Stanborough Lodge is a stunning Victorian style country home standing on a 3/4 acre plot of picturesque gardens, close to Stanborough Lakes in Welwyn Garden City. A residential care home offering a home from home setting and specialising in dementia care.

The vision is to provide the best quality care and deliver an activity programme created to benefit physical, mental and social well-being. With a dedicated team of care staff who are trained in all aspects of care and are all experienced in supporting residents living with dementia.

Providing 23 furnished rooms, all of which benefit from having en-suite facilities. Traditional meals provide a balanced diet and ensure healthy eating for all residents. The large country garden is the perfect space for leisurely walks, entertaining , sports and outdoor games.

The Activity Programme focuses on mind, body and soul through a range of activities such as fitness classes, musical entertainment, arts and crafts, baking, flower arranging and reminiscence games. By getting involved with the activity programme resident's see improvements in their physical health and their emotional well-being.

Providing residential, respite, dementia and palliative care packages tailored to the needs of each individual within a homely setting.

Fantastic care home; even though it is a small home, it is always clean and tidy. I was always kept advised of every step of my late father's care right up to the morning he passed away. They have made me welcome on every visit, even during the past four days of dad passing. My sincere thanks go to
the manager, the care staff and the activities coordinator, who knew Dad loved a quiz, and even more so, to the carer who sat with Dad during the night that he passed away as she didn't want to leave him by himself during his last hours. On Dad's admittance to the home approximately two years ago, he was made to feel like he was part of this big family, and this also included myself. Every member of staff has shown me compassion and kindness. I would highly recommend Stanborough Lodge and its staff.

My mum has now been here for 12 months, and she loves it.
The manager and her team are very caring and are always there if you need them.
Dealing with dementia is very hard on the family, so it always puts you at ease if you know your family member is being looked after when you're not there.
My
mum has just been moved downstairs, and her room has been newly decorated, and it's lovely looking out onto the garden.
The manager and I have a great relationship, and I know I can go to her with anything, and she is always there to listen.
You know if a friend or family member goes to this home, they are well looked after.

The manager at Stanborough Lodge made the difficult decision to place my mother on an end-of-life care pathway about ten days before she died. It was a perceptive decision and a necessary one, which reflected the attention to detail that all staff have given to my mother over the eight years that she
was resident. I was fortunate enough to get a call within an hour of my mother's passing and I was touched by the depth to which the night staff mourned her loss. In addition to getting the technicalities of high-quality senior care right, the difference at Stanborough Lodge is their even-handed and inclusive devotion towards and respect for each of their residents. Under the current manager the staff team convey a morale and a sense of mutual support which gives a strong sense that each of them views their work as a vocation rather than just a means to an end.

Excellent welcome by the activity coordinator, and Covid swabs and precautions were carried out. I was able to speak to the manager about a room transfer to a single room and viewed two very pleasant, newly refurbished rooms. There have been other areas of new decorations, and the library and sensory
areas are very good additions. All the staff I met were friendly and respectful to residents and visitors. There is a genuine, caring atmosphere throughout the home.

I wish to recommend Stanborough Lodge and its staff in the highest possible terms.
My mother moved into Stanborough Lodge in July 2014. My father had just died. My mother had fallen and fractured her leg. Under these challenging circumstances, we were delighted to obtain a place for Mum at Stanborough
Lodge. Mum immediately liked it there. The staff treated her with heartfelt care and innate respect. As her son living and working in Germany, it was particularly important for me to know that Mum was well looked after.
From July 2014 until the pandemic, I was able to visit Mum every 4-6 weeks. It was quickly apparent that Stanborough Lodge had become Mum's home and the staff her friends. This was crucial during the pandemic. I cannot begin to express my gratitude to the staff of Stanborough Lodge for their wonderful care of my mother during that time.
Mum died peacefully at Stanborough Lodge - as she had always wished.

Sadly my father passed at the care home. The staff were very respectful and informative. The staff are very kind and caring. My father had ill health, he was only here for three months, but in this time, I know he was very well cared for and looked after.

My mother has been in Stanborough Lodge for three years and has been looked after by the carers very well. Covid has now made her seriously demented, and she now is nearly blind and almost totally deaf; her determination to be independent has kept her going.

My dad liked living there and planned on dying there, but that didn't work out for him. I found the staff helpful and thoughtful, the rooms comfortable and a nice garden. It's a nice place to end your days.

Since my mother has been in Stanborough Lodge care, I have never had any worries or concerns over the home or my mother's care. The staff have always been very friendly and informative. I was more worried about the staff's treatment by my mother when she first arrived. She has now settled down and shows
respect for them, and they have always been respectful to her. It has a warm, friendly feeling to the whole place.

My uncle has been a resident now for around five years. I have always found the staff very caring and helpful. My uncle's health has improved since he has been a resident, especially where his diabetes is concerned. I was pleased to find him so well today, as I haven't been to see him for about 8-months
due to Covid restrictions. Also, the decorations are in need of sprucing up the tied and dated decor, which will cheer up everyone. The staff work very hard and are always helpful.

My mother has been a resident at Stanborough Lodge for three years. During that time, the care has been excellent, nothing is too much trouble for the staff. She enjoys the meals which are cooked on the premises. There is a high level of staff continuity, most of them having been at the Lodge throughout
Mother's stay. I am kept well informed and have been very impressed by the commitment of the management and staff to keep everyone safe during the covid crisis.

My aunt has been at Stanborough Lodge for over 4-years, following the death of her husband. She is now 97-years-old and unable to look after herself in her own home. The home was extremely welcoming and was very efficient in arranging her transfer from the hospital. The care home is small and relatively
modest (not like a flash corporate purpose-built place) which suits my aunt well. She is reluctant to socialise, but the staff have done their best to encourage her and meet her needs. She is very comfortable, enjoys the food and is well looked after. The core team of staff has remained unchanged in the time my aunt has been resident, and staff turnover is not an issue. I believe the team has performed particularly well during the Covid pandemic, keeping residents and staff as safe as possible.

There were things going on each day that were enjoyable, but this was only for a short time, the rest of the day was boring. Rooms were ok, but there was little hot water. Taps would have to run for about 15-minutes before the water became warm. Staff friendly and worked very hard.

Our number one criteria when selecting a care home was the trust we would have in the staff. At Stanborough we found them all to be excellent and the continuity of the staff was reassuring and they are all approachable and happy to discuss with us any aspect of Mum's care. My mother has vascular dementia and has been a resident at Stanborough Lodge since 2015 when she could no longer live independently. I can’t speak highly enough of the management and staff and the quality and professionalism of the care they provide. My mother is cared for with kindness and respect.
She is kept safe and offered flexibility day to day, for example, in what she would like to eat and how she would like to spend her day. She always looks lovely in clean clothes, brushed hair and painted nails and the home is a warm and welcoming place that always smells fresh.
The home does not use agency staff which means there is a sense of belonging and pride among the carers.
Relatives are welcomed and communication on any issues is well managed. From my many conversations with the staff, I have confidence in their knowledge, training and experience of caring for people suffering from dementia.

I can't speak highly enough of Stanborough Lodge.
The communal areas are spacious and always smell fresh.
The staff are hardworking, conscientious, professional and caring, treating residents with kindness, respect and dignity.
I am confident my aunt is well looked after and I will be informed of
any issues.
Relatives are welcomed and included in Summer and Christmas outings and activities.
I have no regrets about choosing this home for my loved one.

My mother is well cared for at Stanborough Lodge. When I visit she always appears clean with clean clothes. The staff are very caring and friendly. They are informative and ready to answer questions and contact me with any concerns. Meal times are regular and the menu appears to be pleasing. Sometimes
my mother is helped with feeding and usually needs hot or cold drinks held for her. Medication is applied as per GP's instructions. I feel I can rest assured that my mother is in safe hands and looked after very well.

We find Stanborough Lodge a very good care home for our mother to reside in. She has dementia and seems to be very happy and contented in her surroundings. We have had problems in the past before she came here but the staff seem to care and deal really well with her various conditions. She settled in
really well and we feel assured that she is being well looked after.

Meet Joanna Sage – Registered Manager at Stanborough Lodge Care Home:


Joanna Sage’s journey into care began with a deeply personal experience: supporting a family member in need. That early exposure sparked a lifelong passion for helping others, especially older people, and laid the foundation for her career in care.

Joanna joined Stanborough Lodge in 2021 as a Care Coordinator. Her dedication and leadership quickly shone through, earning her a promotion to Deputy Manager by November of the same year. In May 2023, she proudly became the Home’s Registered Manager after completing her Level 5 qualification and successfully passing the rigorous CQC interview. She credits the unwavering support of the RMD Care Directors for believing in her and encouraging her every step of the way.

What Joanna Loves Most:
Joanna thrives on the strong sense of teamwork at Stanborough Lodge. “It feels like it's home from home,” she says, “not just a workplace.” Together, the team creates a warm, welcoming environment where residents feel safe, valued, and truly cared for.
