Appleby House in Epsom, Surrey, is an 'Outstanding'-rated (April 2019), award-winning care home offering an innovative approach to older people's care, including dementia care.

Residents are supported to lead an independent, active and fulfilling life, with opportunities to enjoy hobbies and discover new interests. Art sessions have transformed the home and led to inspirational outcomes for residents – Appleby House even has its own art gallery and studio now.

The team strives to enhance the home in every way for residents. The traditional hair salon now has a nail bar and barber area, and an ice cream parlour was added to improve residents’ nutrition. Residents are encouraged to express their views and wishes, and individuality is celebrated.

an agreed hourly charge for this service.

My husband went into Appleby House in June this year, and he is very happy
and contented. All the staff are absolutely brilliant, they are caring, kind, respectful, and
treat all residents with dignity. Also, keep the families well informed as to how their loved ones are doing. It's a hard decision
to make when your loved ones go into care, but we certainly made the right choice by choosing Appleby House, my husband is safe, well, and happy.

There's always a warm welcome from the staff, who are also keen to assist with any queries. All the residents appear well cared for and the staff genuinely caring and conscientious in their duties. The premises are well maintained and clean. Personal items like pictures can be displayed in residents'
rooms, helping to make them feel more at home.

Our beloved mother suffered a traumatic experience at another care home, resulting in her hospitalisation for over a month for an injury of a broken hip. The family's confidence, trust, and faith had been shattered, doubting if we could ever find a home of care. Eventually, we found Appleby House and
its outstanding team, who understood that although our mother has dementia, she is still very human and is to be treated with dignity and respect. The compassion, professionalism, collaboration with the Appleby House management team, especially the Deputy Manager and Home Manager have enabled the family to rebuild trust that there are homes of care. Our mother is thriving at Appleby House, thanks to the outstanding team in the 'Da Vinci' suite who always exude positivity, friendliness, and teamwork, and who know and understand our mother. We cannot thank Appleby House enough for their outstanding care and we celebrate being part of the Appleby House family.

Making the decision to get Mum into residential care during the Covid 19 pandemic was one of the hardest experiences I’ve had. The Deputy Manager at Appleby House however was so supportive, understanding, patient(!) and professional, that the process was straightforward and had a very positive outcome.
Over 2 months in, Mum is settled and well cared for. She is dressed beautifully, washed with hair styled. Her room is light, airy, and clean. Every time I call the staff are all up to date with Mum’s current state and achievements. My call is always answered promptly and booking appointments to visit in line with Covid restrictions is very efficient.
The facilities at Appleby House are exceptional. The Art Room provides my Mum with a chance to create pictures, something she has not done in years. I’m so looking forward to the safe easing of restrictions and being able to take my children to visit Mum. They’re busting to see her, the residential cat, and guinea pigs!

My aunt has only been in Appleby House for three weeks and there is already a positive change in her appearance and wellbeing. Professional and caring staff who pay personal attention to each resident. I was highly impressed by the number, variety and frequency of activities with the residents to keep them entertained and stimulated. Incredible staff, nothing appears to be too much trouble for them in ensuring the wellbeing
and happiness of the people whom they care. I also appreciate that family members and visitors are made to feel so welcome and at home (and not like intruders when visiting)

Really happy with the home. My mum is well cared for and feels safe. The staff make an effort to keep facilities and residents clean and well kempt. They are also very welcoming to visitors which means people feel comfortable visiting.

Appleby House is just like home, warm, caring with such wonderful staff. I always enjoy visiting and leave knowing that the care and support is top class. I often take my small dog along and it always seems to cheer the residents, it's wonderful that I'm allowed to take her along to visit. The art,
crafts and different social times are lovely to join in and see the residents enjoying these times too.

My mother-in-law spent a respite week in Appleby House. From quite a solitary, isolating individual, she was content and comfortable with her short stay, this is a testament to the wonderful ambience Appleby House has.
The communal rooms are bright and stimulating and the staff despite their job challenges,
are extremely compassionate and understanding to individual needs. A superbly well-run establishment that ticks all the correct boxes.

My mother stayed at Appleby House for a respite week, she wasn't sure at first because she has lived on her own for the past 32 years. But came out smiling and full of stories of her stay, enjoying the meals also the ice cream parlour being her favourite, The staff at Appleby House were so kind, caring
and compassionate to her and she shared some lovely conversations with them.

I was so pleased by the way the staff welcomed my wife and managed the problems she presented. They have a wonderful ability to calm her in her moods. The brightness of the staff and the decor enliven my wife and the varied activities are excellent and occupy her.
My initial contact with Appleby House
was encouraging and I at once felt the calmness.
My visits have always been pleasant and on my wife's birthday, a room was given to us for a private party where we had some 20 guests.

The majority of staff I observe during ten hours of visits had commendable rapport with guests, often anticipating their wants/needs with alacrity and good humour. Even the most mentally/physically challenged were enabled to participate in group activity if they wished. The standard of hygiene in public/private
areas was excellent. Fruit and liquid refreshments were to hand. Guests were treated with respect and dignity. Overall a comfortable, stimulating and happy environment.

Job Title: Home Manager Joined: 2014

I haven’t been at Appleby House long – I joined as home manager in early 2014 – but I’m completely committed to meeting the challenge of making this home the care home of choice for people in the Epsom area. I want us to have full occupancy and a waiting list!


As home manager I’m passionate about providing the best possible care to residents to enhance their lives. I love involving residents and my team in how things are run. I believe my role is to lead by example to create a good culture at Appleby House. That can come down to things like how I speak to people, being smiling and positive and being a good team player. It’s my job to motivate staff and promote their development through training and supervision. I thrive on working with my team to bring about change – stretching them and seeing positive change happen.


I have to say that the best part of the day for me is walking around the home talking to residents and staff. We always have a good laugh and it’s the time when I get the inspiration to make any changes that are needed. But what I don’t need to change at Appleby House is the terrific atmosphere: it’s really friendly and welcoming, and new people visiting us are always really struck by that. We also offer a huge range of quality care services – particularly around dementia care – and this sets us apart from our competitors too.


I’ve lots of plans for Appleby House over the coming months, including increasing the social activities for residents, improving the dining experience for them and sprucing up the home. There’s lots to do but I’ve a great team, so I’m confident we can make it happen.
