Appleby House in Epsom, Surrey, is an 'Outstanding'-rated (April 2019), award-winning care home offering an innovative approach to older people's care, including dementia care.

Residents are supported to lead an independent, active and fulfilling life, with opportunities to enjoy hobbies and discover new interests. Art sessions have transformed the home and led to inspirational outcomes for residents – Appleby House even has its own art gallery and studio now.

The team strives to enhance the home in every way for residents. The traditional hair salon now has a nail bar and barber area, and an ice cream parlour was added to improve residents’ nutrition. Residents are encouraged to express their views and wishes, and individuality is celebrated.

My Mum moved to Appleby House Care Home in April 2025. She has Alzheimer's and Mixed Dementia. All of the care staff have been so welcoming, they are so friendly and helpful. The manager and Assistant Manager have been amazing. One of the really encouraging things for me is how long some of the team
have worked there. Some have been there 20 years plus. I visit almost every day and so can see that the care home is very well managed. Mum isn't the most sociable of people, and so prefers to stay in her room, which is happily accommodated. It's very easy to see why this care home is rated outstanding.

I have been so impressed with how my uncle has been looked after by all at the Home.
He came in for respite and was in a very sad place.
When he had the opportunity to become a permanent resident we were so pleased he chose to stay.
He has gone from a frail 94 year old who was not eating, always
in bed and did not communicate. To the smiling, chatty and laughing uncle we all knew.
This is a testament to the patience, knowledge, kindness and charisma of all who work with him.
This has saved his life and completely taken our worries away.
I can not thank you all enough.

My mum has been at Appleby House for 2 months now. From the moment we entered the door we felt the warmth of the care team as they all rallied around to make Mum and us feel comfortable and welcome. We are very happy with the care that mum receives and feel that mum is in a very safe environment
where she can feel included. Mum participates in all the activities available and we, her children, also feel included and kept up to date of everything she does. Thank you to all the team for looking after our Mum xx

My elderly relative has been in Appleby for approximately 2years and as we live in the opposite end of the country it's difficult to get to see her so we rely on the staff to look after her. She's obviously very happy as we have tried to get her to move down to Devon where she would be able to have
more visitors and we would be able to do more for her, but she refuses to move. The staff and management are so helpful whenever we contact them for help they just make our request possible. On her 100th birthday the staff arranged a wonderful party for which she and us really enjoyed. They also arranged for her to visit the Natural History Museum which is something she wanted to do, although she backed out at the last minute and everyone was disappointed. Time is given to listen to her and they try to give her what she wants. Also we are kept informed by management on her needs.

Our aunt has been in Appleby house for over 1 year . She is treated with dignity and respect.
She had her 100th birthday and the home gave a lovely party.
The managers and staff are very friendly and approachable they have helped and advised us when needed. They know each residents little ways , which
shows they care.
There is always some activity for the residents to participate .
In the entrance hall there is always some new colourful art work to greet you.
We know aunty is well cared for and safe which is really important as we live some distance away .

Our Mom has been at Appleby House for 2 months and all the staff have been so kind and caring to her, answering any questions we have. We were all worried about our Mom not settling, and at first she was asking to come home, but after the first month she has not asked to come home and seems to have
accepted being there. We feel this is due to how caring everyone is, not only the individual carers but all the management and staff. Appleby has a homely feel and is kept very clean with lots of colourful artwork on the walls. Our mum looks forward to meal times and the chef has even made special spicy foods for her which she enjoys. They have an excellent daily activities programme and it is reassuring to us that Mum joins in most of them , and the staff will come and find her and encourage her to join and ensure she is included. Based on the first 2 months we feel that our mum is in a safe and very caring environment and thank the staff for all their support.

Care UK do a fantastic job of looking after my Father who is very happy in Appleby House. All the staff are great and always have time for a chat with both my Father and myself despite often being under pressure and working in some trying circumstances sometimes! Most of them can make an excellent cup
of coffee too!

Since my sister has been a resident at Appleby House she has not been happier. The management & staff go above the normal to make her & all us relatives feel so welcome & at ease when we visit. The food & facility are amazing & nothing is to much trouble. As a family it is the best thing we ever
done for her. As the management & staff really care about her & her family too.. Wouldn't want her to be anywhere else to be totally honest.

Appleby has given my aunt a new lease of life. Throughout her life my aunt had always been very busy, always planning the next thing, and at Appleby, she has been enabled to become that person again.
Wellbeing at Appleby is every bit as important as physical health, I love logging in to the app and
seeing yet another picture of my aunt smiling (and sometimes dancing) while she is in the art room or the allotment or in with the toddler's play session, or just having a chat and a cuppa. Visiting in person is lovely too, I am met with smiles and warmth, it is a very happy place to be and is the perfect fit for my aunt.

My relative has only been a resident for a few months and was reluctant to move from the family home but has settled in so well. We can't praise the staff enough for their kindness, compassion and most importantly laughter. We have one happy man that's for sure!
The home is welcoming, friendly and
always has activities going on. As a family we have been made to feel part of the place and we don't just go to see Dad - we go to see the staff too!

Such a lovely environment and fantastically caring staff. My mother is a temporary resident for 6 weeks respite care, but nothing is too much trouble for the staff. The facilities are top-notch too with a lovely bedroom and the common areas are just the right size. It is a large residential home, but
the way it is organised into separate units stops the size being overwhelming. Mum is treated with dignity at all times and kept engaged with many activities. All in all I wouldn't hesitate in recommending Appleby House to anyone.

Although an old building it radiates a comforting aura.
The staff are always polite, helpful and from what I have observed over three months, patient and caring.
Cleanliness is high, visitors welcome, and the staff have to work with the relatives as well as the residents during a very trying and emotional
period.

The staff at Appleby House have been amazing to my mum. Engaging her in various activities and making her feel cared for and welcome. One member of staff has taken her various times to her church coffee morning allowing my mum to reconnect with friends. Her general overall health and well-being have

Appleby House is the most amazing place. My mum just arrived for respite care (I hope and pray she can stay there). She has settled so well and it is such a caring and happy environment. I have visited a number of care homes and Appleby is by far the very best I have encountered. All the carers go out
of their way to make all the residents feel happy and reassured. It is an extremely encouraging and supportive environment and the care that I have witnessed being given to each and every resident is unbelievable. One staff member is absolutely fantastic and efficient; her and the carers wanted to know about Mum's life history which is so important and they take the time to listen. I understand that Appleby has received an 'outstanding' report and I can understand why. Nothing is too much trouble. My mum is being encouraged to take part in all the activities and the carers are so incredibly caring and kind to her. I cannot recommend Appleby House highly enough. What a fantastic place! Thank you.

Exceptional care for my mother. All staff work together with the residents to create a very friendly and caring environment, including visitors. It is a very clean and cheerful home with plenty of activities and stimulation. Her room is always immaculate and cosy. Well done to all at Appleby House!

Appleby House staff have been my saviour and given me my life back. My wonderful father diagnosed with mixed dementia had a rapid decline after two stays in hospital, I was very reluctant to put him in a home, but realised the decision was out of my hands, I needed him safe. And safe, loved and cared
for he is. The staff are totally amazing with Dad, watching him constantly, and making sure he is comfortable, clean, feed and hydrated. Slowly introducing him to activities.. they check he doesn’t have UTI’s as he has a catheter, sort out all his medical needs which takes away the pressure from myself. Appleby is his new home and when he is lucid through his confusion he knows and feels safe and happy. I know he also loves the staff, especially flirting with the women . He has a sparkle again and that’s lovely to see.. Thank you everyone at Appleby

I can't thank the staff for the care they have given to my mum since her arrival in 2023. All staff are very friendly and welcoming. Mum has been through a difficult time and Mum's carers have really got her back on track right down to organising her hospital appointments, which the previous home had
failed to do. If I could give my own and my mum's experience at Appleby more than a 10/10 I would! Highly recommended.

Since my mum's admission to Appleby House Care Home she has thrived, especially in her appearance and apart from her behaviour associated with her dementia and not understanding why she is there, she seems quite happy. Her room is currently en-suite and is well maintained. I think the home should invest
in proper drinks machines though as the choice of drinks for residents and their visitors is basic and old fashioned.

Job Title: Home Manager Joined: 2014

I haven’t been at Appleby House long – I joined as home manager in early 2014 – but I’m completely committed to meeting the challenge of making this home the care home of choice for people in the Epsom area. I want us to have full occupancy and a waiting list!


As home manager I’m passionate about providing the best possible care to residents to enhance their lives. I love involving residents and my team in how things are run. I believe my role is to lead by example to create a good culture at Appleby House. That can come down to things like how I speak to people, being smiling and positive and being a good team player. It’s my job to motivate staff and promote their development through training and supervision. I thrive on working with my team to bring about change – stretching them and seeing positive change happen.


I have to say that the best part of the day for me is walking around the home talking to residents and staff. We always have a good laugh and it’s the time when I get the inspiration to make any changes that are needed. But what I don’t need to change at Appleby House is the terrific atmosphere: it’s really friendly and welcoming, and new people visiting us are always really struck by that. We also offer a huge range of quality care services – particularly around dementia care – and this sets us apart from our competitors too.


I’ve lots of plans for Appleby House over the coming months, including increasing the social activities for residents, improving the dining experience for them and sprucing up the home. There’s lots to do but I’ve a great team, so I’m confident we can make it happen.
