

My career within care started in 1989 when I have appointed the role of Care Assistant in a care home setting close to Potters Bar, Hertfordshire – an opportunity that led to my promotion to Assistant Manager in 1993. 1999 was a landmark in my category, one that saw my progress on to become Acting Home Manager, before being appointed a registered Home Manager in 2004. With a great number of years of experience, I felt confident enough to apply for the same role at The Lodge in 2014 – one that to date inspired me with a continual learning curve, and better fulfilled my passion for delivering person-specific residential and specialist dementia care.
