Stanborough Lodge is a stunning Victorian style country home standing on a 3/4 acre plot of picturesque gardens, close to Stanborough Lakes in Welwyn Garden City. A residential care home offering a home from home setting and specialising in dementia care.

The vision is to provide the best quality care and deliver an activity programme created to benefit physical, mental and social well-being. With a dedicated team of care staff who are trained in all aspects of care and are all experienced in supporting residents living with dementia.

Providing 23 furnished rooms, all of which benefit from having en-suite facilities. Traditional meals provide a balanced diet and ensure healthy eating for all residents. The large country garden is the perfect space for leisurely walks, entertaining , sports and outdoor games.

The Activity Programme focuses on mind, body and soul through a range of activities such as fitness classes, musical entertainment, arts and crafts, baking, flower arranging and reminiscence games. By getting involved with the activity programme resident's see improvements in their physical health and their emotional well-being.

Providing residential, respite, dementia and palliative care packages tailored to the needs of each individual within a homely setting.

My dad has been a resident for almost two months now and he has settled in wonderfully well. The staff are so caring and patient and can't do enough for him. There are constant activities so the residents don't become bored. It's like a big family all living together. Visitors are made to feel very
welcome and part of the family.

My brother has been at Stanborough Lodge for a good few years now and I've always found him to be well cared for and looked after. He always tells me that he is happy there and never complains.
They have improved the home greatly since the Manager has been in charge, including redecorating the home
and putting in new flooring.
My brother enjoys all the entertainment provided and overseen by the activity coordinator and he enjoys all the parties and events that they do, and we also enjoy attending them.
I've always found the carers very attentive to his needs and always do their best to look after him.

My aunt was at Stanborough for 7 and a 1/2 years. After the new manager started things improved a lot.
There is a good atmosphere, and the staff are very helpful and kind.
My Aunt was happy there, and enjoyed the food.
When I was there at the end of her life, for 6 days I was able to observed how
caring and respectful the staff were. I was also glad the activities manager looked in on my bedridden aunt every day.
The manager was extremely helpful too, helping with all kinds of things and always very communicative.

My mother spent two weeks of respite care in Stanborough Lodge - her first experience of staying in a care home. The manager made a lot of effort to ensure that the room met her mobility needs. All the staff were very welcoming, kind and caring towards my mother. My husband and I were able to go on
holiday, confident that she was being well looked after. Space permitting, we hope to make a repeat booking in a few months.

From the moment you step in the door, you are welcomed into the Stanborough Lodge family. My mother-in-law has been here for 6+ months and whilst it was hard for her to settle initially (she is in her 90s, has dementia and this was her first experience of living in care), the manager and carers have
gone out of their way to ensure she is safe, happy and well looked after. My mother-in-law had been in hospital for 3 months prior and had lost the use of her legs – however, with lots of encouragement and support from the staff, she is now able to walk unaided again.
The manager and her team take the care of their residents very seriously. They listen to all feedback and deal with it quickly and professionally.
I would have no hesitation in recommending Stanborough Lodge. We are so grateful for their support during what has been a very challenging period. We trust them explicitly and know, based on first-hand experience, how hard they work to provide the best level of care for all their residents.

My thanks and appreciation to all the staff at Stanborough Lodge for the dedication and kindness they have shown in caring for my mum over the past two years. Sadly, my mum passed away in early January 2024, but the professionalism and support of the staff over the two years have been exceptional. What
was a very difficult last year for my mum was made the best it could be by the empathy shown by everyone, not only my mum but also me. I felt totally reassured that all her needs were met. The staff are very well trained and work as a team. I could not have asked for better care for my mum. Stanborough Lodge is a happy, friendly, caring place to be.

As a friend of a resident at Stanborough Lodge, I m always given a warm welcome when I visit, I’m escorted to her room and the nurse/carer always asks if there is anything she needs, the registered home manager does a wonderful job managing the home, where the residents are nurtured in a very warm,

I would like to express my deepest thanks to the registered home manager and all the staff at Stanborough Lodge for the care and time spent with Mum. My mother sadly passed over on Saturday 2nd September 2023, aged 103. Her last few years were made easier for her, being there, they are a really dedicated
group of carers, it must be tough to do what they do everyday but they cope really well. Food is home cooked to a very high standard, also never any complaints from mum. The home itself is always clean and fresh, very homely, more like an old fashioned guest house. No regrets and a good choice from us. Thank you all again from all my mother's family.

My mother spent four weeks in respite care at Stanborough Lodge and, as a family, we were so relieved to have found a place so caring and safe for her, in which to recover. The manager is the best of any I have encountered, taking a personal interest in all the residents' welfare. Mum's room was lovely
and the staff very kind and gentle in their approach. I cannot recommend this home enough.

Mum has now been at Stanborough Lodge for over six months and we honestly feel that she couldn’t be in a better place. It was difficult for Mum to transition and settle initially but the staff were supportive and it was clear to us that they really care and are flexible around Mum's needs. Their communication
with us was reassuring as this first part was difficult for us too. The communication has continued to be excellent. Mum is clearly happy now she has settled and we feel welcomed and ‘part of the family’ when we visit. It is a relief to see the same friendly and welcoming staff faces each time and seeing Mum’s reaction to the staff reassures us that she is well looked after and with a sense of humour too! Mum enjoys getting involved with the activities and it’s good to see them going from strength to strength as new ideas and events are introduced that clearly keep residents entertained and their families included.

After viewing other facilities for my mum that were much larger and part of a chain of care homes, I immediately felt differently when I walked through the door at Stanborough Lodge. This place felt warm, friendly and homely. We decided to place Mum here initially for two weeks of respite care, and
we quickly realised she needed more care than we thought and has now been a resident for almost three months. From day one, we were impressed with the staff and how they handled a very difficult situation. The current manager is an excellent communicator, and nothing has been too much trouble; everything has been dealt with speedily and efficiently considering Mum moved from a different county. It’s great to see the same faces when we visit, and we are always made to feel very welcome. Thank you.

My Mum was put in end-of-life care at Stanborough Lodge two weeks ago sadly she passed away on Sunday. The staff on duty were so caring and were with her at the time she passed they phoned and I was able to go and see her.
All of the staff have been very caring and looked after my Mum very well I could
not have wanted a nicer team looking after her, they are dedicated to their job. The Manager and her team are so welcoming and the home makes you feel at home.

The care offered to my late father has been consistently good and was most sensitive to his needs as his health recently deteriorated very severely, necessitating a hospital stay after which he returned on an end-of-life pathway, which the staff implemented with care and efficiency over his few last
days.
This was no 'one off' effort, both my parents having been residents since June 2017 and my late mother until her death in April 2021. A double room was made available for my parents, and they were thus able to be together, which materially added to their comfort and enjoyment. The staff brought us through Covid with the best efforts made to enable visiting, and I was able to be at my mother's bedside as she died.
And finally, this is a quiet and restful home, with no constant alarms and buzzers; the management and staff make a 'home-from-home' with their kindness and consideration. Strongly recommended.

Meet Joanna Sage – Registered Manager at Stanborough Lodge Care Home:


Joanna Sage’s journey into care began with a deeply personal experience: supporting a family member in need. That early exposure sparked a lifelong passion for helping others, especially older people, and laid the foundation for her career in care.

Joanna joined Stanborough Lodge in 2021 as a Care Coordinator. Her dedication and leadership quickly shone through, earning her a promotion to Deputy Manager by November of the same year. In May 2023, she proudly became the Home’s Registered Manager after completing her Level 5 qualification and successfully passing the rigorous CQC interview. She credits the unwavering support of the RMD Care Directors for believing in her and encouraging her every step of the way.

What Joanna Loves Most:
Joanna thrives on the strong sense of teamwork at Stanborough Lodge. “It feels like it's home from home,” she says, “not just a workplace.” Together, the team creates a warm, welcoming environment where residents feel safe, valued, and truly cared for.

Our Care Coordinator Neethu is passionate about care and providing the best service possible to our residents. Joining the team in November 2020 as a Senior she was promoted to the position of Care Coordinator in April 2024.
